Ha in one way i do if you know what i mean. :D Chelsea were on the end of a shoot out loss in Moscow in 2008 not a good feeling. :(:x3: At least with a goalden goal its resulted from open play.

So, if you could change the penalty kick situation, what would you replace it with?

Goalden Goal for me to settle it no penalties, if no goal a replay and another GG in extra time if needed. Very few European Cup Finals needed replays back in the day, a team always seemed to win in open play on the night.

Interesting idea.

If you want better chances of scoring in extra time, what does everyone think of having 1 team having an extra man (11 versus 10) in the first extra time, and the other team gets a man advantage for the 2nd extra time (15 minutes each)?

Thats an interesting idea, but wayyy too radical for most European soccer types i think. ;)

I'm all for sticking with the replays, i think its quite easy to see it from a 'big club' point of view, in regards to settling it on the same day.

But, when you look at Cambridge's situation for example, they're a League 2 club (4th tier), and drew at home friday night with Man Utd. Now, per year Cambridge's income is around £1.6m. For the replay alone they'll make £1.7m. Thats huge for small clubs.

Slightly off topic, but regarding settling matches. Check out Group D of the African Nations Cup:

Ivory Coast
Mali
Cameroon
Guinea

All have played twice, in all 4 game it has ended 1-1, so they're all on 2pts, all have 0 goal difference, all scored twice and conceded twice.

Now, if both games finish 1-1 again tomorow, and they're all stuck on 3pts with same goal difference etc, they'll DRAW LOTS to see who goes through out of the group stage

I am showing my age again Tyce, but do you remember the old NASL version?

I don't remember what NASL extra time rules were, but I do remember they had an accelerated point system.

3 pts for a win plus a point for every goal scored up to 3 goals per game. So I think there was a max of 6 points possible per game... at least that's what I remember. I could be wrong. Am I close?

Replays would only work for Club cup matches like FA Cup. It would not work for tournaments like the World Cup. There is no time for a "replay". Penalty kicks would have to be used or some other game ending scenario would have to be used.

You may be bang on with that. Here is what I wanted to mention. There were some modifications to "Americanize" the sport. Like the clock counting down, etc. Another one was this 35 yard line acting sort of like an ice hockey blue line to prevent successful use of offside traps.

Anyway, the penalty shootouts to decide games went like this. The shooter was given the ball at either point where the nearest 35 yard line met the touch line. He was then allowed to race in on goal. The goalkeeper was permitted to come out and attack the ball to prevent a score. hahaha....

OMG, that's right. I completely forgot about that. Good memory.

Exactly and they deserved their replay and the money for their efforts.

If i remember rightly 1982 was the first World Cup year that penalties were used, before that their was a league format in the later stages of the competition. How about the toss of a coin to decide (old school).............:geek::D

Clattenburg is set to referee the Man City - Chelsea match this weekend. I don't know what to make of that. It is probably bad news.

That's a big matchup Saturday morning. A real test.

3 points for Chelsea and it's a long road for City to catch up.

3 points for City and the lead narrows quite significantly.

------------------------

And I don't know anything about Clattenburg.

Any result is not going to be a killer for either team really, lots of football to be played. Im sure there will be one or two slip-ups from either side in the other matches, the FA Cup proved that.

Fully agree but still makes me sad to see what happened to Rangers just because of a reckless management.
Yeah I'm afraid County might be relegated after this season, it'a tough for such a small club with their limited possibilities, especially financially, to play in the SPL frequently for a longer period of time.
Btw -nice avatar
whats happening at the rangers is making the whole of Scottish football a running Joke, and i do feel sorry for most of the fans, they really need to get things sorted out at that club
