Nick Nelson, a top CB prospect from Wisconsin tore his meniscus during a private workout with a team and will have it surgically repaired next week, sources say. Nelson is out 3-4 months but should be healthy for the season.

Saw Nelson mocked as early as a second rounder, guessing that his draft stock falls into the 3rd or 4th now.

What do we think about Ogbonnia Okoronkwo, the edge from Oklahoma?

I have not watched and frankly probably won't get around to it.

Here are the facts:
  • 6'1.6" 253 lbs
  • 33.75" arms
  • 4.77 forty (64th%, combine)
  • 38" vertical (92nd%, combine)
  • 121" broad (81st%, combine); 125" (93rd%, Pro Day)
  • 4.34 short shuttle (74th%, Pro Day)
  • 7.09 three cone (71st%, Pro Day)
  • 27 bench reps (78th%, Combine)
  • 2017:
    • 76 tackles, 47 solo
    • 17.5 TFL, 8 sacks
    • 3 FF, 2 PBU
  • 2016:
    • 71 tackles, 50 solo
    • 12 TFL, 9 sacks
    • 2 FF, 3 PBU
  • Daniel Jeremiah: Never featured him in his top 50
  • Lance Zierlein: 5.60 grade (middle rounds)
  • Josh Norris: Not in his top 50
  • Dane Brugler: #52
  • PFF: #42; highest rated player at Senior Bowl
  • CBS: #15
  • NDT Scouting: #42

Thoughts?

As far as what they do during a visit, I doubt they do much physical activity due to possibly risking injury. I imagine they due a medical check if there is an injury concern and than probably a lot of time just interviewing the prospect. There is a little glossary at the top of that site that gives you a bit of an indication of where/what the visit was.

Strike what I said yesterday, at least in regards to Nick Nelson's visit to the Lions where he tore his meniscus in a private workout. Can't wait for the media and NFLPA to get ahold of this and start talking about measures to compensate injured players when this happens or disallow workouts completely. :coffee:

Tough break for Nelson.

I thought pre-draft insurance policies for prospects were already a thing.

That would be my preferred route for sure. Not really too sure how many obtain them. I know Jaylon Smith had one.

I'm all about drafting players with short term injuries that impacts their stock.

Sidney Jones and Myles Jack are great examples, although Jack's was more severe.

I don't know much about Nelson, but between him and Kentavious Street there's some options there.

Told ya guys you were gonna love this Sutton kid and its just gonna get better. This could get really good. He would be amazing in Green and Gold. The beauty of it is he doesnt have to come in and be the workhorse. I think we could expect to at the very least get some Adams type rookie production. Him working along with Graham in redzone would be a match up nightmare for defenses.

These clips kind of showcase everything he can do which is obviously a lot. We all know he is a big body that can win 50/50 balls but he has the ability to run db's over or juke them in open field. They even lined him up in the "Wildcat". He can even drop dimes as thrower. The guy is a thoroughbred.

I like all those guys but I am a fan of pass rush over great coverage so Landry would be the guy I like the most out of that group. Maybe Hurst if were gonna lean 4-3. Im tired of drafting db's with the top two picks. I hate leaving the games in the balance of db's to begin with and thats coming from a former db. No db out there can cover a guy for too much time with all the rule changes against these prototype receivers and laser arm QB's.

I keep going back to the Seahawks as I lived there due to work during there Super Bowl run years and they shuffled new mid round db's in lineup every year after the loses of Browner and Vernon Maxwell etc etc and didnt miss a beat. They even used Cary Williams one year. Yeah Earl Thomae has range and is smart along with Sherman but pass rush made those guys if you actually go back and watch the games. It was all about disruption up front opposed to coverage sacks. They had 4 guys on the field at all times that could get up field to the QB and disrupt throwing lanes while creating stress on the QB.

To me trying to continue to build the defense from the backend up is a never ending failing challenge.

Boy if you like Sutton, you're really going to love this guy:

As someone who was able to watch Ex Badger Nelson, I was never that impressed by him, at least in the way of a second round pick. He seemed to lose coverage easy and I don't think he has ever recorded an interception. I bow to the scouts as to why they like him, but I never was overly impressed.

I like Hurst, but where does he play for us? I think it's too early to spend an early pick on Mike Daniels replacement.

The defense needs great players. A common problem in drafting is passing on a better guy to fill a need. Draft the best guys and go from there. Let Clark, Daniels, and Hurst form a rotation that keeps all of them fresh and terrorizes offenses. Plus, it's the NFL, the chances both Clark and Daniels play every game are pretty small.

Dont like the comp and I was not that high on Treadwell coming out. Treadwell is not as big as Sutton and has a softer body. Treadwell is also a mediocre athelete so its easy to see why he struggles in NFL. He is more of Geronimo Allison what "we have" if anything.

Its really hard to comp Sutton because he does so many things well. He is kind of a cross between Mike Evans(catch radius) Dez Bryant(physicality) and Terrell Owens(body type). Someone is probably gonna take him top 10. A lot of these mainstream mocks out there are way way off. I think Hurst is gonna go top 10 too. Some of these defensive guys people want will probably be there because the smart teams will reach a little for what there is less of and get what there is more abundance of later.

Isnt that what Thompson was telling us for years that the Packers were drafting the "best player available"

Shouldn't we have a bunch of good players on D?

We do, they just happen to be on other teams now.

I actually have spent most of our draft days scratching my head in a daze looking for ****** and if Gute drafts this Ridley cat like many are mocking im gonna need a lot of it.
I wouldn't be too worried about Ridley. The need is more acute on defense.

The pattern is common: rebuilding teams have many holes and use high picks to draft the best player available across multiple position needs; contending teams want to stay there and draft for need with high picks looking for players who are more plug-and-play than developmental upside.

Well thats just it. With the amount of picks Packers have along with draft position and upgaded draft position in later rounds from Kizer trade they can afford to be very aggresive with going need and getting the guys they love. I actually expect it.

I just read that Roquan Smith was medically red flagged with a shoulder issue. Must not be too big of news, it was buried in a March article. Will this drop him enough and if it does, worth drafting at 14?

Could be a Kevin King thing all over again. I dont want anyone with injury red flags. In fact i think they should pass on Alexander with his injury concerns. Tired of getting guys that have a dispisition to injuries.

He sprained a knee and broke a hand.

That's not a disposition to injuries.

Yeah, if the Packers had actually drafted elite players. That's a big assumption. Just because you think a guy is the best doesn't mean he IS the best. Just because you fail at drafting the best at a certain position doesn't mean you just give up and move somewhere else.

I understand thats its kind of like betting on ponies at the horse track to an extent with measuring probabilities. The bottom line is the Packers need to get a "game changer" at 14 whether its on offense or defense if they use that pick. GM's lose there jobs pretty quickly over making the wrong moves here and most franchises aren't as patient and tolerant as Green Bay is when moving on from a GM. Obviously Rodgers kept the illusion alive helping giving everyone a pass.
