Hey Mondio, the $16 mil, is that for two years? I think so. Yeah, that's a lot to pay a one-read backup QB and sometimes WR and wildcatter. And he's 31, right? Not a kid.
it was a 2 year deal worth more, 16 million was guaranteed I think. Not sure how the breakdown is, but any contract that guaranteed him 16 million dollars was 14 too much

Wow, thanks for the details Mondio, much appreciated. And I totally agree with your financial assessment.

I'm guessing the Saints aren't paying Winston that much, and if I was Winston, that would not sit well with me.

Next season, Hill costs 16.2M in space to keep, and 11.2M in space to cut.

Can you elaborate?
There was one game, near the end of the game, and they were on the 8 or 12. All of a sudden (after the snap) I realized Hill was at QB. He rolled right and was looking for a receiver. Then he saw an opening and took it to the house. He can be very decisive and he is strong. And I remember him helping a lot to win another game. But I am not a Saints fan and whereas I would probably remember the details if it was The Pack; I don't here. Just remember he made plays that I thought won the game for them. Not at all saying The Pack made a mistake with not keeping him nor saying he is worth the money. Just saying that so far he seems quite valuable to them.

Winston signed with the Saints for 1.1 million.... so apparently Hill is worth 14 1/2 times what Winston is .... lmao

well sort of I suppose we should cut that in half since Winston signed a 1 year deal and I think that Hill’s 16 million was for two years... but ... I still can’t justify that much money for Hill considering what they are using him for.

Ah yes. He ran in a TD late against the Chargers to force overtime.

He had 13 yards in that game. I struggle to attribute the win to him, though he did score.

Hill has also added what looks like 30lbs+ of ripped muscle since joining the Saints. Must have a good conditioning program :)

It's the same with Hill, he may be valuable on occasion, but they have TE's better. They have QB's that are better, they have RB's who are better. He's kind of unique in that he's not a specialist, but that's because he's not good enough to be one. Brees is better with the ball, so instead of 1 read and then pass or run, he can read to the WR1 WR2, RB, TE, etc or run. Instead of 2 options, Kamara gives you a buttload. He's a receiver, he's a runner, he's an outlet, he's a route runner downfield and everything in between.

he is a good special teams player, pretty valuable in that regard, but those guys don't get paid the big bucks to cover or try and block punts.

What's also interesting to me is that if you had a TE or WR or RB who accounted for 13 yards and a touchdown in any given game, no one would say that said player "won their team the game."

GET OVER IT!!!!!

We drafted Mandarich over Barry and Deion Sanders, we drafted Vonnie Holliday over Randy Moss. Mistakes happen. We are 13-3 FFS. Who's to say he'd even fit in a lot of other offenses other than Sean Payton's. He also under threw that receiver by a mile on that deep pass, it just so happened Rhodes damn near fell on his feet on that double move.
Good examples and every team can cite cases of the one that got away. The Bears could have had Mahomes instead of Trubisky, for example.

I'll admit to being miffed when GB let Hill get away. But as another poster said, I'd take Ervin over Hill any day and pocket the substantial change. It's just life. Sometimes we're right, sometimes we're wrong.

Actually the Saints signed Hill to a two-year, $21 million contract with $17.439 million guaranteed.

turnover machine.

True, Hill has touched the ball only 45 times this season but fumbled on four of them, losing two.

In a pretty surprising move the Saints announced that Taysom Hill will start against the Falcons on Sunday.

Jeeeesh, I figured this thread would be buzzing. Taysom gets his first NFL start and looks pretty good in doing it.

Where is everyone now? :coffee:

Just one game and against the Falcons. But he did some good things out there. Loved the energy he was bringing. I was feeling kind of dirty pulling for the Saints, but I only wanted Taysom to have a good first start. I'm fine if he sucks the rest of the season.

I couldn't help thinking on a couple of the Packers short yardage situations how nice it would be to have a guy like Taysom or Jacoby Brissett. I'm sure someone will show that statistically the Packers aren't that bad, but sure seems like they struggle picking up 3rd/4th and short.

Yes... it was only one game... and not against a great team...BUT.. he definitely looked like a competent NFL QB. He may never be better than average, but he certainly seemed to be an adequate backup which I believe is where the argument is centered.

Bingo. Who knows what his future holds as a starter, but until he falters at it, I think he probably remains the starter until
Brees is healthy. If nothing else, he probably has silenced some critics, I know that his coach had some fun after the game with one of them.

I didn’t see it but the box score looks very impressive.

Hill wasn't as impressive as the box score might indicate though. He got more comfortable during the course of the game.

It will be interesting to see how he fares for the rest of the games until Brees returns.

As a side note, the Saints defense looked scary good, vastly improved over the week 3 matchup with the Packers.

The game wasn't nearly as impressive. The Falcons sucked LOL. There was literally zero pressure on the the Saints offense the entire game and many stat padders were utter luck. He did have some nice passes for sure. Same stuff though, one read and run. When your one read is wide open it makes it easier. He looked better later, but it wasn't even a football game at that point. The Falcons were cooked and it showed on the field.

One game definitely doesn't vault him into "preferred starter" status" or the heir apparent to Brees. However, I think given that it was his first start and full game as an NFL QB, I would be pretty happy as a Saints fan with the results. If nothing else, he proved that he isn't just a gadget player than can take a few snaps a game at QB.

Hill made some good throws but although too many bad ones that somehow ended up resulting in positive plays for the Saints. I'm not sure that will work against better competition as well.

He proved to be more than solely a gadget player though.

He also had a long pass for a TD called back due to a penalty. I don't think he is a FHOF'er as a QB, but he eventually might go down as one of the better multi-purpose weapons that has played. When you look at what the Packers paid Jimmy Graham, as well as what other back-up QB's around the league make, I think Sean Payton is smiling today, knowing that the two-year, $21 million contract probably is now going to pay even more dividends beyond what they were getting by only using him as a gadget player. I also think Payton deserves a lot of credit for what he has done in N.O. and his eye for talent. The Saints have won 6 straight games when Brees hasn't been able to start.

I think they’re 28th or 29th in 3rd and short situations. Pretty **** poor.
