I don't like the idea of signing a player just to play special teams, unless he is a skilled position that actually touches the ball.

Special teams should be made up of quality depth of your other positions. Depth is key to all positions on the football team. By giving up a roster spot to a special teamer specialist, you are giving up depth some place else. Kind of like keeping 3 full backs this past year. We were in trouble at receiver, running back and secondary (early and late) because of lack of depth.

Martin is good on special teams, but if he has no potential in our secondary, this is a bad move that will come back to hurt Packers like Bush did.

If we can find better talent for our secondary, adding depth, > Martin's special teams skills.

I disagree completely.

ST is a key essence of football. You need to have players that know how to play it, you need:

a Kicker
a Punter
a Kick Returner/Punt returner
a Gunner
a Blocker

You need guys that can perform well at those. They think Martin is their gunner, which means they don't think Bush is their gunner.

That, to me, is a good thing. Martin played well on ST.

Desmond Howard was a special teams specialist and won the Super Bowl MVP for us. If its the right guy it could be worth signing a "special teams player."

Green Bay Packers sign safety Derrick Martin to 2-year contract | greenbaypressgazette.com | Green Bay Press-Gazette

Not a bad signing at all. He is a great special teams player and would like to see him get some more playing time even though he completely busted in the Minnesota game. I am anxious however to get Nick Collins' response since Tom Pelissero and other Packers beat writers are suggesting that Collins may hold out of training camp in the following season.

WHEW!!! I was on the edge of my seat hoping for that signing.:happy0005:

I'm not sure what you are smoking but if you watched the games last year you could easily tell the difference between our special teams with Martin and without. ST is 1/3rd of your football team and can easily win or lose a game for you. Martin will be an integral part to our special teams being better this year, thereby giving us much better field position on offense and defense.
