That is a great point..

Did Jenkins say I will sign for 23 million ( when he was getting 25 from Philly)

Even that contract wasn't what it seemed. It was a 1 year, $4 Million deal with the option for more.

The truth is we don't know what talks there were between Jenkins and ourselves, since no numbers were presented. It's possible he was seeking a lot more than we were willing to pay.

I agree our pass rush took a step back without him in the lineup, but I'm not going to single that out as the lone reason why our defense was poor. We also couldn't tackle to save our lives, which I think is a bigger factor in not being able to get off the field.

As for re-signing him, I don't think we should. Despite having one season where he stayed healthy, I still view him as an injury risk, and frankly, I'd rather find a young guy with upside potential.

Do we know exactly why he is being cut from the Eagles and if indeed he is actually being cut? The Eagles D really started to gel late in the season and that Jenkins was a big part of that. He was injured quite a bit during the season. If they do let him go and whoever picks him up had better do one hell of a physical on him. I'd still like to see him back in a Packers uniform. He's a beast and if he's healthy, I think he could make a huge difference next year. I'm not so sure what to make of Neal, but I know what we have with Jenkins and I like it.

It didn't just take a step back, to be honest, it went into free fall mode. We went from a top 5 D to pretty much the bottom of the league. I don't know if you can put that drastic of a drop in production on one player, but losing Jenkins impacted us significantly.

BINGO!
Kitten, that is my favorite post from you, ever.

People think there's gotta be just one smoking gun to explain everything. The reality is, in football at this level, it's like a 12-cylinder high performance sports car: one issue here or there will ultimately affect the whole thing.

You can have 1, 2, 4, 5 little things go wrong, and then the car will suck.

Losing Cullen Jenkins was problem #1, there's no denying that.
A pass rush can make a bad set of DBs look average. They can make an average set of DBs look good. And they can make good DBs look great.

A s****y pass rush will make a good set of DBs look bad.
And a s****y pass rush will make an average set of DBs look historically bad.
It's that simple really.

Add in the fact that the set of DBs has been anchored by Nick Collins for 6 years, and the fact that Collins IS great, which a lot of people didn't have a clue about. We saw the result time & time again.

I remember polling you guys towards the end of last season somewhere here, and it was just an offense vs defense thing.
More than 50% of us sided with the defense as far as who we had more confidence in.
That seems like decades ago.

But it was just Jenkins & Collins ago.
Bad bad luck on Collins. Bad gamble on Jenkins/Neal. Nobody wins em all.

I don't need you to pull up my post LTF but I remember a debate shortly after I arrived here where I said we should have signed Jenkins, Neal was a risk because of his past injuries and unproven, and not signing Jenkins was a big, big mistake.

It doesn't make me feel any better now though.

Maybe some of the same ones who were in favor of him being let go are bringing this up?;) From what I understand when the Eagles signed him it was essentially a one year deal. Remember it was thought at the time that the Eagles would have salary cap problems down the road with all their free agent signings. I don't think the Eagles are able or interested in coughing up the dollars for the remaining years of Jenkins contract. That doesn't mean they wouldn't keep him around for less.

No Jenkins wasn't injured quite a bit. I think he missed one game.

I think he may of missed more than one game, I think it was several. He seemed to be OK for the 2nd half of the season, the injuries occurred during the first and as I recall it was more than one injury. It was big news in Philly because they had just signed Jenkins from the SB winning Packers D and once things started to go wrong with the Eagles they were picking at every aspect of the D, including Jenkins. They also got on him about production. Philly is a brutal city to play in.

Nope he missed only the Dec 1 game. These are his per game stats. Rumors of an injury plagued season are greatly exaggerated.

Thanks! The way they were ripping on him in Philly one would think he was missing a freakin leg. Good to know his "injuries" were not as bad as they made them out to be. That will help him if they decide to trade.

Here's the thing. Just from listening to the press conferences and reading the releases, I get the impression that the Packers' staff and management feel they have the players they need to make a deep run. They just think they need to instill better fundamentals and technique in the young players. It doesn't really appear to me that they see a pressing need for free agents. It's just my opinion. I could be wrong. But somehow I get the impression they think they have everyone they need to win the Lombardi trophy.

I sure do hope you're wrong Croak...but I don't know.

To me...trying to make this current Defense into anything other than what they showed themselves to be ...is simplistic.

It isn't a matter or technique ....it's a matter of talent.

You could coach A J Hawk now til the cows come home ......and you're NOT going to have a Ray Nitschke.

We need better,.... not more bodies (keeping in mind TT's penchant for bringing in tons of people). Imagine what a Harrison, a Ware, a Willis, a MacDonald, a Suggs would do for GB.
