Some players are in what some call "Contract Years" where good play will earn a good contract and a poor year lower offers. It also may affect this year's draft. If Aaron Kampmannis signed. True Luck and Chapman are assumed to not be with team. Several reserves are on one year contracts the most notible Bedell are easily replaceable. In 06 or before the Packers have to deal with the following in decending order of current contract amount.

Ahman Green will he be worth money or long term contract.
Bubba Franks Too costly. Let him go.
Mike Flannagan May be worth a 2 or 3 year contract. Now old.
Ryan Longwell insufficient distance to continue as Packer.
Najeh Davenport We will likely not afford to keep him.
William Henderson Worth 2 year extension.
Grady Jackson Bad deal to sign as he may not finish contract
Grey Ruegamer We should sign him again for a year
Rob Davis We can't find anyone better and/or cheaper????
Kenny Peterson He either proves it or he does not
James Lee Can he start in this league?
Brennan Curtain We will wait and see if worth an offer.

3 RB, 3 DL, 2 OL, 1 TE, 1 K, 1 LS

This off season was easy and painless compared to next year.

As far as your lead-in... How about posting where you've read such things as to who will be gone, pending Kampman is re-signed.... Back that one up, if ya please!

Otherwise, I see you left Brett Favre off the list.... Why?
I already know quite a few who are saying Brett won't retire in 2006.
Just the same, you have to add him to this list as a precursor.

When you were doing your list - did you check out how much against the Cap each would cost?

Brett is under contract for a few years and a tough guy like he can play as long as Elway 38 or Moon 41. NO one has ever said he is retiring. There is absolutely no reason for him to do so. He makes $70 grand a day during the season.

I don't know about Kampmann this year.

Do you really think Chatman and True Luck will be there next year? I do not see either as much a priority as Henderson, Green, and Jackson so I explained that they are not on the list.

The list is to help in case the "unanticipated" draft pick happens.

here, here ... Longwell -- insufficient distance to continue as a Packer?

Longwell in just 8 seasons has become the team's all-time:

~~ scorer with 964 career points;
~~ ranks first in team history with 206 career field goals;
~~ PAT leader with 346 career PATs

The FIFTH-MOST ACCURATE FIELD GOAL SPECIALIST IN NFL HISTORY at 82 percent. This despite kicking outdoors (which half the kickers don't) and in some of the worst weather in the league -- on the frozen tundra.

Led the NFL in points scored since he came into the league in 1997.

Go to your room.

These days with the way that the weather has changed since the late Seventies - it's been warmer, longer... farther up nort' - and the East Coast has been getting all the good weather for footballl - remember the Oakland game where NE was given a free pass which Oakland should have got? It was snowin like a banshee then.. and what about last year, as well.... I hope Lambeau sees that type of weather for the Steeler game... But, these days, I'd have to say that the New England area is pretty good competition for Frozen Tundra type events.... Course, at Lambeau, we don't throw Ice-balls at the Coaching Staff for sport - not even when we're losing the game... Keeping us the Number One place in America to watch a football game.

Longwell just kicks at the end of a very good offensive drive. He is not trusted beyond 45 yards.

He is overpaid. He is paid more than Barnett, Ferguson, Walker, and Grady Jackson.

Amazing you would keep Longwell above everyone else on the list.

Longwell is dependable my friend...teams without great kickers lose games. period. so if you wanna bounce him out of green bay then you have to find at the very least an equal replacement. i don't have to remind you of the awful kicker predicament the niners were (and still are) in...as well as how many games it has cost them.

so who would you bring in? Cortez? hahaha

or maybe draft one in the third round?

let's not forget the 2 W's his leg gave us in pressure situations not so far back as last season.

if Longwell goes then Longwell Jr. better be right behind him.

I second that notion - Sander is havin' a good time over across the pond - and I can't blame him, I was stationed over there for a couple of years and it "is" great fun... completely different than around this Country.. But he'd better be back and READY to step up and prove he is the real deal or I'd cut him lose in a heartbeat.

For the time being - We KEEP Longwell... end of discussion!
Remember, we didn't beat Minnesota either time without him!

I think we actually won 3 games on late field goals last year by Longwell. One against Houston, and I think both regular season games against the Vikings. In today's age of parity with so many close games, you need a reliable fieldgoal kicker in my opinion. We could have easily been 7-9 or possibly even 6-10 if we had an unreliable field goal kicker last year. I don't like Longwell's short kickoffs either, but I'll take his reliability on field goals.

I think its more of who can you bring in then who do you have to let go. In the case of Longwell, who is better out there that we would sign? I just don't see it. He's a good guy, dependable and has a lot more years in him.

How about we leave the speculation for next season...for next season? We don't know how all these guys are going to perform this year. Ahman will probably be good, Henderson may retire, Grady might get injured, etc.

We just don't know and it's useless to speculate IMHO.

Sorry I posted this a year in advance. I wasn't suggesting to cut anyone in 05. I intended to present a list that the Packers will have to deal with and can only keep some of the list. Tough choices will have to be made and I gave limited opinion on the players. The decending order of pay/cap number was to assist in the discussion and impact on draft 05. I thought members of this forum might be able to give opinions on the tough choices and maybe deal with them.

Well go Packers and don't cut Wahle; he's great.

CC - at this point - We're all hyped for the Draft on this Saturday - even though it'll be a few hours before we see the Packers walk up to the plate.

I would infer that possibly RYAN can save that info, for updating on a special web page which we can all click on and review.... Also - all of us can update the info by forwarding it to RYAN when necessary.

My biggest review would be that about half that list will be either in re-negotiations or cut loose period for reasons like AGE or WEAR & TEAR...

Examples --

  • Ahman Green - is NOT "that" durable and is (I think) on the downside of his RB career
Bubba Franks - might actually be around for a couple more years.... seriously!
Flanigan - Senior Player to be sure - but also more like LeRoy Butler on our O-Line, too!
Henderson? - Is expected (from what I hear) - to retire.. when Brett does!
Grady Jackson - needs to sit down & watch from the sidelines after this year... and thanks, partner!
James Lee? - Under the Jim Bates format? Might actually gel for the first time! Keeper!
    Peterson? - Gone - End o' story!
Ruegamer & Curtain? - One year deals (over & over) - nothing more....

On top of all this, which has yet to be mentioned - is what we're going thru right now.... And, that's to do with who will come out for the Draft? What kind of money will be left? How much in the hole will we be for the Darren Sharper types, etc?
Who else may become available (Nose tackle?) in Free Agency next year?

Items which do bear consideration and I'll leave it all.... to Ted Thompson!

Go Packers!

Now that the draft and mini camps have occurred.
I think mini-camp has kept me from being as negative on Chatman.
I do not think Curtain will be in the mix next year but Bedell will be and should get a contract.
Collins and Underwood developement will determine if Little and Freeman are offered contracts in 06.
Most of the players on the 53 players team are in one year or final year of contract.

Well after dropping Curtain from the above list and adding Barry and Nall. It appears the Packers will have have almost 50% of a cap(the figure TBD) and half of a team to sign.

The majority of the half to sign will be minimum wage players some of whom are on one year deals with the Packers currently. With signing bonuses spread over time the Packers can afford roster bonuses which count against the current years cap.

The Packers can afford to be creative and yet will have alot of work to do to sign players. They may even do their 2007 uncapped year spending a year early at lower prices if uncapped year happens.

Next offseason will not be boring.

Next Season!
Cheeze..has the California heat melted your brain?

I can't wait for THIS season to start, and you're talkin' about next season?

man, i hate the offseason...you forgot one name on your list though..

MIKE SHERMAN: 6 years as HC of the Pack and no NFC championship game, much less a SB appearance....(i simply cannot face another offseason with this guy if he lets THIS season slip away without, at least, an NFC championship appearance!)

Anybody who thinks Longwell should be gone should look around the league at the sad state of place kickers. This guy does more to help the Packers win than just about any guy on the roster....Favre included.

Lemme see.....damn near 80% career accuracy in the inclimate GB weather. Trusted to 50 yards...and still good a little beyond.

Man...this offseason has gotten to some of us...boredom is a *****!!

Some things to ponder

Regarding Brett: I read a couple of stories from southern newspapers in the off-season where their sportswriters said Favre told Sherman the night of the Vikings playoff loss he was retiring. Sherman told him to think about it, and Favre still was leaning toward retiring as late as March. He decided to give it one more year, but the main reason he's thinking of hanging it is.....2006 roster and the drafting of Aaron Rodgers. He didn't want to leave the team in the lurch. Sherman gave him the offseason off to recover and recharge.

Here's the free agents for next year...the guys with "one" in the column of YROC(years remaining on contract) or the guys with no digit in that column will likely be free agents next year.

Among the notables.....
Green, Mike Flanagan, Bubba, Longwell, Henderson, Wonderlic Walker, ******* Grady, Barry, Nall, Davenpoop, Kampman, O'Sullivan, Lenon, Ruegemer, Fisher, Rob Davis, Brad Bedell, Trulock, O'Dwyer, Curtin, James Lee, Chatman, Cullen Jenkins, Ben Steele, Vonta Leach and a long list of 'street' free agents.

Here's the link:

http://members.cox.net/cappage/2005cap.htm

I see the entire starting backfield and backups, the starting center(article in paper said Packers won't re-sign Flanagan) a great kicker, etc.

The Packers won't be able to hold onto them all. So a core group of the players are likely to be elsewhere next year. This is the last, best chance for a couple of years for the team to move into the playoffs.
I think Brett knows this and I put my money on this is his last year.
