Space holder IMO for them trying to get Cignetti or a different coach and it just isn't time yet for it to happen....

I do think it's kind of funny that for this hiring cycle you had many who were pretty dead-set that Harbaugh was the belle of the ball. And I mean, he did get himself a 100m contract, so he's getting paid like it too.

Meanwhile McCarthy is more or less treated like a joke of a coach...

Regular Season Wins:
McCarthy - 174
Harbaugh - 180

Regular Season Win Percentage:
McCarthy 0.608
Harbaugh - 0.614

Postseason Wins:
McCarthy -11
Harbaugh - 13

Postseason Win Percentage:
McCarthy - 0.500
Harbaugh - 0.542

Super Bowl Wins:
McCarthy - 1
Harbaugh - 1

Conference Championship Appearances:
McCarthy - 3
Harbaugh - 3

And I am sure some will be quick to say, "Well, McCarthy had Aaron Rodgers!" To that one might add:

Seasons with MVP on his team:
McCarthy - 2 (Rodgers 2011, 2014)
Harbaugh - 2 (Jackson 2019, 2023)

Seasons with First Team All-Pro QB:
McCarthy - 2 (Rodgers 2011, 2014)
Harbaugh - 3 (Jackson 2019, 2023, 2024)

You're right, he is seen as a joke a lot. As your stats point out, that reputation doesn't appear to be fully earned. He's probably a better coach than he's given credit for. We demand wins, but NFL head coach can't be an easy job.

I give Harbaugh the nod because most of his tenure in the AFC was against Brady-Belichick and Mahommes-Reid along with Payton Manning. MM had a few tough contenders in the NFC but nothing like what Harbaugh had to battle to get through his conference.

If you're hiring someone as a placeholder for Cignetti, it better be a VERY short-term placeholder, as Cignetti ain't no spring chicken.

I would not have guessed that. Only thing I would say is that I thought MM was a better coach early in his career and became less effective later in his career. I dont expect him to get the Steelers very far. I expect the Giants will improve significantly as a team and as a organization.

What I will say is that MM handled the Favre-Rodgers conflict very well. And he handled the Fail Mary professionally unlike his opponent that would have cried to a priest. He managed to get a Packer team in 2006 back to .500. And going 14-4 in 2007 with little to no running game at the beginning of the season was not expected. Coaching for TT was not easy. TT rarely made acquisitions that counted except for Woodson and Peppers. And MM did not complain about it. And MM did a heckuva job keeping the Packers in it in 2013 when Rodgers missed 8 games and was left with Scott Tolzien until TT realized he could get Matt Flynn back.

I have the greatest amount of respect for MM as a person. For the reasons you mentioned and more. He contacted the fail Mary ref and said he was sorry he was getting so much grief over it. The man handled everything with a great deal of class.

In simplistic terms, I think AR exerted more control over the team than MM towards the end, requiring MM's departure. MLF came in & didn't ruffle any feathers his first couple of years, then it became a power struggle. Even though AR was playing lights-out in '20 & '21 Gute needed to change the dynamics. His big mistake, IMHO, was NOT trading AR for a boat-load of picks before the '22 draft (to Denver), possibly getting Surtain as part of the deal. Would've meant success for HC Hackett in Denver, and possible down-year in GB but the talent influx could've been historical.

The only problem would be that Gute would have taken more heat from fans and media alike than we could imagine. Worse than certain politicians get. It would have cast a dark cloud over the season. At that point in time any departure by Rodgers needed to be on his terms. Now AFTER 2022, it becomes a whole different story.

Have you read these forums? People that wanted MM fired but not MLF. MM has at least won multiple playoff games in a row
I understand the definition. I just don't think there are a lot of folks here that wanted Mike fired but want to keep Matt. Just looking for some names. Anybody want to confess?

Well I did think it was time for MM to go. Our offense was doing next to nothing for several years and I blamed it on his not changing up routes. I was on the fence with Matt because his playcalling drives me nuts sometines. But I'm good with keeping him.

I liked Mike, but it did appear that his time here had run its course. His offense was once so high powered, but it seems like the league had caught on to what he was doing. Maybe it's as you say about him not changing up his routes. I feel similarly about MLF, I feel like we've already hit our ceiling with him.

Hope you're wrong and he has an ability to innovate off of what he has. He better because there are a number of his coaches going elsewhere. And like you said, defenses catch on to what you are doing.
