This is from another article in the same copy of the Press-Gazette.

"Bart Starr was named the winner of Sport Magazine Super Bowl Award as the outstanding player of Sunday's game . He will receive a 1961 Corvette at a luncheon in New York.. Starr is the fourth Packer to win the coveted award since 1958. Paul Hornung in 1961, Ray Nitschke in 1962 and Jim Taylor in 1965.

Is this a typo or did they really give him a used car?? :rotflmao:

Zombieslayer Posted "Some of the older folks here could tell you this story much better than I could. In the 1st Super Bowl, McGee wasn't even expecting to play. He had been out drinking the night before and was on only a few hours of sleep, and was badly hungover. I think either Dale or Dowler went down that game, and McGee had to come in. He ended up having a spectacular day.""

Super Bowl Packers 35 Chief's 10- on January 15, 1967.

I will let former Green Bay Press-Gazette Sports Editor Art Daley tell the story:

.

" McGee in his 11th year of pro football was great. he got his chance when Boyd Dowler was hurt on 3rd play of the game. and caught twp touchdown passes of 37 and 17 yards and set up 5th Touchdown on 31 yard catch. Maxie finished with seven catches and 138 yards.

Ellijah Pitts scored two touchdowns on cracks (runs)of 3 and I yards and (FB)Jim Taylor scored the other touchdown on a 14 yard run.

Green Bay's big indivdual gun was (QB) Bart Starr , the NFL's "Most Valuable Player." he carried on that tradition winning the nod as the Super Bowls first Outstanding player.

Starr completed 18 of 23 passes for 250 yards and Two Touchdowns ...and was successful on 11 of 13 third down plays. He marched th Bays on touchdown drives of 80, 73, 5, 56, 80 yards.

The Packers offense never let up and rolled up 358 yards including 228 in the air, (and had ) 21 first downs and average of 5.6 yards per play compared to the Chiefs' 3.7. The Bays ran 64 plays, the Chiefs 59."

The Sport magazine editor said that both Starr and McGee were considered for the award but "we selected Starr for his excellent overall job in leading the Packer offense of its decisive victory."

These articles were From my very yellow (with age) copy of the Green Bay Press-Gazette dated Monday, January 16, 1967. I hope you enjoyed the articles

Max McGee did tell the story that he was out most of the night before the Super Bowl I game, but he had a great game anyway. .

Thank you. I remember reading that many years ago.

PackFaninSC- Sorry! That "1961" was a typo error. it should have read 1967 Corvette.

Paul Hornung received the 1961 Corvette after the Packers won 1961 NFL Championship game by beating the New York Giants 37-0 at City Stadium.( Since 1965, renamed Lambeau Field)
\
From the Monday. January 1, 1962 Green Bay Press-Gazette written by PG sports editor Art Daley.

"The Packers every one a hero Sunday, were offensive powered by the fabulous Paul Hornung, the who demonstrated why he was the NFL's most valuable player.

Hornung scored the first 19 points of the game on the first touchdown , three field goals and four extra points.. He led the Packers' rushing, perhaps adding some punch lost due to Jin Taylor's injury., with 80 yards in 20 carries. He caught 3 passes for 47 yards.."
