Both you and @milani make good points. This a huge game if have any chance of being semi-decent this year. But at the same time, it is just another game. If the players get too amped up and start messing up because they're in their own head... well, we've seen so far how that goes.

Personally, I think Ben Johnson takes Lafleur's lunch, and we hear about it all week. I'm talking like 35-14 or something.
I realize it is important for the Bears because it is a division game. And they are competing with the Vikings who have a 2-0 division record. The Lions are 0-0 and the Pack is 0-1. Head to head and division records are crucial tiebreakers.

Honestly I thought GB was going to destroy Tampa. 0-3. Undrafted rookie QB.

Tampas top tier Dline against our week 3 Oline would’ve been ugly again. That infusion of big veteran guards week 4 probably saved the game for GB.

GB to win the superbowl was 66/1 on the betting app. I thought 20/1 to start the season was good odds. 66/1 is just silly. Shows how little respect GB has apparently:).

That’s good.

The offensive and defensive lines will settle in by mid season, and GB will be rolling again.
My plan is to wait until they go to 100/1.

My father was a Bears fan and all my relatives were as well. They thought the Packers were the doormat and then Vince showed up and they ate crow except for 1963. But really it was Unitas and the Colts and the Giants that were the ones that were the toughest opponents. The Bears played tough but they lacked a good QB for a long time.
The idea of who are tough has nothing to do with rivalries

True. But unless that opponent is competitive the rivalry becomes watered down. And it is not just us.
The Chiefs rivalry with the Raiders is not what it was back in the 60s and 70s. The Cowboys- Eagles rivalry is still strong because both teams have been competitive for decades. The Rams-49ers has remained a big rivalry.
A lot of this happens because of the ability to get to be SB competitive. The 9ers and Rams have tasted SBs. The Cowboys have been close and blown it. The Eagles have been there. The Chiefs have been there in the Reid years. The Raiders, only once since the Madden days. The Bears touched it once under Lovie but otherwise they have been AWOL since Ditka. The Packers have been there and come close under both Favre and Rodgers.
I guess you can make the case of Army-Navy even though neither has rarely cracked the top rankings in like 7 decades. Back then the game was front page for every sports page. Now it only draws attention because the president walks on the field.

We are also 4 games into the season and have how many players with season ending injuries? At that rate the second half of the season will see different faces out there. We have to play these games but we have to be realistic. We are 2-2 but if we had played the same teams as the Rams or Broncos we'd be 0-4. This is a good time for these unknowns to gain valuable experience like Pierre Strong.
I recall back in 2006 Favre told the media he did not know the names of a couple of his receivers but he threw the ball to them to make a play. And they caught it.
There’s no question we caught an early season break beating a pair of struggling teams in Jets and Bucs. As far as Atlanta or Minnesota though we’re finding out they are both good football teams. We beat the easy teams and lost to the harder teams which is par for the course.

I said this before the season and I’ll say it again. We were NOT going to start this season 4-0 or 3-1. We lost one of our better O weapons in Josh Jacobs and our best Defender in Parsons. You take away any teams Best Defender, Best RB and best OL and they’ll suffer and with rare exception. What’s being discounted is GB will like get back 1 every 2 weeks. Starting with Zeitler, then Josh, then Parsons. Most teams don’t have that injection of talent coming imo.

Yes we’ve had injuries, but all teams have injuries or retired players. Look around. Vikes just lost Donovan Jackson and Cardinals just lost Paris Johnson Jr for the season. Those guys are every bit as good as Zach BB.

4-time All Pro Lane Johnson just retired. He’s better than Zach Tom imo. These are just teams in our Conference and it’s not a complete list and it will get worse before it gets better imo.

We’ve got quite a few winnable games imo. I don’t see Miami or Detroit or Saints or Texans as some huge threat at all. That alone is 5 games on our schedule. If Green Bay keeps pressing and starts 3-3 area or even 3-4? GB can cause a trouble if our opponents underestimate us. I could easily see a crawling back to 7-7 and being a playoff spoiler as a Wildcard. and our finish schedule looks very pedestrian.

Even if GB misses playoffs. Idc less I’m not trying win draft placing I think that’s a loser approach. I’d rather finish strong and miss it at 8-9 etc and I’m totally 100% good with picking middle of the draft. We’ve also got a ton of picks this draft. We’re highly likely to get a couple good players from 11 picks

Our losses were clearly defined. But our wins were not. They were fortunate, unimpressive, and could have easily gone the other way but for one play. With that said 2-2 is better than 0-4 at this point. But now the better teams face us. More powerful offenses with weapons, better D lines, and better COACHES. We may play pretty well but the chances of winning are a lot slimmer.

While all that might be true. Which team do we face that’s better than Minnesota? We clobbered MN for 3 Qtrs with a makeshift OL.

now play that game with at home with Jacobs and Parsons back and a more cohesive OL. We scored 22 on them in just over 3qtrs on the road (technically 25 points) and we’re knocking on their doorstep to open Q4 after a 54 yard drive. With the world’s worst assembled OL in Packer history and essentially no RB. Had we just had a healthy Tucker instead of trying to get cute on a QB sneak there’s a 75% chance it’s Redzone time, 1st n 10 on the Vikings 15. A TD there would’ve been enormous it would’ve been +11 or +13 (Matt would’ve ran a 2-pt) with 12 min remaining and we’re kicking off. With Micah Parsons backed by OUR crowd

I think we underestimate what having a good RB and Pass Rusher added can do in a game like that. We’ve all been watching a bunch of backup OL and RB3 and it’s like it shell shocked us into timidity.

The next time we face Minnesota they likely have Murray for the whole game and we probably have Parsons as well. The Vikings also had to go without Jefferson for just about 2 games. They are 4-0, however, there are opponents we will face that pose just as much a force, if not more.
We have Chicago twice, Detroit twice, Minny once, Buffalo, NE, Rams, Dallas, and Houston. New Orleans and Miami are beatable. Carolina will be tough.

You Don't see the Lions, Saints or Texans as threats? I'm sorry that's just blatant homerism. The lions and Saints have some dang good offenses, while our offense has yet to score more than 22 points (which, by the way, was in the very first game of the season). And we might say, "oh well our defense is better" Is it though? We definitely didn't have a good defense against the Falcons; we also struggled to put Daniels the rookie QB away until very late. The Texans are 0-4, but have put up good fights against the Bills, Cowboys and Colts, scoring over 30 twice in that span.

Crap, even Miami I'd be weary of... they put up a hell of a fight in Minnesota.

Even if our defense is up to par (barring returning players from injuries and NO MORE FRIGGEN INJURIES)... will our offense give them time to rest?

Also, the part i bolded makes this situation much crappier in that we don't have a 1st round pick. :(

I think you missed his actual wording "huge" came before the threat comment.

Lions have looked ROUGH in so many ways - could pull it together. Saints and Miami should be wins IMO.

Any given sunday is VERY real and I get hounded for thinking winning in this league is tougher than most, but I think you read into his statement more than even @OldSchool101 meant...maybe not and he'll correct the record.

I give utmost respect to divisional games because of how goofy they can be, and the Saints look revitalized under Kellen Moore and Shough (as long as Olave stays healthy, TBF).

Honestly, I'm kind of surprised at how upbeat people are about the Packers after 4 tough weeks. I'm still semi-hopeful we can be competitive. Because, well, Matt's job probably depends on it.

Even Mike Spofford, the Packers senior Editor, has admitted even though there's been some tough injury luck, that doesn't excuse the penalties, fumbles and just lack of basic execution in assignments... As he says in his Inbox, 5th question in.

I still think you're taking folks demeanor or thoughts and applying far too much to it.

If this team doesn't turn the penalties around, it likely won't matter how good all other components get that will cost them quite a few games forward.

If this team doesn't start having competent running backs, that is a hurdle this offensive structure as is currently won't overcome....when defenses have to just not ignore the run game the scheme and calls feast....issue is right now they can all but ignore it as an afterthought.

BUT....if you watch the All22...see the calls, the scheme and then literally see that it is all but always simple execution along the OL being non-existent, massive drops by receivers or penalties cancelling everything out....it is clear as day this team is 4-0 (worst case 3-1) if maybe just one of those things doesn't exist....discipline in form of penalties started the Vikings unraveling...even with that had the line been more than dead deer on the field at the snap we might have hung on....just for one example.

The OL looked better last week and Zietler will only increase their competency level more so....so that is one part elevated some (how much we don't know just yet).

That penalty part is however to me one of the biggest things MLF has to get under control.

I'll go as far as if we get penalties undercontrol and avoid anymore BIG injuries, this team doesn't lose more than 4 more games. That is how good I think of a team they can be if they stop beating themselves.

Fair, this is probably Lafleurs biggest game of his coaching career.

To apply the namesake of the title, IF Zeitler can be a solid lineman at his age, as well as coach the others, and IF Sky Moore can give us a boost... we might be able to cook something up.

The defense? All dependent on when Parsons comes back. Our D-line is still intact and with that, Parsons and Vaness I think we can be ok.

I still go back and forth on trying to get a good read for just where we're at right now.

I certainly wouldn't say we're a GOOD team really right now. There's just not really any reasonable objective standard by which I could say that.
But I also think we are probably not as BAD as we have looked at times, either.

For instance go back to Week 1. You see two very different Packers performances. Is the first ~3 quarters or so more representative of the team's "true level," or is the 4th quarter more true to our actual identity and the early part of the game was just a fluke? The truth is somewhere in the middle. In all of our games there HAS been a lot of things that we have done right. But at the same time we have been undone and lost or made it closer than it needed to be, often due to our own mistakes.

That said, I do think there's a big difference here. If you run into a team who is just flat-out better than you and they just manhandle you, it is what it is. Sometimes you just lose to a much better team and there's not much you can do about it. But for me, I think I try to hypothetically compare "best execution," if that makes sense - that is to say, I ask myself, if my team executes to perfection and my opponent executes to perfection, how does this matchup look? Obviously, the game that is actually played on the field ultimately matters a lot more than the hypothetical one I might envision, but I guess my point is to say that it's sometimes useful to take a hard look at the ways we might beat ourselves.

And so it's like....credit where credit is due - I don't want to completely minimize our opponents but at the same time we have contributed a LOT to our own struggles this season...OR have simply struggled to deal with adversity in some situations. Again thinking back to Minnesota, I think we probably all would agree...it's not that the Vikings suddenly transformed into this dominant force and there was nothing we could do to put up any resistance. No, it was more that we just repeatedly tripped over our own feet. I still hold that this was more a game that we lost than they won, basically.
Against the Jets we won of course, but it was really ugly. But again, it's not as though the Jets simply dominated us or we were just totally outmatched. The conditions were bad, we had a ton of penalties, dealt with major injuries, Love played with a numb hand, etc. Even against Atlanta where we got ran all over, we were in a really good position until a roughing call gave them new life. It's impossible to say but IMO if that call doesn't go that way then we likely go up and it's a lot harder to commit to the ground game when you're playing catch up. Maybe we still lose but that pretty significantly changed the momentum/direction/etc. And against Tampa, they did basically nothing. We just had some untimely penalties and turnovers that made it get pretty dicey.

And I don't say any of that to be "excuses" per se. These things are all part of the game, and things like being turnover-prone, undisciplined, unable to cope with adversity, unable to "reclaim" a momentum shift, etc...those are a real part of our "team identity" right now and they have a big impact on our performances. But I guess my point is to say that many of these things are at least conceivably able to be overcome. They are largely issues of mentality or execution rather than simply being an inferior team who is outmatched talent-wise in every matchup. When you consider the truly BAD bad teams in the league, someone like the Dolphins or the Titans and the like...even IF they execute well, they are going to have a very hard time winning. At bare minimum I do not consider us to be anywhere near that category.

With all that in mind though I do think our backs are really up against it.
Things like penalties and mental errors and what seems like a general lack of mental fortitude are things that can be changed, stuff that can be ironed out...in theory. In practice unfortunately they have often been hallmarks of the LaFleur era however.

Guys like Zeitler and Becton and Tomlinson will probably be a big help for our OL but at the same time these guys were available from the street/practice squads for a reason. I suspect OL will still be a significant weak point for us throughout the season even with their help.

We have basically no ground game and a total black hole at RB. Who knows if/when Jacobs will be back (if ever) and how he will look if he does return. And it will probably be moot if our OL reinforcements don't produce the desired improvements anyways

Watson and Golden look great, but behind them we suddenly have a big hole in the WR room. We don't really have a clear WR3 right now; if anything it's Skyy Moore who was ostensibly meant to be primarily a returner and has been so-so as a WR for his career. Kraft is still appearing to get back up to speed for us.

We have major injury concerns, both with new/fresh ones as well as guys returning from long term absences

So I'm not trying to be all Pollyanna or whatnot. At the end of the day I feel like unfortunately we still have a "ceiling" on our team that is going to prohibit from climbing TOO high but I do think we are not overall as bad as we have looked for much of the early part of the season.

The reason I’m upbeat is because 55% of OUR issues are what I’d label “Self-Inflicted”. I say 55% because opponents are trying to Win too! They get some credit for creating a false start or fumble too.

Last year were were really 1 big play from putting Chicago away to bed. Go rewatch that game for 3 Qtrs their fans looked dismayed. Literally.
Sure we lost and I’ll give Chicago credit for fighting their way back into what was largely a beat down for 3.5 Quarters. Now what has changed so drastically? If we recall from last Jan-February, we did NOT have Zach or Tucker or Parsons did we?? NO we did not Yet next month we could very well have 2 of those 3 players suited up. Do you actually believe IF Parsons and Tucker played last Postseason they’d have ZERO positive impact? Thats really reaching imo (not suggesting you said that literally just arguing my “hometown positivity”

Also if you actually believe the GB OL will look identical to Weeks 1-3 across all 18 Weeks then I think it’s the antithesis of homerism. It’s actually bordering on self sabotaging our team who’s never really displayed anything to suggest we’ll remain stagnant. Listen, we both like winning but I’m just a little more realistic that not every week is supposed to go smooth like butter. Your criticism is your way of coping and my homerism is my way and I’m not sure either is necessarily wrong.

If we plug Zeitler and Josh into this Offense in 3 weeks I’m 90% we will notice at least some positive gains at minimum. Now I could go around sulking about injuries, but every team will see that. You can’t predict our future injuries any more than I can predict it. That sentiment is just unnecessary worrying is all imo.

We all agree we’re largely unstable BUT I think most would agree our needle is slightly up after coming off a Win.

Week 5
* RB, Josh Jacobs is likely to be back in 3-5 weeks area by any reasonable standard.

* WR, Savion Williams is eligible to be activated 10-11-26. High ankles can he prohibitive, but his return is likely inside of 2-4 Weeks. He’s a very viable option at Slot and looked great early in camp.

*LB Colin Oliver is eligible to be activated 10-11-26. While his status has seemed more under radar, I’d expect him to have a chance to compete inside the month of November (or earlier). He was another riser in camp before injuring. He’s also played at LB in his final year of College. Which is an area of need.

*NFL trade deadline is fast approaching. IF GB wins either of the next pair of games? At 3-3? I’d expect Brian will actively pursue a player(s) that fill voids. GB had plenty of draft capital in RD4-7 to perfect a trade for a player who is low Cap impact for the remainder of 2026 or into 2027. Not to mention their Cap is prorated also.

*RG, Kevin Zeitler will be full swing inside of 2 weeks imo. It’ll take him at most 1-2 weeks to shake some rust and he’s a clear upgrade at RG over anything we’ve seen 2+ seasons.

*GB has legit OL depth pieces with Aaron Banks and Mekhi Becton in the shadows. We really don’t even need either player in October imo.
I’d let Banks rest up for November and allow Becton to really grasp our playbook firmly. He’s a great short yardage OR goal line option also. Injecting his 7’ wingspan at 360lb+ as a 6th OL or just having him as a Veteran RT behind Belton ot RG behind Zeitler is a luxury we haven’t had. He Doesn’t need to perform at his 2024 Probowl or SB levels. He just needs to be a contingency without any dropoff.

That's actually well put, I'll give you your flowers for your explanation and breakdown.

But my rebuttal about "What has changed drastically" is that, well, the O-line got so crap so fast we had to do a complete remake of our O-line, which makes me question who's making the calls to not only start the guys that DID start weeks 1-3, but also who is making the call to either let other guys go, or not pursue anyone else.

Also, Matt's still here. For all the gnashing of teeth about the guy, if he can win this game against the Bears, I'll give him big props. But I'm holding my praise until he proves he doesn't choke away the game like he has done for our last THREE divisional games :)

He Doesn’t need to perform at 2024 Probowl or SB levels. He just needs to be a contingency without any dropoff.
Savion was activated off IR this morning, and Zeitler is listed as starting RG on the depth chart... I'm thinking he plays on Sunday.

Imo to keep us in the mix? We need 1 Win in the next 2 games. At 3-3 we’re very much a problem to the NFC. In some ways being discounted by other opponents is an advantage. They don’t get as riled up to beat us. We have no target on our back. We are the hunter not the hunted.

To be honest if he legit starts transforming the team's discipline, offensive line weeks 6 through the end and gets us looking great down the stretch and into the playoffs...I'll take that over a Bears win this week in a vacuum.
