Just win, baby!!! That was Al Davis’s motto for the Oakland Raiders and that’s exactly what the Packers did on Sunday. And the Bears and the Giants - two of the better teams in the NFC - did the same as well.

The NFL season is a long 16-game journey, a marathon that tests the physical and mental limits of players and coaches. There are peaks and valleys, high points and low points.

The Packers did not play well on Sunday. Fans can blame this on the numerous injuries the team has sustained through the first eight weeks of the season or on the fact that the players just did not have the proper amount of energy for the game.

Last I checked they faced a team that receives pay checks for playing and coaching as well. Victories are so hard to come by in this league that any ‘W,’ whether against a 5-0 Houston team or a struggling 1-5 Jacksonville team, should be appreciated.

It was a long, long time ago but for 20 years, the Packers were the Jaguars. Green Bay was an inept team that everyone would circle on their calendar in the pre-season and put a ‘W’ next to it. Let’s all be happy how much things have changed and appreciate the fact that we can be disappointed with a nine-point win.

The Packers played Sunday with eight of their opening day starters not in the lineup. Some are out for the season but most will hopefully return for the stretch run. This gives an opportunity to the younger players to gain some much needed game experience and will make the team stronger once the injured veterans (Charles Woodson, Greg Jennings, Sam Shields, etc.) return to the lineup.

Halfway through the season and the Packers are in the mix for a playoff birth. I think that they are 1 of 6 teams that could represent the NFC in the Super Bowl along with the Giants, Bears, Falcons, 49ers and Seahawks.

The competition is fierce and there is no longer a great disparity in regards to talent across the league. That is why winning a game like the Packers played on Sunday is so crucial.

Green Bay did not play its best or up to the standard set over the previous two games. The Packers still won, and, come late December, when every win counts for tie-breaking scenarios and playoff seeding, that is all that will matter.

No one will remember that they didn’t cover a 15-point spread against a 1-5 Jacksonville team on the last Sunday of October. . . . Just Win Baby!!!
