I'm not sure that LaFleur is the main culprit here, but I'll leave it at that.

What is interesting is that IF Policy lets Matt LaFleur go, the Packers would surely be the most coveted HC job in the NFL. It's a turnkey Super Bowl team. I'm not sure if there is another Ben Johnson out there, but who knows!

This team has talent, albeit it was slowly drained away from us by injuries this year but beyond that I always felt something was holding us back from reaching our full potential.
I admit I had a big dislike of MLF calling plays which prohibited him from doing a proper job managing the overall game. I felt that hindered us, sometimes at crucial moments
The packers were lucky to make the playoffs the last 4 yrs as the 7th seed each time. I would call that a fringe semi good team, that has a decent season but never gets very far beyond that and after 4 yrs we are still in the same place, no improvement in sight, no uptrend appearing that may indicate a bright future is coming.
Injuries have been brutal no doubt, but also think some of us are perhaps trying to stretch that excuse/explanation a little bit too far.

It wasn't due to injuries and/or not having superior talent/players that we lost to the Browns and Panthers or tie the Cowboys early on. We 100% had the players/depth/talent/whatever you want to call it to win those games and just failed to do so. And IMO it wasn't injuries that lost us the game vs Philly. Even with all our injuries, we held Chicago completely in check for 58 minutes and change just a few weeks ago and it wasn't injuries that caused Doubs to fail to field the onside or for us to trip over our own feet for the rest of regulation and OT. I wouldn't say we lost vs the Broncos due to our injuries either. Yes that certainly made it an uphill climb but we had more than our fair shot at winning it (and/or putting them away early before injuries started piling up. Who knows how the game and perhaps season would be right now if we'd just finished them early on).

In fact out of 6 losses and 1 tie really Baltimore and MAYBE Philly are the only games that I can look at and say "we simply did not have the personnel to be able to win this game". Injuries or not, we had the quality (AND opportunity) to beat Cleveland, Carolina, Dallas, Chicago, and Denver.

So it's tough for me to say. Did injuries to guys like Parsons and Kraft likely put a big dent in our chances of winning the Super Bowl or being a serious postseason threat? Probably. Those are huge losses. But they (or their absence) were not responsible for the majority of our non-wins. And then it's that kind of butterfly effect type thing. Yes those losses are huge, but what if we'd won those winnable games vs Cleveland, Dallas, Carolina, Chicago, Denver? We're looking at 14 wins and a comfy #1 seed with a bye. We probably feel radically different about our postseason perspective if we're sitting on 12, 13, 14 wins, a #1 seed and a bye and are on a good run heading into the postseason than sneaking in at 7, banged up and looking at a potential 4 game slide into the playoffs. Of course this is all speculative but all that to say that...I don't think injuries TOTALLY explain this season.

And with specific regards to Parsons...even before he was added, I think virtually everyone expected this unit to take a step forward this season in Hafley's second year. That they have not really done so with Parsons and regressed DRAMATICALLY without suggests that either A.) Our preseason expectations were way out of line, B.) we coached/planned Parsons into a far too integral role to the point that we simply cannot cope/adjust without him or C.) our returning players were much worse than we had evaluated them to be

U are correct MLF might be a better HC if he gives up play calling to someone else and concentrate on doing proper job managing , he should have done this a long time ago

Great point of consideration too.

Many folks have talked about how LaFleur will have his pick of job offers if we let him go. I think that's probably true!

At the same time, maybe I'm biased... but who wouldn't want the opportunity to be our head coach right now? This is a team that most everyone would agree - when healthy - SHOULD be a serious super bowl contender.
Let's say you make a call to Todd Monken in Baltimore. Maybe you try and take another dip from Detroit and look at John Morton, they still basically score at will. Or Klint Kubiak in Seattle - he had Darnold looking like a MVP candidate and has got JSN gunning for Calvin Johnson's rec yards record. Maybe try for another Kubiak brother and Shanahan-product in Klay - he's having a good run in San Francisco.

Here's a wild card: How about Matt LaFleur's own little brother, Mike? He's from the "Shanahan-tree," was the passing and WR coach when they went to the SB in 2019, and has been very successful with the Rams since 2023.

Now I'm not necessarily advocating for any one of these guys. Truth be told I haven't taken a terribly close look at anyone yet. But point is...how many of those guys would turn down the opportunity to be HC of the Green Bay Packers? Yes, Matt will have no shortage of suitors if we decide to move on, but I don't think we are going to be scraping the bottom of the barrel ourselves...

I don't know many teams or coaches personally that likely handle the following and continue to be a world beater:

- Not just their best TE, but arguably top offensive weapon and one of the best TEs in the league goes down for year.
- The #1 or #2 edge defender in the entire sport goes down for good
- Their #1 iDL out of the year
- Their starting center and longest tenured OL out of the year
- Their all pro RT hasn't been healthy since the same night Parsons went down
- Their best WR out until week 8
- Their #1RB playing on one good knee it seems for 75% of the season now

Injuries IMO are one of the few things when they pile up that simply cannot be overcome by coaching if all crucial spots.

I just wonder if GB doesn't mess up a kick against Cleveland and Doubs recover the onside kick if all the doomsayers would still exist or not...
Heck if we had just Won that Bears game and we should have. We’d be 5-0 in Division and still playing for a #3 Seed this Week and a 6-0 Division Sweep
Last year the complaint centered around 1-5 (even though we pulled starters in Week 18). That group said man if we could only beat Vikings and Detroit and go 4-2 or 5-1 we’d be Championlike. Today we are 4-1 NFC North and have beat every team in the North. Now that group has backed up and moved the target to “if only we had Malik Willis as our Starter!
Cmon. It doesn’t wear well and imo it only makes me not trust those posters (not you) judgement. They are afraid to admit they were wrong about last year claiming we couldn’t beat a playoff caliber team.. so to hide from their glaring mistake they use MLF or Malik as a Ruse to avoid being found out.

You think MLF deserves another 2-4 years?! Look, I'm not one to make knee-jerk reactions with coaches, but this year he has repeatedly shown no ability to make critical decisions and no ability to learn by his mistakes. His absolutely STUPID decision to run yet another failed inside zone run from the shotgun when we literally needed and inch or two, just put it over the top for me. He has repeatedly run that play at least half a dozen times in similar situations with absolute zero success. On top of that, he should have punted the ball anyway. His stubborn doggedness to run that play come hell or high water is borderline pathological. Even my 12 year old niece knew what MLF was going to do on that play before they even broke the huddle. It was probably the single most bone-headed play call of his career and everyone saw it coming. My patience is long-suffering but not infinite and he has finally exhausted mine. Oh, and I'm also tired of having a coach who looks like he's about to cry all the time.
MLF time should be up , he has not shown leadership and sure any body can win on any given Sunday but to lose to alot lesser teams, this year it shows he does not prepare his team for victory every Sunday and his play calling at times maybe good but he fails when he needs to make the good ones

MLF has more often than not made the calls to win games though in his career. Fact is though, majority of the time isn't good enough for most - nearly all or perfection is where we are as a fan base.

True.

I will say there’s some areas we can improve but that’s really any game I watch. We all know it’s really tough to win in this league.

With that said. We’d all agree that the best ability is availability. That statement about players imo applies to the entire team as a whole. If you’re not playing in postseason you’re not giving yourself a chance to improve. One thing Matt doesn’t have to apologize for is being consistently good and getting us a ticket to the postseason. It’s just assumed. We can lose 4 in a row and still qualify!

Say what they may but 18 teams fans have 0% chance of watching their teams compete in playoffs. We’re in the playoffs every year and next to being a consistent SB Winner? That’s pretty fun.

You know what better than Malik’s single season completion % of 85%???

Matt LaFleur Postseason qualified 86% CAREER. We’re darn lucky and the bulk of these naysayers didn’t get to begin being a fan in the early 1970’s LET ME TELL YA HOW THAT FELT!!

So they (I’ll call them by proper terminology but I’d be banned!)
can all cry me a river!

What is also a point of concern to me is that we have started to establish what feels like a bit of a trend late in the season...

In 2022 we had an up and down season for Rodgers last. But we found ourselves in a must-win matchup against Detroit...who themselves were already out and could only play spoiler...and we lost, thus getting eliminated from the playoffs.
2023 was a solid year. Most would say we were "ahead of schedule" in that season. We got into the playoffs and ran Dallas out of Jerryworld before ultimately losing a close one to SF (which was largely due to our reluctance to move on from our failure of a ST coordinator, but that's another topic...)
In 2024 we're sitting comfortable at 11-4... before dropping two straight to slide into the WC as the 7 seed and promptly getting clobbered by the Eagles (with another failing on ST, but again...another topic :p)
This year, just 2-3 weeks ago we are in the #2 seed and conceivably even have a shot at the #1 seed still...before dropping three in a row, finishing with a meaningless game against Minnesota (which will likely just be treated as a preseason rest/heal up type thing) and again limping into playoffs at #7 seed.

As above some of that can be accounted for due to injury, but it's concerning that we are seemingly getting in the habit of fading as the season goes on... Is that a matter of coaching? A lack of focus, discipline, etc? Do we not have the depth? Is our training and medical staff unable to have our squad able to withstand the rigors of a full season?

I'll be honest, IF we didn't have so many crucial position and TOP end of our roster injuries and we were sitting where we are I'd likely be a lot more agreeable to the time to walk MLF thoughts.

I just don't see it, not even a little bit personally. Yes, sometimes he tries to outthink his thinking in playcalls, but the dude is crazy respected play caller and designer...and like I said more often than not gets it right...it's just so easy to remember when he doesn't, bad events or times stick like quick dry epoxy.

Oh, and with regards to "somebody in mind," well, I dunno. I can't tell you how many times I've heard something like "If you fire LaFleur, who do you plan on getting who will be as good or better?"

Well, let me respond to a question with a question: If I went back in time 7-8 years and said "If you fire Mike McCarthy, who are you going to get who is better?", how many of you would have answered "The OC from the 27th-ranked Tennessee Titans scoring offense will be better"?
I do not think we had a clue.

Here I think you're confusing the 24-21 SF loss with the 13-10 SF loss from 2021? Way too many playoff losses to SF

True.

I agree and I’ll defend Matt but to be sure Matt 100% has areas to improve. Yet each year presents obstacles for each Coach. Overall he’s put his players in positions to succeed. My thought is we have far more mishaps on individual player execution than we do our play caller. Every aspect can improve. Yet for me the one area I think would help us the most as far as immediate help?

Individual Penalties + Turnovers

If we just stay even on net takeaways our success rate skyrocket. You do that by punching and ripping that ball + taking on the mindset of a Receiver on Defense. Expect the ball is going to be tipped to you 1-2 times in 65 plays. Be mentally prepared to play the ball on Defense. We have as many dropped catchable INT as ones we’ve caught.

We cannot have discipline flags. Don’t fight you must do your fighting on the next play between the whistles. No facemask or holding or hands to face or tripping or stupid stuff. That very rarely affects the play in positive fashion, but almost always reverses a big play or costs points or major swings in field position. Especially on Special Teams returns. Can’t have it and I’d rather operate with 10 guys than have 1 holding. It’s literally that damaging.

We now temporarily pull anyone holding on return units and have them see Matt afterwards to talk about their future with the team.

Discipline vs dumb penalties
Rich needs role diminished or canned

Those two things if I'm Gute are carved into the drywall of MLF's office as to do items....

1000% this. I roll my eyes every time anyone implies that if you don’t have a better option, you can’t suggest that MLF be replaced.

Is that how it works for the organization, they need to have that answer on the spot?

No, they’re going to through numerous interviews and due diligence to find the best fit, as they should.

No, I don't think MLF deserves another 2-4 years, but I think that's what he gets. I read an article somewhere yesterday morning that MLF has an aggressive agent and he will be pursuing a long-term contract for MLF with the Packers. I don't know the article's source, but it suggested that MLF and his agent would not accept a short-term agreement from the Packers and his contract is up at the end of this year. Both MLF's and Gute's are up at the end of the year.

I guess I have my doubts that that Policy would move on from MLF at the end of this season with there having been so many injuries to the team and with Gute's less than ideal track record on drafting and FA. That's why I'm guessing that the one change Policy can make that doesn't upend the team is to move on from Gute.

I've read other articles to suggest that Policy doesn't want to be actively involved in football decisions and that he's more open to a traditional hierarchy where the HC reports to the GM. So I find it more plausible that Policy resigns MLF, moves on from Gute, and lets the new GM (Policy's GM) decide MLF's fate in the next few years.

I've also read that Elliot Wolf is potentially available now that the Patriots are letting Vrabel take over some GM duties. So who knows?

That's the life of a coach, I guess. Critics complain when things don't go right, and when it doesn't, it's all his fault. Then on the otherside of it, no recognition given when it does, and basically the mindset of "well they should win anyway". Then try to point out all the plays they didn't agree with, or were unsuccessful at. Coaching is a tough job, and it takes a thick skinned person to be able to handle the criticism that comes with it.

Except for the fact( and this is no speculation, this is not just my opinion) its a cold hard fact that any time we've made the playoffs its as the 7th seed. There's no getting around that. So where's any sign of improvement, where's just even a small inkling that we are heading in the right direction, that next year we will be better than the previous year. The numbers are staring us in the face...

By almost every metric most use to measure coaches MLF is one of the best. Now if your one of the best is only a 3 deep group or 5 sure arguments there to be made he is out of it but otherwise almost EVERY knowledgeable person in football knows MLF is one of the best.

Now you did bring up one of the BIGGEST critiques that has immense merit and that is his loyalty to his staff to a fault. It is TREMENDOUSLY powerful to know your boss or those over you believe in you, MLF absolutely conveys that to his staff - BUT he has went too far with this affecting accountability within the staff. Rich needed one of his two titles stripped in the offseason - to send a message to him but the rest of the staff that medocrity isn't going to cut it. Rich continually puts forth STs that struggle to be above the bottom 1/3 in the league in many stats which would be argued as most crucial to judging them - he is also by title the assistant head coach. I think if the players respect him like it seems they do, remove him as ST Coordinator and keep on staff in a diminished role as direct assistant to MLF as Assistant Head Coach AT MOST what Rich should do for us.

MLF is one of the best in the league though absolutely.
Well, I will be 82 tomorrow having grown up in the prior years of Lombardi. It took a long time to get another winner (Holmgren) to change the atmosphere in Green Bay. I have seen a lot of football and was a youth sports coach for over 25 years. We can all be critical as to how the game should be played, from the top, to the coaches and the basics. I saw a post the other day and this person must have been reading my mind from the past; basics. As a youth coach, it is where most of these professional players got their first exposure to football. Learning the basics. Trust me, none whom I coached made it to the NFL. I was critical of the McCarthy era, poor blocking, tackling and bonehead penalties and play calling. With the change of the Packers defensive coordinator last year most of us certainly agreed there needed to be a change there. I can't get all the Packer games because of where I live. Of those I have seen, I am seeing once again that McCarthy area football especially on the defense; the failure in basics. Three of those basics, when tackling hit low and wrap your arms around the runners' legs; as a defensive safety or corner, don't let your man get behind you. Pursue the runner. It has been a common practice of the defensive backs not tackling, but trying to bring a runner down with a block which in the majority of times fail. The penalties. I won't even go there. I believe that the Packers have been a second half team through the years. The Baltimore game. If Jackson is not playing, what could possibly be their biggest weapon? I have talked with friends and family as to why the Ravens haven't run Henry much of the year. Having said that, who would want to tackle this beast as he ran in this game? Well for example, you are a defensive back, you know the basics of bringing a runner down, you got a lot of money to play to do that, so, why do you shy away from tackling Henry? That is exactly what it looked like and what did the defensive coordinator do about it? Nothing. There were only two players actually playing and that was Willis and Watson. It appears that the will to win is off and on. I was totally impressed by the play of Willis. He's raised a lot of heads with his play against the Bears and then to come back and have the game that he did against the Raven, that is leadership and a will to win attitude for sure which is lacking with a lot of players and in particular on the defensive side. I believe this game was already lost in the first half. The run couldn't be established early and then to go for it in the Packs own territory on 4th down and I would ask why, so early in the game. Made no sense whatsoever. Ok! both teams exchanged TD's so what? I believe that took the sails right out of the team and then to come back later with a miss snap by the center. The head is not in the game. So there is blame to go around. I saw a game two weeks ago and I think it was the Texans defense that their players actually apply basics in tackling, i.e. wrapping the legs. In closing I will just say, yah! I don't like some of the play calling by Matt, but he certainly had Willis prepared and what a great job in that respect as well as the Ravens game. Good coaches are really hard to come by, yah! he hasn't gotten to the big one yet and I think most understand how hard it is to get there. Oh Yah! How can we not love Andy Reid for his success. Thinking back to those prior Lombardi years and then a 36 year stretch until Holmgren, I would stay with Matt. I honestly believe that if Love wouldn't have gotten hurt, the Pack would have blown out the Bears in Chicago. How many Super Bowls have come the away of the Pack since Lombardi? So, is Matt worse then they? Really? According to Vince it was all about winning and in those days it was a simple game plan. He would not tolerate the play of this defense much less a lot of the offense as well. For me I see no leadership on the field like Nitchkie, Butler or Mathews. You had to be there in the Lombardi days. As good as his teams were, fans looked at those teams as an automatic win each and every game they played, they were that well disciplined. In closing, I will call them stupid rules has changed this game so dramatically it really isn't much fun watching anymore. Can't determine a catch, forward progress, possession or spotting the ball and taking one of thee most exciting parts of the game out of play i.e. the kickoff return. It's a joke. Pretty soon they will be playing touch. Oh! and how about the first round pick? How did he work out? Was he worth it? Time will tell or will it?
Right now we can only hope to get INTO the postseason with what we have left.

Great post. I always roll my eyes when people imply that you can’t suggest a new HC if you don’t have a perfect replacement candidate ready to roll right off your tongue.

As if the real life replacement process doesn’t involve a long process of a professional organization doing vast amounts of research and conducting multiple rounds of interviews with numerous candidates.

Here I think you're confusing the 24-21 SF loss with the 13-10 SF loss from 2021? Way too many playoff losses to SF
I wasn’t sure if he was mixing up those two losses or referring to Carlson’s missed field goal in 2023 which may have cost us the game.

Special teams played a role, to varying degrees, in our playoff exits in 2021, 2023, and 2024.

A lot of info there and a thorough summary of our season. Im just not quite sure what your point is? You seem to stop short of that.

I roll my eyes every time anyone implies that if you don’t have a better option, you can’t suggest that MLF be replaced.
Yes. Like my eyes. They flicker every time we lose a game and with the predictability of setting my watch, it’s immediately a “Fire Capers” crowd comes runnin’ like a witch hunt.

And yes. If you’re going to fire a HC, DC, ST, OC you’d darn better have a plan. Are you saying you don’t even have any options to replace them??!

This is getting weirder by the post
