My advice if you are going to Packer practice session tonight at 6:00 pm (Tuesday) at East High School's City Stadium. Get there early for convenient parking spot and a seat at the stadium. Capacity is only 4,000 at East High City Stadium. after that, there is only standing room out City Stadium . Tonite There is also a Green Bay Bullfrogs baseball game and the Joannes Park Equatic Center (swimming pool) located near City Stadium to add to congestion .

After 46 years, Packers return to City Stadium tonight

Evening practice features East High dance team, pass-the-hat fundraiser

Press-Gazette

It's a homecoming almost 50 years in the making. Tonight marks the Green Bay Packers' first evening practice at their former home — City Stadium.

The last time the Packers practiced at the field next to Green Bay East High School was Aug. 5, 1961, in an intrasquad game led by coach Vince Lombardi. Before that, the Packers called the field home from 1925 to 1956.

When it was built, barely in time for the 1925 season opener, City Stadium had room for 6,000 fans. After several expansions, the seating capacity was more than 25,000.

Gates to the historic stadium will open at 5 p.m. with festivities — such as East High's pep band, cheer team and dance team — warming up the crowd around 5:45 p.m.

The only entry will be through the stadium's main gates near Baird and East Walnut streets, on the west side of the field.

The Packers will hit the field for practice at 6:30 p.m., with commentary by Bill Jartz, the public address announcer at Lambeau Field.

Admission is free, but in keeping with the 1920s and '30s tradition of passing the hat, donations will be accepted to benefit the new Green Bay Children's Museum. Members of the East football team will collect those donations during the practice.

Although the stadium has 2,300 permanent seats, standing-room-only areas also will be available. In addition, 1,500 temporary bleacher seats have been erected by Always Available Seating of Greenleaf.

Fans are urged to park in the lots at East High School, 1415 E. Walnut St.; Washington Middle School, 314 S. Baird St.; Nicolet School, 1309 Elm St.; Sts. Peter and Paul Church, 710 N. Baird St.; Sullivan School, 1567 Deckner Ave.; and the Riverside Ballroom, 1516 Main St. Access to the stadium from the latter two sites is available on the pedestrian bridge over the East River.

Baird Street will be closed from Walnut Street to Main Street from 4 to 10 p.m. The practice will end at about 9 p.m.

Vendors will be in front of the main gates to the stadium. Complimentary pennants celebrating the 50th anniversary of Lambeau Field will be distributed to the first 2,000 people who enter the stadium.

Concession stands will be operated by East booster clubs. No alcohol will be served. Carry-ins and smoking also are prohibited.

Additionally, the Green Bay Bullfrogs baseball team will be playing nearby at Joannes Stadium, making the area even more congested. The Northwoods League game against the Brainerd Blue Thunder begins at 7:05 p.m.

People attending the baseball game are urged to park on the streets south of Joannes Stadium or at lots near the Riverside Ballroom and Teamsters Union building, 1546 Main St., again using the pedestrian bridge.

The Green Bay chapter of NFL Alumni is providing free tickets to the first 500 children ages 12 and younger attending the Bullfrogs game.

It's 8:30 AM as I type this. I'll bet there is a handful of people camped out right now waiting to get in.
