Lions at Packers Game Preview

While this game really means nothing to either team it is still pretty important to the Packers. After last week’s horrific loss to the Bears the Packers have something to play for this week. They Packers have to play well in order to get their momentum back. After such a terrible loss the Packers are probably not to comfortable with their play. This needs to be eliminated by the first playoff game. The Packers need to play well against the Lions in order to get their confidence back. If that doesn’t happen the Packers could easily lose in their first playoff game. Teams that stumble into the playoffs rarely do well so it would be best if the Packers ended the season on a good note. I don’t think the Packers need to win the game to regain the momentum. All they need to do is play well when the starters are in (there is a slim to none chance that the starters will play the whole game).

McCarthy plans to play starters for at least a half unless the Packers are blowing out the Lions and in that case it will probably be earlier. Besides regaining momentum the Packers need to come out of this game healthy. The Packers can’t afford to get an injury in a game that essentially means nothing. At this point the Packers are healthier than the Cowboys and the Packers need to keep that in tact. In order to prevent more injuries several players like Charles Woodson and Ryan Pickett are expected not to play in order to rest their nagging injuries. With having next week off our injured players will have time to rest and hopefully be over these nagging injuries and ready to play in the first playoff game.

Another thing to watch in the game is when the starters go out, how do the backups play. It will be good to see how deep the Packers depth chart truly is. Players like Alan Barbre (fourth round OL draft pick this year) will get their first meaningful playing time. The time they get to play in this game will show us how deep our team is if we should encounter an injury in the playoffs. We will also get to see some of our younger players, like Barbre play and see how bright of futures they have in the NFL.

While the game has no impact on the playoffs standings the game is still pretty important. The Packers starters need to come out strong and regain momentum after the terrible game last week. In doing so they need to remain healthy and once they have showed that they are ready for the playoffs they need to be taken out in order to get the backups some playing time.

BONUS: After reviewing the "Cheaters game", the Colts can beat them with a more solid offensive showing than younger Manning's team. The same truth applies for the Pack to get to the Super Bowl. Universal thing.

Packersnew com Scouting Report

http://www.packersnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071229/PKR01/71227170/1058/PKRFeatures

Scouting report: Look for Packers to rebound

Packers run offense vs. Lions run defense

Ryan Grant had a 66-yard touchdown in last week’s loss at Chicago. He should do well against Detroit, which ranks 19th in rush defense. Edge: Packers.

Lions run offense vs. Packers run defense

Kevin Jones had a surprisingly good day against the Packers on Thanksgiving, but he’s out the rest of the season with an ACL knee sprain. The bruising T.J. Duckett will replace him. Edge: Packers.

Packers pass offense vs. Lions pass defense

The Packers were atrocious last week, though the forecast doesn’t call for 40-mph winds this week. Look for Brett Favre to rebound and put together a good day against the Lions. Edge: Packers.

Lions pass offense vs. Packers pass defense

Detroit’s Roy Williams is on injured reserve, which puts an increased workload on receivers Calvin Johnson, Shaun McDonald and Mike Furrey. Edge: Packers.

Special teams

Green Bay’s special teams play last week was abysmal. Detroit’s Jason Hanson is still a solid kicker done late in his 30s while punter Nick Harris is an underrated punter. Edge: [Packers].

Coaching

Last week’s loss at Chicago should be a learning experience for Mike McCarthy, who has his team entrenched as the No. 2 seed in the playoffs. Edge: Packers.

Intangibles

f you listen to some Packers fans, playing at Lambeau Field in the cold and snow is detrimental to the Packers pass-happy offense. Don’t buy it. Edge: Packers.

Overall

Just how long Green Bay’s starters play is the biggest question mark. Either way [Uh! What??], expect the Packers to perform better this week after a poor showing against Chicago. Edge: Packers.

Note: Generally, a national audience will see the game.
