Mainly agree but Willis wasn't a veteran. I think they have to be realistic with those guys and not just keep them on a hope and a prayer. I have thought that Garrapola is a QB with skills but has had bad luck. So I'd be good with that.
May be a semantic issue with 'veteran', but Willis played in as many games over as many years with the Titans as with the Pack.

Willis was the "perfect" backup candidate for the Packers. A guy with a lot of talent, decent game experience, but untapped. It turned out to be a totally savvy move by Gute and one I hope he repeats again soon. All Willis cost the Packers (besides salary) was a 7th round pick.

It is interesting to look at what Willis did while a Titan and what he did as a Packers. As you pointed out, he played in 11 games for each team and his stats were so much better while he was a Packer. Proof that being coached up and playing with a better team can make a player that much better.

I hope Willis thrives as a Dolphin. If he does, he will look back on being traded from the Titans to the Packers as possibly a move that saved his Football career.

I predict we nab Kyron Drones from Texas Tech in UDFA and we trade for Anthony Richardson after the draft or someone in the same trade scenario.
I just do not feel good about Ridder even though his mobility is terrific. I do not like Garopollo's immobility but he came from 2 winning organizations, NE and SF. And Flacco is no Fran Tarkenton but at his age he showed last year he can still get it done. So it says something for fossil fuel.

Any backup QB you sign, at least at an affordable price, is going to have their own issues. If I was looking for a backup QB I would rank them on:

1. Experience
2. Previous success/failures
3. Ability to read a defense and learn playbooks
4. Locker room compatability
5. Body isn't completely broken down and has an eighth of a tank of gas left.

Overall, I think your best bet is finding a veteran that still wants to be in the sport and possibly still play on very little notice. A guy that loves the game of football, and still has enough gas in the tank to play at a decent level if called upon. My #3 is probably a bit more important than all the others, but I assume if he passes #1 and #2, then 3 is a big measuring stick.

Unless they can run like Willis; I'd start grading them on arm strength and accuracy

All 3 traits are a plus. I think in Green Bay Willis proved that he could pass, just as well as he could run. Miami is in total rebuild mode, so this year might not be a good one to judge Malik on, but I think he will prove himself to be an above average QB before too long.

I think backup QB's that get by only with their legs are fine for a quarter or 2, but if that is all they have, defenses will shut them down pretty quickly.

I did say if they can run like Willis. That's a very high bar. But yes, he showed that he could throw it.

I think we saw with a player like Kaepernick that it doesn't take defenses long to scheme against a QB that relies mostly on his running ability. While I agree with you that it's nice to have a QB with good wheels, I think that there can be a pitfall to it as well. If that is his best strength, it can be over-relied on and also lead to more injuries.

However, we are talking a backup here. Rather than have one that's just a lesser version of your starter, maybe throwing a whole new concept at the D for a short time is a plus.

I see a lot of talk about Russell Wilson, but I don't see anyone mention his ego. He had some real locker room issues in Denver, and his level of play dropped off drastically at the same time he was going full-blown prima donna. It appears he got past the locker room problems in Pittsburgh and New York (for the most part, anyway), but he sounds like he still has some stability issues. I'm not sure he'd be a good fit with all these young players.

I mean yeah, if it is just for a short time, you get away with it. However, when that backup becomes your known starter beyond that quarter or 2, then a good DC is going to really study how to stop your backup. That was why it was so frustrating as a Packer fan to see Kaepernick pick up all those running yards on 2 different occasions.....the second time Capers and the Packers faced him in the playoffs no less. That first playoff game he seemed to come out of nowhere with his 181 yards rushing. Then to follow that up with some easy 98 yards of rushing in the following years playoff game, made me want Capers fired on the spot.

If I was Gute, I would only be interested in Wilson if his head is still in the game and he wants to come in as the obvious backup and mentor to Jordan. I know some fans doubt his ability to still play the game, but as a backup, if his head was fully in, I would trust his on the field abilities.

Willis was not a veteran. Thanks for correcting that. I'm really looking forward to his career as a starter in MIA.

Adding a veteran doesn't mean a GM should stop drafting backups. The Packers have developed a few rookies who were later traded for draft picks. And ya never know when injury will hit.

Anyway, I'd still like a veteran BU while developing a rookie on the PS. I have full confidence in Gluten's ability to make this happen.

All good points 13. Wilson sounds like he's very bitter that his amazing years in Seattle stopped so abruptly. Welcome to the club Russell.......

None of us are measured on what we've done in the past (well, for this discussion anyway). The NFL is looking for what a player can add to the team now. If Wilson can't accept that he'll never start again, then stay away from him. The chemistry on the Packers seems too good to let one guy disrupt it.

I'd like to see them draft North Dakota State Qb Cole Payton or Arkansas Qb Taylen Green.

Both boast a similar skill set to departed backup Malik Willis and I think Mlf could win with them for a couple games if necessary just as he did with Willis

So if Jordan Love gets injured in Week 1, you would be comfortable trotting either of these 2 guys out on the field?

I get a team like the Dolphins spending a 5th round on 1 of these guys, but not the Packers. They have their starting QB for years to come, they don't need a project QB that probably isn't ready to play in the NFL for several years.

I guess I grew up during the Favre era...so Im a fan of developing a young guy as your backup. Ala Mark Burnell, Ty Detmer, Aaron Brooks and Matt Hasselbeck. I suppose Rodgers is a part of that list too

They have Ridder as backup already. Anyone drafted later day 3 is going to get to the practice squad for a red-shirt year of development.

Payton drafted by the Eagles, Green by the Browns.
Thanks HE. Good call by quick. Not that easy to find late round QBs who are selected, rather than sliding to FA.

On another topic, I was surprised Gluten didn't take a RB. There is no one on the current roster to replace Wilson. I haven't seen it mentioned a lot on the draft theads.
