    More from McCarthy

The Packers will spend an extra period practicing ball security this week after putting the ball on the ground five times against Minnesota. Calling it a "sore point," coach Mike McCarthy said the Packers will go through ball-security drills Thursday in addition to the usual Wednesday and Friday sessions. Greg Jennings, Donald Lee, Vernand Morency, Ryan Grant all fumbled Sunday, and Korey Hall lost the ball on a borderline play that was ruled an incompletion. Lee's fumble ended a Packers drive in the red zone, and Grant's gave the Vikings a final possession late in the fourth quarter. McCarthy said he hadn't seen a decent replay of Grant's fumble but believed the running back didn't make a good enough pocket for the handoff from Brett Favre, causing the ball to hit the lower half of Grant's top arm. McCarthy said Vikings safety Dwight Smith made a good play to strip Lee. However, he said rust wasn't any excuse for Morency's gaffe, which didn't cost the Packers because the ball rolled out of bounds. McCarthy praised Morency's play overall in his season debut, noting his excellent route on a third-down completion.

    Injury update

Safety Nick Collins, cornerbacks Al Harris and Charles Woodson, running backs Brandon Jackson and Vernand Morency and receiver Greg Jennings all could miss practice time this week because of injuries, coach Mike McCarthy said at his press conference this afternoon at Lambeau Field. Collins (knee bruise) was injured in Sunday's win at Minnesota. Harris (back), Woodson (left foot), Jackson (shin strain), Morency (knee) and Jennings (hamstring) all are dealing with previous injuries.

Harris' status for this week's game against Chicago may be in the most doubt. He won't practice Wednesday and also may sit out Thursday, with Friday being "a big day," McCarthy said. Harris has battled back spasms since training camp and has acknowledged he might have to sit out at some point. He hasn't missed game since he became an NFL regular. Jennings also won't practice until Friday. McCarthy said it was "a mistake" to push him to practice Wednesday last week. Morency's problematic knee was "a little sore" Monday, a day after he made his season debut. He, Collins and Woodson likely will be limited in practice Wednesday. Jackson is questionable for Wednesday.
