What are you thankful for this year - one Packers, one non-Packers thought.

I'm thankful that for yet another season, my team is good enough to be in consideration for the post season.

Non-Packers, I'm thankful that all of my family is relatively healthy and that I'll be seeing both of my brothers for the first time together in decades.

Football has been entertaining. I'm 50, so I missed all of the horrible 70s Packers but did start watching in the 80s. I really started watching after the Bears '85 season, because I figured our team was probably good too. Boy was I wrong! The magical '89 season with the Majik man - the comeback Pack - the Cardiac Pack - was exciting for the first time. Unfortunately, it was still tough to watch Lindy Infante teams. Then came Ron W and our world changed. It was a perfect time for me since I was playing HS football at the same time the Packers became good. They inspired me to keep play all those years despite winning only one game.

I suppose that the Badgers got good about the same time under Barry. I went the dark way to Minnesota, endured many years of losing there, but was just able to throw my dad's Badger flag out of my house yesterday! Go Gophers! Go Pack!! :D

I still recall Ron Vanderkellen leading the 1962 Badgers comeback against USC in the Rose Bowl. They came up short 42-37. But it was still exciting.
Ron never panned out in the pros. But as a rookie he got to fill in for Tarkenton in 1963 and led the Vikings to a 17-17 tie with the Bears which kept the Packers in the race that season.

That Rose Bowl was 2 days after the Packers beat the Giants in that bitter, cold, arctic, windy championship game. Then you are suddenly watching the Tournament of Roses in Pasadena in sunny, summer weather. What a contrast! Of course it was brought to us in living color on NBC.

Color was not widespread but it was there for those who could afford it. NBC was the only network at the time that used color, although not for every program. You saw it for the World Series and certain programs like Bonanza. As a kid I could sneak in the bowling alley and peep at the TV in the bar.

During that year, my pacifier would have been a give away I was underage.
