It's the procedural stuff that's killer to me too... I do think for sure that reflects a lot on coaching but also some on the part of the player, it's just like someone who simply isn't studying enough to pass their test, so to speak
I'm a Gators fan and something new coach Sumrall said a while back on penalties was really interesting to me. He basically was talking about how stuff like roughing, holding, PI, etc...you obviously don't WANT those things to happen but he more or less said he's willing to give a lot more leeway there. If you tackle the QB and get flagged for it, you are in a battle with your opponent and get called for holding, you get beat in coverage and called for DPI, etc...He characterized those as "effort" penalties, stuff that happens while you're trying to make a play and trying to do the right thing. If you are putting in good effort and catch a flag for it, you want to try and iron that out but it is what it is, it happens in the game
On the other hand though he was also clear about how procedural and discipline issues are the real back breakers because that IS precisely the stuff you can really iron out. You might not ever be able to teach a lineman to NEVER hold but you can ensure that they are always lined up right and avoid illegal formation. You can make sure your team is communicating well and getting the playcall and adjustments in time to never have to take a delay penalty. You can instill the discipline that ensures you won't get guys caught for taunting or other unsportsmanlike calls. And so on...
So for us it's like, in the Falcons game for instance - when McClellan gets flagged for roughing, that was a killer penalty for us, but at the same time there's really nothing much you can do about it. I think it was a bad call, and ultimately it was just McClellan trying to make a play. I don't think he was being undisciplined, he wasn't malicious, there wasn't really anything to "clean up" there. These things happen, it sucks, but it is what it is. It's the stuff that you CAN control though that really adds up quickly
