I won't make excuses for bad STs. I don't believe in them. But I will say this past week, they looked competent. Which is a good thing. They seemed energized without making penalties. They should play like that ever week. Especially this week.

Arron Mosby is becoming that returner killer that Oren Bush became for Niners...

Just a little check-in on the state of our ST units for the season thus far...

Packers vs Browns (10-13 L)
Packers held a maximum win probability of 93.2% (leading 10-0 with less than 4 min remaining)
Blocked field goal with 27 seconds left (tied at 10-10), Browns hit a game winning 55-yard field goal as time expires.

Packers vs Cowboys (40-40 T, OT)
Packers held a maximum win probability of 87.4%. At this point we were leading 13-0...until....
We have a PAT blocked and Cowboys return for +2 points.

Packers vs Panthers (13-16 L)
Packers held a maximum win probability of 83.8%.
We missed a field goal with 10:38 left in 3Q (this was during the whole is-he-or-isn't-he-healthy debacle with McManus)
Panthers hit a game-winning 49-yard field goal as time expires

Packers vs Eagles (7-10 L)
Packers held a maximum win probability of 62.9% when it was tied 0-0 just before HT
We had an opportunity to kick a 58 yard field goal, but went for it. Turnover (4:47 left in 3Q)
We had an opportunity to kick a 57 yard field goal, but chose to punt (12:53 left in 4Q)
We attempt a 64 yard field goal to tie with 0:02 left in the game, and it is obviously a bad miss

Packers vs Broncos (26-34 L)
Probably our only loss/tie this year without any major glaring ST errors. We did have 3 penalties on ST for what it's worth

Packers vs Bears (16-22 L, OT)
Packers held a maximum win probability of 97% with 2:48 left in the game (Next Gen Stats put it at 99.5%)
Bears recover onside kick with 1:59 left, tie game, and win in OT

Now I know it's foolish to look at this as though you can just adjust the outcome of one or two plays and have everything else remain unchanged, but it's not unreasonable to say that special teams have been a major contributing factor in 5 out of 6 losses/ties this season. With better special teams play we are very possibly looking at a ~13 win Packers team who's holding the NFC's number one seed.

A somewhat tangentially related not-so-fun fact:
There have been 10 games across the entire NFL this season where a team has not had a single punt. Two of those games involve the Packers.
The rest of the NFL is 8-0.
The Packers are 0-2.

Good breakdown.

I would also add that the Packers special teams units do not do.....anything Special. Their longest kick return is 36 yards. Their longest punt return is 20 yards. They average 25 yds per kick return and 5.6 yds are on punt returns. That ranks them 20th in the NFL on kick return and 31st in punt returns.

Brandon McManus is currently ranked (by percentage) as the #32 FG kicker in the league, his made percentage is 78.6%. McManus is tied for 22nd on XP's, with a 96.7% made percentage.

The Packer ST units rank 9th in the NFL in most penalties, with 21.

A month ago the Rams were ranked 23rd in Special Teams DVOA. The Packers have been between 21st and 28th for most of this season. So, say around 24th, 25th on average.

The Rams made Chase Blackburn their ST coordinator in February of 2023.
They fired him this past week... The straw that broke the camel's back was a missed field goal and allowing a punt return TD in their loss to Seattle.

They also lost to the Eagles after having a late field goal blocked in week 3, and had an extra point blocked in week 5 against the 49ers (went on to lose in OT)
We know Matt often likes to take after his friend and mentor Sean McVay... Why can't he take a page out of McVay's book here?

Note that really shocked a lot of people was Boswell missing that 37 yarder in Detroit yesterday. That FG would have forced the Lions not only to go the distance but go for 2.

I noticed the rams put every kick-off into the endzone. Not much confidence in their STs? Or seattle has awesome return men?

Interestingly they have been doing that all year.
The league average for total touchbacks is ~15 and the league average for touchback percentage is about 20%.
The Rams have had 54 kickoffs result in a touchback, or just under 60%
So, seems intentional one way or the other

Because he promoted Bisaccia to assistant head coach and special teams coordinator in 2023 and firing him now might shed some light on the fact that Matt isn't a solid play caller.

Bisaccia signed a 2 yr extension in Jan. '25 keeping him in GB through '26 season. Since he didn't state that he was retiring I'm guessing they asked him to leave & to "save face" he gave up a year's pay?
Wondering if Mason Crosby will be named new ST coach as he's been interested in coming back to GB?

However, IF you meant kick returner, it was January 1, 2023 (Nixon)

If you mean punt return it would be December 28, 2014 (Hyde)

If you mean last blcoked punt return for TD it was in 2012 (Moses)

And before people bemoan it like it is some easy feat every team should have....think on the fact that out of ALL the kickoffs in the entire 2025 regular season only six occurred - Charlie Jones, Kene Nwangwu, Antonio Gibson, Ray Davis, Deonte Banks and Rashid Shaheed all had one. AND that is in the era now where the number of returns has skyrocketed with the new dynamic kickoff rule.

2024 - 7
2023 - 4
2022 - 6
2021 - 9

CRAZY thing...Nwangwu in the five years listed...has 5 of those 32

Punt Returns:

2025 - 15
2024 - 6
2023 - 8
2022 - 3
2021 - 2

Good stuff. While I don't grade Bisaccia necessarily on "How many points has his special teams made or given up", I do grade him on penalties, execution, ave. yards per return, etc. and how that ranks compared to other teams.

I think when Bisaccia was hired and paid one of the top salaries in the NFL for a Special Teams Coordinator, Packer fans were relieved and excited. Honestly, I was and I think we all had the right to be excited. Afterall, special teams in Green Bay had been bad for a long time and at times, the coaches and squads looked terrible. While Bisaccia did improve the team in his first year, taking them from a dead last ranking in 2021 to ranking 17th in 2022. After that, it has gone down hill for Bisaccia and his units. In 2023, the ranking was 27th, 2024 it was 29th, 2025 it was 20th.

I also look at FG/XP units under Bisaccia as being a problem. Whether it has been missed blocks, bad snaps, bad kicks, the kicking units, under various players have been super inconsistent. I put that on coaching.

Anyway, good riddance Rich, I won't miss you. I hope the Packers find a replacement that focuses on execution & concentration, which should reduce mistakes and improve results.

I thought they already bumped up his top assistant. So wouldn't be surprised if he's the next coach. Whoever he is.

For me and I said it before, if it was Rich's decision on handling of McManus's health and status - that alone is fireable.

Panthers hit a game-winning 49-yard field goal as time expires

We had an opportunity to kick a 58 yard field goal, but went for it. Turnover (4:47 left in 3Q)

All factual, question is player execution and not just coaching. Did/do GB have the players that executed in each of these games? They hold most of the responsibility IMO, not the coach/staff. Bottom line is if you are out there you need to do the job of blocking, tackling, being in the right position, holding the ball for PK/FG, kicking it through the uprights. 11 players out there, one coach on the sideline, in my book that puts most of the responsibility on the players to do their job for the amount of money they are making.

Certainly some of it falls on the players, but when the players are repeatedly failing again and again and again ultimately there has to be some accountability there. Do we just cut half the roster or do we get a new coach? This is the way it works for any industry. If the manager at your local McDonalds is continually unable to get his employees to cook a good Big Mac, even if the workers "should" be able to do it, he's not going to be managing that McDonalds for much longer. No point in having coaches in the first place if they don't bear some responsibility for what the units in their charge produce.

Ultimately the bottom line for me is that even if we don't improve (I would agree there are some systemic issues that hold back our ST units regardless of coach), I don't think we will really be able to get much WORSE either....and we will probably free up some cash in the process. And I don't think there's really much to show for Bisaccia's time as "assistant head coach" either so maybe there's room to improve there.

ST-wise the worst-case scenario for me is that we probably continue producing just about the same level of ST play lol

So can this thread be retitled to "Fire Bisaccia (or ask him to resign)?" :roflmao:
It makes you wonder though, was he asked to resign? Since he's good buddies with MLF, maybe MLF wanted to keep him but Bisaccia decided to resign because he didn't want to be a drain on LaFleur's reputation? Or maybe he actually wanted out for reasons of his own? Maybe he didn't think the Packers were giving him enough to do his job effectively?

Finally, I wonder if it might have looked better for MLF's ****** if he had gone ahead and released him himself? If Bisaccia had to take it upon himself to move on, I'm not sure that fills me with confidence in regard to MLF's leadership.
