The amusing thing about this is that the smaller Anthony Miller gave Mike Hughes problems on the outside, but the massive Sutton struggled to succeed against Hughes...but only one can play outside because of his size.

Watch the damn tape.

I like Miller so not sure what your point is. You have to realize that this isn't college and wide open spread offenses where you can just go run your stuff. Go ask Nick Saban about the difference. This isnt Bama "Roll Tide"! The difference betweeen the worse and the best team in the NFL is much much smaller then in college.

The NFL is more "situatuonal football". This is what the league has created. Everything is down and distance and match up relevant. You need to get players that fit your scheme that can win "athletically" when the matchup is there. Guys like Calvin Ridley get swallowed up in the NFL cause they atheletically cant win anymore 1 vs 1 against better atheletes without all that Bama power behind him.

Its pretty simple logic so I hope all can follow.

I specifically remember being in the shout box last year poudning the table for a receiver on day 2 and you saying "well get that next year". Go back and look at the log.

Well guess what? Jordy is gone and its next year. We don't have the luxury to sit around and hope our guy falls to 45. We got a soon to be 30 million dollar a year QB and were gonna be running UDFA's out there probably by mid season.

People are gonna be livid in here and blame Gute for not addressing it. I really hope GUTE does the right thing here and doesnt fall into the same "Ted Thompson Trap"

I really hate the contention that the team NEEDS a great WR. How many "great" wide receivers have been on Super Bowl winning teams in recent years? Gronk is really it. I mean, the best WR to have won a Super Bowl since the Packers won it was probably Greg Jennings in 2010! There is NO reason the team needs a high draft pick WR. Those guys are needed to help prop up mediocre QBs (see Beckham). Plus, the draft this year is really poor at the top for wide receivers but fairly deep in the middle.

You realize SMU runs a very simplistic wide open spread offense, right? Kinda what Chad Morris is known for.

You aren't understanding what I'm saying. You have indicated Miller will have to play inside because of his size. On the outside, he handled one of the best press corners in the game. The same CB that Sutton struggled with. It's proof that he can play on the outside. Verifiable, game tape proof.

Ridley has athletically handled the best conference in college football, while playing with an awful QB. And I still wouldn't take him at 14! He wins with speed, route running, and route tempo. You can't play WR at one speed, and he gets that. Watch how often Ridley gets open, and then show me how he was schemed open. Please, go do it. Because that dude wins his routes and creates himself open.

Yeah im blown away! I saw how Jared Abbrederis won with speed and route running in college and seperated from top talent. It was amazing! Well guess what? He jumped about 30 inches at combine and wasnt that strong and now has 13 career receptions in the NFL. Lets go against our typical benchmarks for a receiver and ride that pony again cause it was so fun the first time.

Im blown away with the possibilities. Thanks!

Rodgers has never had an elite receiver so not sure what your point is. We simply dont know how good we would be with one cause he has never had it.

Records could fall.

Yes. And there is a reason that at some point Albert Einstein stopped being a Professor at The Institute for Advanced Studies. There is also a reason you never became a professor at IAS or a GM for the Packers.

Im happy being retired and dabbling in real estate but thanks for the ecouraging remarks.

Packers are allowed 30 post Pro day draft visits by potential draft/UDFA players. In the past it seems they use a few of these for top (first few rounds) prospects and the rest for potential UDFA's.

So far they have or have scheduled visits with:
  • Cichy, Jack ILB Wisconsin
  • Donnerson, Kendall EDGE SE Missouri State
  • Hughes, Mike CB UCF
  • James, Derwin S Florida State
  • Ramesh, Austin FB Wisconsin
  • Vea, Vita DT Washington
Wanted to come back and edit this after I saw the site below. Is it just me or compared to the rest of the NFL teams, are the Packers lacking in visiting with potential prospects?

Congrats man! That's awesome!

What'd you do in life?

Played football in college. Ran some sales teams and raised my two boys. Wife likes to work still and like I posted I am still active in real estate venues.

Actually getting ready to buy a home 7-8 blocks from Lambeau as I finally talked the wife into it. Thats where I want to ride it out.

Yes, records could fall. The defense would also continue to be terrible. The defense doesn't need to be great (go look at how many points Super Bowl winning teams have given up) but the defense needs SOME good players.

I think if the defense was just a level up OR the packers had an elite receiver Rodgers would have at least two more SB rings. So, yes, I would be happy if we ended up with an elite receiver or a top ten defense with the coaching changes / some great draft picks.

Who are the prospects you have to draft if they fall to 14 ?

For me it's...
Saquon Barkley
Quentin Nelson
Minkah Fitzpatrick
Tremaine Edmunds
Bradley Chubb

I think you have to add Ward and James to that list.

I just don't like wards lack of production, 2 career ints doesn't do it for me. I've got the same problem with James to some extent though I'm more concerned about his ability to play the deep center field role that will be needed opposite Jones in 2019. I prefer guys like Justin Reid and Jessie Bates and of course Fitzpatrick who is a playmaker returning 4 of his 9 career ints for tds

The Packers are meeting with Derwin James today. Haven't they met with several 'high' prospects recently?

Question: Does the visit Justin's of an interview or do they work him out as well?

That list I posted doesn't show that many visits by the Packers with "High" prospects, just Vea, James and Hughes. Guessing there will be a few more.

As far as what they do during a visit, I doubt they do much physical activity due to possibly risking injury. I imagine they due a medical check if there is an injury concern and than probably a lot of time just interviewing the prospect. There is a little glossary at the top of that site that gives you a bit of an indication of where/what the visit was.

Jordan Mailata. 6'8" 348 lbs
Rugby player. Google him and watch him run with the ball. I can't imagine trying to tackle him. Not sure how I would use him. Defense is easier to learn. TE if he has any receiving skills.

I would sign them both and have them do that slow motion dancing thing and have a couple players kinda point at them while laughing just before the snap, then run a trick play opposite side :whistling:

Were gonna find out soon enough if it was Capers D or Thompson's picks or a combination of both. Maybe Pettine believes he has a warchest of misused or not fully developed talent? God knows we have drafted enough of them on that side of the ball. Things at the moment are so up in the air on our side that depending on what scheme they lean towards(which we don't know) you can pencil in a certain player available or pencil that same player out. It makes it real hard to get excited at this point about a defensive player without knowing what he is gonna be asked to do.

Now if Pettine has a scheme in mind and a certain player drops to 14 that they feel can be a "game changer" in that scheme then go get him. However, recent years have proven that just drafting defensive players with high picks doesn't guarantee the defense will be better.
