QB Taylor Elgersma cut
Guessing Clifford is next and they will sign Elgersma to the PS

I don't think he was good at reading offenses and understanding what his role was as the plays evolved. Some players can do it, others can't. That's one of the reasons I believed that on a head-to-head basis I preferred Welch over Simmons if it came down to one of the two making the roster.
I can't even remember who it was, 3 or 4 years ago the Packers signed another "big name" LB that was drafted high. I think it was midseason and he got playing time, but fizzled out. Same issue as Simmons, he had physical gifts, just couldn't figure out how to use them in the NFL.
Let's face it. A lot of these physically talented athletes make it in college, with big schools, because they are coddled and babied. They are also surrounded by a lot of talent and aren't playing up against NFL quality teams. Then they get to the NFL and are low on the totem pole and much of the coddling is over.
During the last two preseason games, Welch was calling the defenses on the field when he was out there. I kind of watched how he was directing traffic, and I thought it was impressive. It's all the little things that are overlooked that will sometimes stretch a guy's time with a team.If Welch wasn't also very good on teams I think Simmons gets a 53 nod...thing is Welch also shows better football intelligence in actual defensive reps.
He had significant lower body injury however and never could regain his pre-injury health. His name was Jaylon Smith and he had three awesome years for the Cowboys, in 2021 he played for DAL, GB and NYG before in 2022 actually looking somewhat solid for the Giants but did not play in 2024 and I don't believe is trying anywhere this year.
Yogi Berra said, "Baseball is 90% mental, the other half is physical." He may not have been as bright as Albert Einstein, and his statement kind of goofy, but the point was there, and I think he got it right. Being book smart and/or physically stronger than everyone else doesn't matter one bit if you don't know how to use the physical attributes and the intelligence God gave you. That's what separated Bart Starr from most QBs. Bart wasn't the most gifted athlete, but he knew what he was capable of doing and did it by outthinking the defenders on the field. He was probably the closest to the 90-10 theory of Berra that I've ever seen. Talking to the man was talking to someone who had a handle on everything around him.I can't even remember who it was, 3 or 4 years ago the Packers signed another "big name" LB that was drafted high. I also think that this is why the Packers put a lot of emphasis on their pre-draft visits. They can see the physical capabilities of a guy on film, but until you sit down with him one on one, you don't know just what that player has between the ears.
Yes, that was who I was thinking of! Thanks.
Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't his play decline right after he signed a big contract? Which to me, can also be a turning point for a player. Once he makes bank, does he thrive or dive?
He was with the Raiders this summer, but was cut yesterday.
He signed the extension in August 2019 and played awesome in 2019 and 2020...he had off season surgery on a wrist injury but also some claimed his mobility began to decline it seemed on tape end of 2020 which many feel was simply his body declining faster than normal due to his horrific college injury he suffered.
If I remember correctly, Isaiah started off relatively strong. By the time Preseason came he looked lost. He was great at chasing players down late but he was often so far out of position.Received word Isaiah Simmons is gone too....first shocker to some (not me really)
Elgersma if international exemption can be placed I am curious if it will and or can

It will be interesting to see if Welch makes it in his 2nd tour with us. I’ve seen a few lists that show both gone but is keeping 6 DL. It often came down to Sorrell locking a spot vs an injury designation.

I remember being at a game that he played in, the guy ran around like his hair was on fire, trying to make a play, but was rarely near the ball.
This article says that he can be. My only question is why wasn't he listed as their IE? His value is higher, in my opinion, than their current IE K Mark McNamee.
Now they appear to have subjected Elgersma to a waiver wire claim.
