Season Opener Preview:
Chicago @ Green Bay

Vegas Line: Chicago by 4
Over/Under: 37

Sterling's Forecast

Packers 17
Bears 13

Game of defense is won in spectacular fashion as Packers rookie Will Mars Blackmon takes a punt home 63 yards with 4 minutes left for the winning touchdown.

Packers hounded Bears QB Brian Griese into 2 ints, sacking him 5 times in the game, 2 by Kabeer Gbaja Biamila and one each by rookie AJ Hawk, Aaron Kampman, and Cullen Jenkins.

Newcomer Charles Woodson and 2nd year safety Nick Collins intercepted Griese, with Collins' setting up a Brett Favre to Bubba Franks 4 yard TD pass early in the 3rd quarter as the Packers cut the Bears lead to 13-10.

Green Bay's offense started slowly against the tough Bears defense, but the key for Green Bay was only one turnover. Favre's 3rd pass of the game was tipped at the line of scrimmage, and deflected right to Brian Urlacher who waltzed in untouched 31 yards for a quick Bears touchdown and a 7-0 lead. The Bears offense was only able to muster 6 points on two long field goals by rookie kicker Josh Huston. The Packers revamped defense, with rookies Hawk and Abdul Hodge joining Nick Barnett in swarmed Bears RB's Thomas Jones and Cedric Benson, holding them to a combine 68 yards on 31 carries. After the game, Jones complained that he didn't get into a groove because he only had 16 carries, signaling trouble ahead for Lovie Smith as he tries to incorporate 2nd year stud Benson into the rotation.

Also, Griese struggled mightily in his first start for the Bears, after Rex Grossman underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee last week, following his knee injury sustained on the Bears first play of their final preseason game last week. Grossman is expected back by mid October.

For the Packers on offense, they struggled to sustain drives, and also suffered with the kicking game, missing two field goals inside of 43 yards.
Samkon Gado and Najeh Davenport shouldered the running game with Ahman Green being placed on the physically unable to perform list last week. Green Bay is reportedly bringing in a group of recent RB waiver victims for a tryout this week and will sign one of them. Travis Henry from Tennessee, Michael Bennett from New Orleans, and Priest Holmes have been mentioned as possible suitors, but Holmes would have to pass a physical due to his concussions last season. Henry was released as the Titans felt he was expendable with the rookie Lendale White and Chris Brown anchoring the way.

Packers GM Ted Thompson also confirmed the rumor that rookie kicker Connor Hughes will be in town Tuesday for a visit. Hughes was released by New Orleans at the end of a battle with veteran kicker John Carney.
