With the Bills losing to Joe Cool and the Bengals, there could be a restructuring of their offense philosophy...

They can't run the ball!!!

Nice backs (Singletary and Cook), but not built for the conditions up in Buffalo.

They need a bruiser to wear down defenses when the weather gets tough...

They have a nice cache of WRs, capable of producing big plays in crucial moments...

So I propose a trade between Green Bay and Buffalo, swapping RB AJ Dillon and WR Gabe Davis.

Both are pending free agents after the impending 2023 season.

Bills get a running back that fulfills a need and fits their philosophy.

Packers get a WR with great hands, good speed, and toughness.

A great complement and mentor to the young WR duo of Watson and Doubs.

Both teams protect themselves from possible overpaying for a player...

Essentially a 1 year rental that's mutually beneficial...

A player for player swap, equal in salary, and can transform both offenses with minimal financial commitment.

Thoughts?

Only way I could see the thought personally is if Rodgers is back AND GB feels either Taylor or Goodson are ready for a sizeable workload upgrade...AND we feel we can restructure Jones contract enough to even justify having him in GB for 2023.

That is all pretending the Bills want to say yes

Interesting scenario to kick around. I'd LOVE this trade, but Gute & I don't see eye to eye too often. :(
Buffalo has a lot of UFA's and are currently set to be over $8Mil over the cap. Gabe Davis counts $2.75mil towards that cap while AJ Dillon "only" costs $1.33mil so this move helps their cap a little. Their starting OL's return (except Roger Saffold is a UFA) but they lose most of their backup OL's to free agency - but don't think their OL was geared to opening huge holes which Dillon could use.

Unsure about this being the only path.

Naturally with Rodgers returning, this would be a good move (imo) to acquire another pass catcher.

Jone will face restructure of his contract no matter what happens; the decision should solely based on finances.

Jones has produced on the field, and when healthy is a top 5 RB.

If he is favorable to restructure, then of course he should be welcomed back.

Aaron Jones is a better RB than AJ Dillon.

I think this is a viable trade that really benefits both sides.

Not to mention Gabe Davis grew up a Packers fan and would add more leadership to the WR corp.

The same age as Watson and Doubs, Gabe Davis is a young proven veteran.

Green Bay needs to target experience without giving up on youth.

Gabe Davis checks a lot of boxes.

Only way this works out is if you feel you need to fine tune for another run. Without AR12 you're in rebuild mode and this would have a one year rental stealing snaps from this year's draft picks plus whoever you get upcoming draft.

One could argue this move would benefit either Aaron Rodgers, Jordan Love, or any QB for the Packer's next year.

You make a lot assumptions...

1) Are you sure the Packers would be in rebuild mode if indeed Aaron Rodgers doesn't return?

2) Clearly Green Bay needed another competent and healthy WR this past season. Davis wouldn't "steal" any snaps or hinder their progress.

3) Who's to say Green Bay is drafting another WR this upcoming draft?

In my opinion the Bills would be the team opposing this trade.

Well of course but my post was as solely from a GB perspective however.

I understand that, just wanted to point out that I don't consider it to be a realistic proposal as in my opinion the Bills wouldn't agree to that deal.

With a Jones restructure I'd be all over that deal but I don't think the Bills would be remotely interested honestly.

Drafting Mayer at 15 checks a lot of boxes

1. Yes. Without AR12 the Packers will shed a lot of $$$ older vets. Purge the cap to the extent possible.
2. If Lazard is resigned, I expect them to trust him and the 3 draftees from last season to handle spots 1-4.
Going into camp and the first part of the season at least.
3. I figure them to get another early on day 3 to protect themselves if Touri or Doubs are not competent. Maybe as a KR if Nixon goes elsewhere.

If one considers Dillon and Davis to be roughly comparable players in terms of caliber at their respective positions, then I can't see why this trade would happen. The WR spot is worth a lot more money on the market. It would be much simpler for the Bills to keep Davis and draft a back.

Exactly. You aren't trading your WR2 for a RB2. If anything a WR2 should get you a starting RB minimum

1) What does my trade proposal have to do with shedding cap space? Minimal financial impact for '23 season.

2) I would rather save the money and use elsewhere. I can trust Lazard is at best a WR 3 and defintely can trust he will miss multiple games.

3) Idk. We'll see. I can't see Nixon getting a huge deal solely as a return specialist.

To put numbers on it, Gabe Davis is a very similar player to MVS. MVS got 3/30/15 from the Chiefs, or 10M AAV.

That's close to top of market RB money, which Dillon obviously would not warrant if he hit the market. His market value is probably going to be in the range of 6-7M AAV.

Which to be fair I'm fine with doing sooner than later with him, RBs have a shorter career life, get him secured for that first extension period and after that with his style it is less likely he sticks around or can continue to deliver production at sufficient level to pay good money for.

FTR not necessarily now but I'd be fine if during this next year - especially depending on what future holds for Jones.

I would want to see much better production before I invested a second contract in him. I was very disappointed in his 2022.

I still think something was wrong first half. I saw two very different Dillons this year first half to second.

I really want to see if Goodson is what I pictured out of college this next year

Counter argument is adding a known commodity. Dillon adds pass catching out the backfield in addition to running between the tackles.
Drafts are hit or miss.

If Jones was not on the roster, then I wouldn't propose this trade.

Jones is older and still better than Dillon.

Get something for Dillon without overpaying on an extension.

IMO- Gabe Davis is much better than MVS. I am not even sure if AJ Dillon is better than James Cook. The Bills would be getting buffaloed if they made this trade.

They’re very similar both statistically and in terms of role. They’re high variance boundary deep threats. If you polled Bills fans, I bet you’d find they have very similar feelings about him as Packers fans had about MVS.
