When word broke Savion was not going to start year healthy I knew Bo for sure was a lock like at 110% instead of like being 98% sure...but also cracked door for Sturdivant as well. I'm very curious if Sturdivant had showed enough to take Bo's spot had Savion not been out...we will never know....well maybe we will when Savion returns and they release one of them possibly.
Poses an interesting hypothetical - if GB can only keep Melton or Sturdivant, who gets the nod?

I think we know Melton's ceiling, or ceilings on offense, defense, and STs. He does everything pretty well, not awe-inspiring.

Sturdivant looks great but has a sample size of one PS game. FWIW I'd keep Sturdivant. It's risky, but worth it. Opinions will vary.

IMO Melton got the nod for the reasons mentioned by others plus GB considered Sturdivant and Neyor better options as that guy with potential for the future. Numbers game. Keep 3 similar in trajectory types, or 2 plus a guy who helps now on teams? There are dozens of Sheperds on NFL practice squads.
IMO.

Fair enough Schultz. And you're probably right. I think if Gluten/MLF had to choose right now between Melton or Sturdivant, Melton wins that one. So this is a good situation. While Melton mends, Sturdivant will get more targets - not a lot - but more. That's the best way a player can prove himself worthy…… or not.

And yeah, there is nothing special about Shepard (Sheperd?). He would have to improve to be considered JAG.

He's on GB's Practice Squad awaiting his turn. ;)
Gotcha, thank you Pkr. Well I'm glad to hear he made it to the PS. He's very similar to Sturdivant, and the Packers need another big WR like Watson at the ready.

With Melton out to start the season, Sturdivant will get a few more targets. When Melton is ready to come back, it will be interesting to see what happens to Sturdivant.

WR Savion Williams is out & on IR, Melton is fine to start the season.

Was kind of funny when Savion went down and people asked who is #5 next in line for #4? And everyone looked around and couldn’t decide who was the definitive next in line. It may be melton, but some thought melton was on the bubble too. Sturdivant could be him if they’re going for similar physical traits. Or maybe GB likes Moore*. He had a good showing early in TC and seeming earned his spot right away. Maybe GB is excited to see him on the field. Could be any one of them. That’s a good thing.

It is a very good problem to have, and has a lot to do with the restructuring of the WR group in the offseason. As much as I'll miss him, there just wasn't room for Doubs and that established the #1, 2, and 3 positions with Watson, Reed, and Golden.

But yeah, who is number 4? It will be interesting to see who gets more targets, Melton or Sturdivant.

What I thought was interesting is NFL.com had a very solid grade on Sturdivant at 6.10 Draft grade (RD5-6). He also has great lineage as his Dad was a WR at Virginia Tech and his Mom is a Track Star. His Uncle (Floyd Little) was an 3-time All Pro For the Denver Broncos. Wonderful pedigree.

Some of his Top Comps?
Michael Wilson and Alec Pierce.

While Sturdivant never lived up to his projected trajectory (he kinda stagnated at UCLA) he did lead all FBS Rookie WR’s in his 1st season. Generally speaking one area of note is players who start fast in College have higher long term success rates.
*Freshman All-American All PAC-12
65-755 Yards and 7 TD’s

I’d like to get him going early. Don’t make him think too much just get him the ball some.

I said strong before but I meant Moore. I think he impressed the coaches in training camp and earned his spot early.

Mades me think he was going to be a bigger part of this offense than I originally thought. I thought he was like melton was in the past. Special teams ace who only plays wr when the starters are all hurt.

But I now get the feeling he has climbed the depth chart quietly. That agility and quickness is obvious when he gets the ball in his hands. Dude is going to be a slicer and dicer scat back type of guy.

Personally. I’d put in sturdivant. He is a undrafted rookie yes. Unproven. Might make some mistakes. But his trajectory is strong uptrend. He earned a spot over some great players, and I don’t see any reason to not find out where his immediate ceiling is. Especially if Savion Williams is going to be unavailable. Sturdivant might end up being everything we had hoped Williams would or could be. Not saying Williams won’t blossom this year when he returns. But he seems to be taking the Watson route showing flashes of greatness in between injuries, early on.

To put it simple. Spend the valuable snaps developing a higher ceiling guy in sturdivant.

You and me are thinking the same thing. By the time Williams comes back GB will know how Sturdivant is doing against NFL competition.

I wouldn’t mind a #4 WR competition come November. Light a fire under Williams. See if we can exorcise the greatness out of Williams.

Another good reason to play Sturdivant while the opportunity is there.

Honestly. I thought shepherd cemented a roster spot with that punt return. He made it look effortless. If Sturdivant beat him out, you know GB really like this young rookie WR.

I thought the concussion was the end of him being on the 53 man roster. But he bounced back and had that 100+ yd and a TD game.

Agreed. He’s got momentum. Use it, or test it.

When I was rolling through some Packer material in wait for regular season, I came across a recent press conference. Matt was speaking as to Sturdivant making the Roster. He mentioned that Sturdivant was the most improved from the first practice until this week. He also said his Teams value soared because something just clicked and he was consistently good there and how it factored in his evaluation.
I’m with you though that Shepherd obviously impressed on Teand with that effortless Return fOR TD.

I expect Sturdivant to be inactive most of the first half of the season barring injuries. I just don't see more than 5 WR active. Moore was hired for KR and the coaches just love Melton. If a 6th WR is active, what position goes light? 2QB, 3RB, 3/4TE, 3ST, 4LB, 9DB, 7/8OL, 5/6DL, 4Ed, 5/6WR.

And true to history especially with no early bye he will get his shots.

Play him until Miami gives GB a 3rd rounder for him.

Could be. It’s very probable they go that route with 5 WR stay active. In THIS matchup I’d prefer our backup be Slot/PR Sky Moore. This is in direct contrast to what ACME packing co predicts (all 6 WR active OR Moore sits) Now they follow Special Teams as a Job and I’m just a novice. Yet I’m also a proponent for not repeating last years mistakes at PR. You know I’ve been vocal about playing Russian Roulette at PR and I’m not ready to change my position.

Melton has been a Gunner and a Jammer on returns and typically gets a high snap count on Teams as a rule.

Partly because I think Flores is going to bring extra pressure into a 45-50% extra pressure rate. So we’ll need our RB’ TE and Slot Moreso than some opponents.

I will say though that part of Sturdivants success story was he was strong on Teams. Matt specifically mentioned this on why he was kept on the 53. It’s entirely possible they have him active inside the first few weeks. Especially after his 9 catch 142 yards 1 TD and a PAIR of Teams Tackles Leading Performances last 3 weeks.

Getting back to your question @Poppa San IF we kept 6 WR? we would likely have to go
2QB
3 TE
3 RB
3 Teams
5 LB’s
4 Edge
4 Safeties
5 CB’s
5 DT’s
8 OL (which you are required to have min. to get off 47 active).

.. TE goes light. (Redman just stepped off the plane 1 week ago).

Give it 3-4 weeks and see how it shapes up. There could be a few changes.

Starting the season, yes. Fine? Well.
Yeah I'm not a huge fan of Melton. That said, we pretty much know what he can do. He's not an All Pro, not even close. But he can catch and he doesn't make many mistakes. And he can play multiple positions and of course STs.

And Williams is still a (largely) unknown quantity. I think he's more talented than Melton, but what is his ceiling? Same question for Golden. Ultimately, I think both guys have good-to-great careers in GB.

I wonder if we've thought about bringing Colby Wooden back.
