If a player and position coach are undermining the head coach, I’d hope he was fired.

Perhaps if he did, and still was undermining the coach, McCarthy might still have a job.

AVP needs to get an interview as OC though.

(Ray Rhodes -- didn't really count)
Sherman
McCarthy

Martz?
Wouldn't it be something if his name really was Mike Something?
"Packers announce the new head coach. Mike Something."
How crazy that would be on how right you were in the topic title!

Me.
I may not know anything or much about football but I have some great ideas for trick plays starting with a hidden ball trick I pulled on some 3 and 4 year old kids yesterday.

IMHO it should be an up and coming one.
Not a fired one from a losing team.
Like a current head coach of a winning team or OC or DC.
Names?
Ya got me there.

Lol at that "Aaron Rodgers, Packers Head Coach" picture. I know it's old, and was a mistake by Fox TV, but can you imagine bringing back the days of the player/coach?
That would be quite the trick.

At this point in Aarons career, I doubt he would have much succes as such ... A player-coach needs to be a true Leader on the field at all times ... and watching the games, Aarons behaviour isn’t as such.

GB at this point need a “tough” coach who has the full backing of the GM and who is able to reign in a stubborn QB (with “diva-tendencies”) and keep him (Aaron) “honest” ...

Nice article on the topic here:

https://packerswire.usatoday.com/20...ackers-may-consider-to-replace-mike-mccarthy/

I wonder what happens in the unlikely event that Joe Philbin goes 4-0.

Will the next HC bring in all new assistant coaches? Mike Pettine out?

How big of a role will Aaron Rodgers play in the selection process?

How big of a role will Brian Gutekunst play in the selection process?

It's going to be another interesting off-season in Green Bay.

Eric Bieniemy should be the leading candidate to be the next Green Bay Packers Head Coach.

He was a big-time player in college. Spent the entire decade of the '90s in the NFL when many guys don't make it past their rookie contract.

He's been a coach since nearly right when his playing career ended. That's almost two decades of experience at high level college and pro spots. Plus, he's not a retread. Never been a head coach in the NFL.

He's the OC for in my mind the best offense in pro ball. Sure, what McVay has done in LA is impressive, but I think people don't understand the amount of talent the Rams have on their O-Line. They are spending some serious coin to give Goff some bodyguards. That and Todd Gurley is the foundation of that offense. The Chiefs' O-Line is decent enough, but schematically what they do by using space. pace, and match-up identification/isolation IMHO is 2nd to none, including McVay and the Rams. In KC, it's about the QB play and the playmakers complimenting the scheme/the scheme complimenting the playmakers. That translates to what we want/need here in Green Bay.

I'm sure many a Packer fan has watched Mahomes this year vs NE and vs the Rams and thought "Patrick is just Baby Aaron-so why can't MM get Aaron the same easy throws that Andy Reid/Eric Bieniemy get Mahomes?"

There are other reasons why EB is the guy.

Let's not be bashful-as an AA that has played at the highest levels of football, he can relate to a 53-man pro roster in every aspect. There have been reports coming out recently of how EB coached up Adrian Peterson like he was JAG status, emphasizing pass pro to him during those last few seasons in Minny when you know AP HAS NEVER really been obligated to focus on things like that as an ace formation specialist cowbell star back.

So you get a good cop and a bad cop all-in-one to earn the respect/rapport of ALL the players, not just Aaron Rodgers.

That's important.

Another thing that makes EB the guy to me is that we could still go get someone like Kliff Kingsbury/Lincoln Riley from the college ranks to be the OC/QB Coach. Now we have an "Alex Van Pelt" type guy to be AR12's buddy in the QB room and off-the-field that will make sure there is no wide communication gap between Rodgers and Bieniemy. Bieniemy still calls plays but there is a collaborative effort in structuring the offensive game plan between the 3. Aaron feels more empowered but not in a negative way. When Bieniemy needs to reign Aaron in he can-he was a RB, he'll just say "Rodgers-I need to get the playmakers going, get the ball outta your hands quicker haus/just run the screen play like we drew it up" and there won't be all this dissension bs like there has been. And like I said, EB will work with a young OC well. I know it. And why would he feel threatened? Being in GB is a dream for a HC-job security is paramount and you have it there. A guy like Kingsbury or Riley would stay in GB for about 3 seasons and then get his pick of job wherever he wants-and we can just go get the next hot young name rinse and repeat, all while EB is flourishing with AR12 and the boys.

There have also been numerous reports of how the GB Packers' locker room culture is "stuffy". I think hiring someone like EB is great because he can come in and work with Gute/Mark Murphy to put the players first. Let some fresh air come in and let the staleness/stuffiness out. GB will never be mistaken for Dallas in the '90s, but let's try to work on this image we have of not being desirable to FAs. It's not that hard. GB can still be what it always has been and move into the new era. EB would be a PERFECT SHEPHERD for this.

Additionally, hiring EB means you probably have the option of retaining the defensive coaching staff-which to me makes the most sense. THERE IS WAY TOO MUCH YOUTH ON THE DEFENSIVE SIDE OF THE ROSTER/TOO MUCH YOUTH THAT IS ABOUT TO BE BROUGHT IN FOR US TO START OVER AGAIN after changing DCs last season. Mike Pettine has shown me enough improvement with the D to warrant him being retained.

We need as smooth of a transition as possible-we always are a young team, but we have Aaron Rodgers. We don't have any more seasons to waste. We are in reloading stage, not rebuilding.

Eric Bieniemy is our man. And tbh, I think that's why they fired MM yesterday-they know who they want and they aren't gonna lose out on him due to timing concerns. They're gonna get the jump on it. EB is it.

Well if it's the first move, isn't it a good idea to put it in the middle?
If someone else has already put an X down, it's a good idea to block it.
Now if there are two other Os in a row or a diagonal, then't it's a good idea to put down the other O to win the game.

I don't think they can even talk to Bieniemy until the Chief's season is over.
So I guess I don't understand how they could get a jump on landing him at this point in time.

I’m sure he meant after the season...anyways, my choice is Josh McDaniels. He comes from a place where they’ve won big games....and most importantly Super Bowls. The talent as far as offensively?? is probably a little better in Green Bay ...and working with Rodgers is a chance I don’t see him passing up if he’s offered the job. Tom Brady is as much as a diva as there is so I see no issue with Rodgers and McDaniels being able to work together and get us some more Super Bowls. Tired of watching everyone else get better while we either stay mediocre or get worse!

Heck see the intensity and success the Cowboys are playing. The Packers could learn something here.

This is digging up old news a little, but I think it may be relevant:

Remember Aaron Rodgers was upset that they fired his quarterback coach (Alex Van Pelt) without consulting him? And now this season Rodgers play has not been up to his usual standard, and beyond that he also seems to have developed some bad habits. Maybe he and Van Pelt had a closer working relationship than we realized.

We've also seen that Rodgers is slow to trust new receivers. Maybe he's slow to trust a new quarterback coach also?

Why was Van Pelt fired, anyway? And who specifically fired him? Anybody know?
Van Pelt was fired because Brett Hundley was vastly under prepared to lead the team when Rodgers went down. I am unsure of who exactly fired him, but in typical cases, the head coach fires his staff.

I hate to bring this up, but please name a great player in the NFL who doesn't fit the strange fan definition of diva; which apparently means a player being unhappy that his coach isn't anywhere as close to as good at coaching as the player is at playing. It's basically like saying every employee with a boss who takes all the credit is a diva for complaining.

You really think any great QB looks at the coach as a "superior"? I don't think so. I'm sorry but I find it laughable that people seem to think that age is what determines respect in professional sports. Riley might not be the right guy but the fact that he's been as successful as he's been at such a young age implies that he's pretty smart; I have a feeling that Rodgers would respect intelligence rather than just being older.

I have an issue with the “Aaron Rodgers involvement” in the hiring phase of a new head coach. Say (gosh forbid) Aaron Rodgers gets hurt in a career ending manner (redskins). Then the Packers have a head coach who was brought aboard for one player in particular? That’s crazy. The Packers need a full team head coach.

Next season when I look at that Packer sideline I want to see two separate coaches, an OC and a HC. The Packers need to find 2 guys, not one or "1 1/2" guys IMO. I realize that there usually has been some guy under MM that was labeled with some kind of job title that called him an offensive assistant, but it seemed like running the offense during the game was pretty much all on Mike McCarthy and I think it was too much for him and the guys he was hiring to assist him on offense, just weren't all that great. How many of "those guys" ever seemed to do much or went on to other teams to do anything? Philbin and McAdoo are the only 2 I can think of and neither of them did much after they left Green Bay.

I know a lot of posters are tossing around names of guys who are very offensive minded and think they should be the Packers next HC, but I will trade a little of that "great offensive mind" for a HC that is solid in all aspects of what a Head Coach does, as long as the Packers hire a really good OC to fully run the Packers offense. After all this speculation about Rodgers and MM, I think its even more vital now than it ever was, to find an OC that can just focus on #12 and the offense.

You have to play the hand that you are dealt and right now, the Packers are holding a weak Ace named Aaron Rodgers. I don't think he should have say in the next HC, but for the reasons I pointed out above, I do think you find an OC that Aaron will mesh with and if that means asking his opinion of "this guy or that guy", so be it. Hell, if the Packers feel that Andy Van Pelt could be a solid OC, there is your OC hire right there. I will be honest, I don't know if Van Pelt is ready.
