Fields signed a 2 year 40 million dollar contract with 30 million guaranteed. Or so I just read. What would Willis have to get to net us a 3rd rounder? Does the fact he was only here two years come into play at all?
Prior to the '25 season Fields' deal was $20mil/yr & was worth a 4th Comp pick. A $21mil/yr deal was worthy of a 3rd.

There are 19 QB's making more than Fields, so a team signing Willis would REALLY believe him to be their starter to pay him $21mil+/yr. Doubt any team will annoint him starter, but a few will give him an honest shot to compete for it. Guessing he'll get GB a 4th or 5th Comp & he'll get a $15-$20mil/yr deal.

Interesting ? @gopkrs

It’s not that easy, but certainly $$ factors. It seems that contract gets the attention, but playing time is also huge. Meaning Makik can’t be one of a rotisserie carousel of QB’s. Then compensatory formulas also factor performance and Postseason accolades for likely fringe of round players.

Just my guess but his value sky rocketed at Chicago. Just throwing out a guess he took himself from 5th RD grade to Solid 4th RD grade. Maybe maybe he can improve on that if he just goes out with a career performance. Yet we spent a 7th? On him. Pure Brilliance by Gutey.

Yup and THIS is why Malik wasn't traded before the season. Which is what some posters seemed to think should have happened.

Also, lesson to Gute. A quality backup QB is a must for a potential playoff team. Said player should have more NFL experience than just a few mop-up appearances.

Yeah you and I have always agreed on the value of a backup QB.

Malik was an excellent choice. There’s a real possibility we could get a 3rd-4th RD comp as a kickback in our future.

Malik since coming to GB

52/68 684 Yards
76.5% comp
5 TD 0 INT
2-2 (OT loss)
1 Game Winning Drive
13.2 per catch
131% Passer rating
81% QB rating
28 1st Downs Passing
11 1st Downs Rushing
Rushing 33/201 (6.1/Run)
1 Rush TD

Definitely. Look at the Vikings. Their D beat the Lions and the Giants. But Brosmer is awful.

Or actually be a good player. Which we should have a good idea. Just keep shuffling them until we have a keeper. Some teams do a better job than others having a decent backup. Until Willis, we were doing a crummy job. And even worse, keeping some on the team for multiple years. Imho But this is almost the playoffs. I'm a bit ashamed to be talking of comp picks. I mean, talking about it won't change a thing and we are coming up on the playoffs. I'm starting to get excited. We have a good team. If we don't have turnovers and maybe get a few; we have a chance at this.

The Packers could win the Super Bowl and still get comp picks. I dont think making a note that Willis will look to gain alot and in turn that could help the Packers is something to be ashamed about. Its a footnote to the game. Now if I said I hope Willis is horrible so that reduces his market and gives the Packers a chance to retain him.. I'd be ashamed to think like that.

I fully agree with all of that. There's no reason discussing comp picks should be taboo; this is just the reality of the situation. I think every one of us has known for almost 2 full years that this was almost certainly going to come to this. The only way it wouldn't happen this way is if Willis played poorly enough that we could afford to keep him, and I'm sure nobody here would have wanted that.

It's an absolute certainty that Willis is lost and gone forever, so the best outcome for which we should hope is that he has a "Matt Flynn" level game this weekend, and looks like the 2nd coming of John Elway. If he goes out there and rocks the Casbah, and whomps those Crows, the bidding war for him on March 11th will be intense, and I'd say it's likely that at least one team will overpay. The more they overpay, the better pick we get in 2027.

Gone are the days when a team can keep Steve Young on the bench for years on end. We have too many young mouths to feed (and besides, the circumstances are different... Montana was clearly coming to the end of his career, and it was just a matter of months at any given point when Young would be taking over - and that's not the case here, because Jordan is still in his prime. Montana to Young could only happen once, and never can again.)

Not if he blew an ACL or Achilles or similar. Then you’re talking missing 1/2 season at minimum. Personally I wouldn’t be playing Goff but I fully realize Dan Campbell goes for it on 4th n 2 from his own 25 yard line!
The what if game cuts both ways. You can make up whatever what if you want. Doesnt mean it will happen but since we are doing this dance heres my what if.
goff goes out and plays a great game, throws several TD passes, beats the bears easily, doesnt get hurt, and hands us the division title because the bears lose their last 2 games.

As much talent as the Lions have there will be no repeat of the blowout they delivered to the Bears in WK 2. The Bears will pound it and prey on that battered secondary. And they will blitz Goff all day. It will be a cold day in more ways than one. Can Campbell put some spark in them as 2025 fades into black?

Good points and a good question. I just don't see Campbell settling for a sub .500 season. If the unthinkable happens and the Packers lose tonite, that last Bears' game won't matter. Even so, I just don't see Campbell folding.

Correct. Campbell doesn't strike me as the kind of guy who will allow a sub .500 season. Now the Packers still have to beat the Ravens tonight, and they will, even with Willis starting. The Niners should beat the Bears in Santa Clara. So there's still a reasonable chance the Packers win the North, but it's less than 50% IMO.

In one sense, a Packers loss tonight won't be catastrophic. They can then rest starters against the queens.

But with the exception of CR, we all want a win tonite. Keep swinging MLF!

I think the Packers need to play Saturday like the #3 seed is on the line. If we Win and Chicago just happens to drop 1 game?

Week 17-18 is currently for the Division and with Chicago playing Detroit and us playing Vikes there’s a glimmer of opportunity to finish strong as a #3 Seed and play the 6 seed at home
Yeah there's a reasonable chance the Packers win the North. Not likely, but possible.

At this point I think most Packer fans are thankful to have had Willis for 2 years on a cheap contract. That doesn't happen very often for the Packers. Well the "cheap deal" does, but the quality of QB doesn't.

While it is great to groom a late round rookie QB to perhaps be your quality backup, I see 2 problems with that. Too often you don't have a quality QB and worse, you have one with no NFL experience. Even if you find out you have a quality QB in year 3 or 4, you can't keep him, due to his new value.

When Malik rides off into the sunset, I hope Gute thinks long and hard about the backup QB position for 2026 and beyond. Instead of wasting a mid to late round pick on one, go find a proven vet that is willing to be your #2, at a reasonable price.

Ahhh...someone who is thinking ahead and planning for the future. While the coaches have to focus on this season, we do need people who are looking ahead if we want to remain a top team and add the core of players we already have.

Hey Poker, what do you think Willis's value will be as a FA? There's probably a team willing to pay him starter money. My guess is $20 mil AAV on a one-year, prove-it deal. Too high for a backup, unfortunately.

Willis has shown the value of a good QB as backup. Although in the games i've seen, he looks like a legit starter. Certainly not an elite talent (yet?) but in the upper 40% of starters.

Regardless, and to your point, the Packers will need a solid backup next season. They don't grow on trees, and GB probably can't afford much more than $5 mil AAV. A lot of ways Gluten can go with this, but the odds of finding another Willis are low. Maybe find a gem late in the draft. Gluten is very good at that. It's still a dice roll with most draftees. Too many Mitch Trubisky and Trey Vance (sp?) types.

Healthy but very rusty. Like in 2011 against the Giants or 2021 against the 49ers.
I doubt there's much value in resting players. This is the Packers we're writing about. They get so many non-contact injuries, that they get injured in practice too.

Unless the Packers are willing to stop players from practicing or doing anything strenuous, they won't be able to guard against injuries.

The injury epidemic keeps rolling and I doubt 'resting' guys is going to do much.

It seems that one team that's giving Willis a hard look is the Steelers. It all depends on whether ARod will stick around for another season or whether he retires after this one. Draft a QB and bring in Willis to start for a year or two.
There was talk early in the week in the Vikings camp. J.J. and his injuries have thrown a cog in the purple wheel for 2026. They will be watching Willis in these last 2 games.

Hey you might want to play the lottery this week! I could play your dance even further. GB wins the Division and other teams get risky and play their QB’s in meaningless games and after next preseason 1/2 the starting QB’s are on IR. GB goes on to a perfect season and wins 20-0. This is fun!

Let’s just start by Winning tonight and then I’ll freely jump in your dance that Goff plays 4Q of a meaningless game. I say that, but truly the Lions may not want to finish dead last in the North and MN holds the Tiebreaker so there’s maybe that being used as something to play for.
