I'm from the same town as Jon Ryan the Seahawks punter and former Packer. Does anyone have any info on why he was let go from the Pack as he is a pretty good kicker? His friends here say it was 'politics' because Jon was a Canadian taking an Americans job.(their words not mine) Just info is good info.

The reason given was his inconsistency. Mike Stock, the special teams coach at the time didn't like him, and replaced him with Derrick Frost, who was consistent: consistently bad. Stock was gone not long after Ryan.

I think it had more to do with the fact that it sometimes took him too long to get the ball off and wasn´t very good at directional kicking.

I could see that since he has had a few blocked. He also likes to get into the down field tackling which could get him hurt. In a game earlier this year some lineman blindsided him right off the tv screen. Launched!!!!!!!

My memory is that the release of Jon Ryan was a shock to just about everybody, from fans to reporters to teammates. He wasn't great but we could all easily see that he was a pretty good punter. Inconsistent? Yeah, he was a young buck but he had been the best punter in Green Bay since the Craig Hentrich years. There was never a clear reason given that I remember, and I'm sure that politics or personality conflicts had something to do with it. You don't cut a promising specialist for no reason just before the season without a reason, stated or otherwise.

As JBlood said, the problem/conflict was either with Stock or it could have also been with McCarthy or Ted Thompson.

On his wikipedia page:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jon_Ryan
On September 30, 2007 against the Minnesota Vikings he became the first Packers punter to rush for a first down since David Beverly did so against the Houston Oilers on December 14, 1980.[5] His rush attempt that resulted in a gain of 7 yards came on a fake punt that was originally intended to be a pass, however, he did not hear the coaches call it off at the last minute.[6] He ran with the ball when he realized he had no one to throw to and ran into several of his blockers in the process because they did not know he was running with the ball.

On December 23, 2007 Ryan had two of his punts blocked by the Chicago Bears, including one that was returned for a touchdown. He also had a nine yard punt during the game and bobbled a snap on another that lead to a turnover on downs. Before this, the Packers went 929 punts without a blocked punt, dating back to September 11, 1995.

On December 30, 2007 during a 34-13 victory over the Detroit Lions, Ryan kicked a 72-yard punt in the fourth quarter, the longest punt at Lambeau Field since Don Chandler's 90 yard punt in 1965.[7][8] The punt tied for the second longest in franchise history - set by Sean Landeta September 20, 1998 at Cincinnati.[9]

During the 2007 season, Ryan posted a net average of 37.6 yards, 12th in the NFL and the finest in Green Bay since 1969. His gross mark of 44.4 was the fourth-best in club history.[10]

Ryan was released by the Packers on September 1, 2008, a move that was considered by many Packer fans to be a mistake and bewildering as Ryan boasted the best punting statistics the team had seen in years.[11]

This quote is from a jsonline article about Ryan’s release:
“Obviously that (directional punting) is a very important aspect of punting if you can do it,” Thompson said of directional punting. “It’s rare that you can find somebody that is very accomplished, but we do think that Derrick brings that ability a little bit. It’s sort of the whole package, and this is not a ‘Kill Jon Ryan’ thing. He is a good punter and has very impressive strength. I think we were just looking for a little bit more consistency.”

It doesn't make much sense about the conspiracy theory that Ryan was let go due to taking away an "American" job! Cuz unless the Bills have relocated to Toronto, then all 32 punting jobs are still in the US and our former kicker (a Canadian) is still employed by the NFL! ;)

Maybe Ryan heard some coach say, "g*dd*mn Johnny Canuck can't kick it where we tell him" at which point he heard the "Johnny Canuck" but missed the "where we tell him" part.

In the absence of some stunning evidence to the contrary, this story has the ring of an absurd fabrication.

That's what I'm trying to figure out. Sometimes guys can't take it when they are sent packing. (No pun intended) it would be good to see a guy from home win the SB but I hate them loudmouth SeaCocks.

You ever have the Leinie's Hoppin Helles? I think that's a good one.
Leinie's is always a good choice! I think that Leinie's needs to revisit their marketing strategy and bring back "Big Eddy" for the start of training camp and not just for Octoberfest!

The point is that he was a good punter with potential, and he was a lock for the season but was released out of nowhere, and then went on to have a good career with his next team. There is more to the story than just hurt feelings. I doubt that the truth will ever come out of Green Bay, and Ryan may not even know it himself...just handed his walking papers, collected his playbook, and escorted out of the building.

What peeved me about the whole thing was that, Ryan was released and they signed that:poop:clown without even trying him out, because Mike Stock liked what he had seen of him in some previous life.
The good thing was Mike Stock was sent packing shortly there after.

He was born there but grew up in Canada.

He moved to Canada when he was 12 years old, he went to college at Eastern Michigan. So he spent seven years in Canada, don´t think that makes him Canadian.

My Lord. You really do try way to hard to argue with people over the most non-issue topics.

Here is an interesting little piece titled "Canadians in the NFL". lol Yes, Mulumba is listed.
http://www.tsn.ca/nfl/feature/?id=1190

Soooo...please do share... what "makes somebody Canadian"? If he came to the country when he was 9 and went to college there? If he came to the country when he was 2 and went to Eastern MI? What is your rule on that? I suspect most of Canada is waiting with baited breath to hear.

I have no clue and I really don't care.... but you certainly must know...does he hold citizenship there? If he does, can we THEN call him Canadian? ...or...not even then?

That move to cut Ryan just days before the season opener in '08 is one of the most baffling in recent Packers history. They paid for that blunder for two years, as the article reports.

The article mentions some additional Green Bay connections to this year's Packer-less Super Bowl. Besides Seattle GM John Schneider one time tackle bust Breno Giacomini will be startng on the Seahawks o-line. One time safety Marquand Manuel is an assistant on Seattle's coaching staff. Ex-Pack assistant coaches Darrell Bevel, Kippy Brown, Pat Ruel, Mondray Gee are on Pete Carroll's staff. A couple of former Packers scouts Scot McCloughan and Laree Lopes are in the Seattle front office.

Over on the Denver side lb Paris Lenon is a back-up. Lenny McGill, who used to scout for Green Bay now works for the Broncos.
