Hafley taking most of the Defensive coaches with him, although I read somewhere that Gannon was most likely taking his DC from Arizona to be his LB coach, so this move makes sense, in that aspect.

I think Gannon was very high on their list.

Well, he was responsible for our CBs so Im not heartbroken about this. But then again, he was also responsible for our safeties.

The way I remember it, Valentine and Nixon looked really good early in the season. Nixon led the league in PBUs and both were top 20 ish in PFF ranking. Not sure why it dropped off, but we really need to add some talent to the position group.
The Great thing about Gannon is similar to Hafley, DB’s are his specialty. John had 7 consecutive years (2014-2020) coaching the secondary for the Vikings and Colts leading directly to his promotion to DC.

The other positive note, CB is one of the 2 deepest position groups in the 2026 draft based on a large consensus of 86 draft boards and over 500+ team drafts and 500+ 1st Round Mocks. It will change some after the Combine but it’s normally pretty accurate.

CB in particular is thick this draft. There’s a solid 5 count in RD1 which is good for us, because it doesn’t artificially push the demand down the board towards our first couple draft picks. Theres 15 more CB prospects ranked between RD2-4. So this is an ideal draft for GB at CB specifically.

CB then thins out RD5-7 with 8 prospects all currently overlapping RD6-7. With an odd gap of zero in RD5 range

Marques Eversol said he believes Gannon will bring his DC from AZ, Nick Rallis, to be the LB coach. I would imagine he will be bring a few guys who know what he expects.
Interesting. Both Rallis (2018-2020) and Gannon (2014-2017) were entrenched with the Vikings Defense, but not together. They linked up in Philly as the DC and LB’s coach. Then eventually both elevated in Arizona to HC/DC.

I like Al Harris, a former Packer, the way he tuned and changed the Bars D, and fired them up with aggressive play is something the Packers sorely need, why not give him a 2 year try, could surprise everyone

Rallis is an excellent coach and viewed as future HC - this would be awesome move if he brings him.

I wanted no part of an experiment of a DC - which Al would have been IMO. Harris needs to prove himself more IMO.

The leanord turned the job down thing needs to slow down with folks - anyone that has discussed this with actual close ties to the team do not confirm and actually confirm the opposite - he was a finalist but never offered the job.

This is kind of typical with changes at HC, DC, and OC - they all bring in guys they liked working with at their previous team. Hafley is taking some guys, and I'm sure Gannon will do the same.

It's hard to keep track of Leonhard's past and what was offered and what wasn't. My understanding is that he wasn't offered the HC job at WI or the DC job in GB. I think he interviewed for both. He didn't get an offer from either and so could not have turned them down.

I think that's right.

FWIW I think Gannon is the better choice at DC than Leonhard. I can also see why people would feel the opposite.

I'm happy with the Gannon choice. He did a good job in Philly as DC (although I think he coached in the SB the year the Chiefs beat the Eagles, so he doesn't have a SB ring - not a big deal to me.)

And MLF moved quickly, also a good thing. I'm sure Gannon will want to bring in some of his people, and the sooner, the better. There are only two teams still playing and everyone else is going through the annual musical-chairs ritual with coaches.

Yeah I was not comfortable with Al Harris being considered for the DC gig. He's a great Packer and always will be. But for now, DC is too big a jump. He may well end up a DC one day. It's just too early IMO.

I'm not certain Leonhard was actually interested in the job to be honest. I believe he has his sights set on becoming the Badgers head coach when Fickell gets canned. It's possible the Packers realized that through casual conversations and had him and Gannon on an equal footing. They wouldn't have wanted to lose both, so they pulled the switch and grabbed Gannon.

I think people are overreacting to be honest. Some say Gannon is a great hire, others say it's a catastrophe. I don't think there's a strong case that can be made for either school of thought at this point. We're not going to really get a handle on how he moves forward with our defense until it plays out on the field. But there is one thing I'm pretty certain of. If Gannon fails for two years, and I think he's going to pretty much guaranteed two years of service, he will be fired, but quite possibly LeFleur could go with him.
Good stuff V.

I like the Gannon pick. But regardless of pedigree, new coaches need to prove themselves with their new teams. I like that Gannon made it to a SB with Philly, but that won't count for much once training camp begins.

And yeah, if the team hasn't shown marked improvement toward reaching and winning a SB in 2 years, out with MLF and out with his staff. I'm not knocking the fact that winning has been a big story for the last 30 years and provided us with a lot of entertaining football and two Lombardis. There's enough talent on this team now, when healthy, to make a SB run. That will only get better with changes at CB and adding a DL, and with better coaching, top to bottom.

Now what MLF needs is an offensive-minded coach from outside the organization who can truly be an assistant HC - watch the clock and offer up plays that aren't in MLF's playbook. Stevanich (sp?) is better utilized as the OL coach.

OC is a title only on the Packers - MLF calls the offense. He clearly needs help with that. I hope that was discussed at lebgth between Policy, MLF, and Gluten. They can't comeback with the same approach and make a legit run at the SB, IMO.

I wonder what Gannon's goals are now. Does he hope to be a HC again someday? I think he had a raw deal in AZ. The previous Cardinal coach was calling plays for the Commanders. If Gannon does have success again I hope he lands somewhere better than the Raiders.

CB no longer a need as we have added a Probowler for next year.

Keisan Nixon is now going to the probowl.

There goes another one to Hafley's staff. With the way the secondary overall played this past year, I'm fine with that.

Yea, if I remember right, Gannon started as a DB coach. I'm optimistic he will field a very good secondary...

Our secondary looked great I thought!!!! :) you know. When Parsons, Wyatt, LVN, and Gary were in there....
But..... Parsons, Wyatt out, LVN out injured. Gary was the last of the 4 amigos left standing. And the secondary started looking suspect again...

Wellll chit. DC, Secondary, and now LB coaches gone too.

Looking like more of a rebuild on the def coaching staff now.

You'll have that sometimes. I have faith Gannon will produce a similarly great group.

Big fan of this hire just based on the unpredictability, playing towards the strengths of your team, and the weaknesses of the opponents. Being scheme-less.

If you know the game plan and the tendencies of your opponent, you can create a game-plan to counteract them.
If you don't have strong tendencies/patterns, alignments, and your central game-plan changes that makes it exponentially more difficult to game-plan against.

I don't know if he's going to be successful, but I understand why MLF wanted to hire him.

Gannon has a Super Bowl ring as a DC. How many does Leonhard have? And his time as the Cardinals HC is irrelevant. It's a completely different job.

Let's say a guy was the engine specialist for Jimmy Johnson. Then he goes on to become chief mechanic (mostly a supervisory role) for Danica Patrick and 3 years later, he get fired. Are you going to second guess hiring him on as your engine specialist just because he was CM on a crappy team?
In the 2022 season, Gannon's defense collapsed in the second half of the Super Bowl against KC giving up 17 4th quarter points in a game Philly lost 38-35. Gannon was the HC of the Cardinals when Philly got their ring last year.
