I know he's had very limited action, but I like the guy. He's just got that vibe about him that just makes it feel like he's going to make something happen when he gets the ball in his hands.

my first impression of Savion was I was surprised he was playing. He missed quite a bit of time through preseason etc.
My second impression is Savion looks fast in short areas. He might run s 4.48 40-yard time, but his 10-yard 1.53 sec. (90% percentile) and 20-yard 2.54 sec (94%) speed shows up getting across the field and around the edge. He’s deceptively fast for 6’4” 222lb. He’s going to be an impact player.

Not sure this is the right place but supposedly Asante Samuels is shopping for a prove it deal in October if/when he clears MRI after neck surgery. CB depth?

I don’t see why not. It’d be a low risk signing on a prorated deal.

I’m just thinking out CB6 slides to PS with very little risk of being poached and going active Roster elsewhere. There’s still a better chance than not we have an injury at CB this season. Having 1 more Veteran makes some sense. Plus a veteran FA CB like Samuel Jr. would get to know our Defense and slowly get acquainted instead of reacting at the last second if a CB gets injured. I’m comfortable with our first 3 CB’s, I’m intrigued by seeing Melton, but I’m not convinced he’s ready this early.

Another point is that GB hasn’t even fielded their full depth.

Hobbs is just getting warmed up

4th Rounder Sorrell just got back and already looks hungry. He was a 4th rounder sure, but in a strong DL class. Imo in many seasons Sorrell gets drafted more back of Day 2. He’s very formidable.

Then there’s a forgotten Colin Oliver. The guy runs a 4.56 40-yard post injury. The guy is a physical specimen and what I call a king of the TFL.(tackled for loss) he’s very disruptive, but it’s all about the injury bug.
He’s another player that Im very intrigued because TFL in a good College (Big12) conference is highly translatable trait to the Pro game. Had he not injured early in 2024 and he just plays similar he’s another guy thats not wearing a Packer uniform because he’s a 3rd-4th round selection elsewhere. We are fortunate because we don’t need him healthy to start.

We’ve got great depth.
Sorrell, Oliver, Oladapo, Anderson, Hopper are all players who are solid support of a dynamic Defensive unit.

Former Packer Safety Darnell Savage was released by the Jaguars yesterday. I don't know the extent of Zayne Anderson's injury, but Savage is a guy I would consider picking up, if the price was right. He already is getting paid by the Jags, so I can't imagine it will cost much more than Vet Min.

I wanted to see him in Hafley's defense, I always thought Berry was part of the reason he digressed in Green Bay.

I'm not sold that Savage would be of much help. 2024 he missed over 15% of tackles & allowed 55.6% of receptions in his area.
IMHO, pass!

....you are signing Savage as a back up. Dude has insane amount of experience and starting years in the league. He is not signed as an enforcer presence safety that you are bringing in to play the run and tackle - that wasn't his strength.

So why was he just let go?
Jags (corrected Browns) are a mess and shifting to youth - quite common thing. Same reason we move on at times from players. Would Savage be worth signing at the contract rate he had with the Jags...NOPE....is he worth tossing essentially league minimum and maybe touch more only through incentives.....ABSOLUTELY.

Plus... there's a significant "intangible" factor...

When Savage was injured (for I think, like, 7 weeks), he was not sitting in the clubhouse all week, or just hanging around.... he was on the field, every day, in workout clothes, just mixing with the players and encouraging them... especially the younger players, even though they were only a year or two younger, talking with them and giving them advice on how to hang in there, what to do when they got their next snap opportunity, how to step up and make an impression next time they got that chance. He was known for being a constant presence on the sidelines, chatting, telling people things that might help them.

Just quietly talking, not coming across as some veteran *******, because he was only 2nd year I think. Just offering advice based on what he had learned in his first 2 years.

This was reported several times. And he did not even have to be there - he was getting paid the same either way. But he wanted to make his team better by helping his younger teammates be better, because it was still his team and they were still his teammates. He wanted to be their friend. He knew he wasn't going to have any impact on the field that year, but if he could help other young platyers have an impact, then that was his responsibility, and he was ready to take it on.

That's a guy that if Green Bay sees a spot and brings him back, i'm thrilled to see him return. It fits an apparent pattern for Gute - filling roster spots that may be really good players, but more importantly very good teammates. Guys who fit in to the team.

If Savage is able to do the job we need him to do, than I would be be all for it. We've given other players a second chance to prove themselves, and it has worked out well. I'm totally ready to try it again with him.

Makes no sense to me. If Savage had been playing well; I doubt he gets dropped. Why do we need experience that has not really been very good?

I think the Jags were the ones that released Savage. ;)

They are going another way with young guys.

You are aware of schemes effect guys play, also age can get to the point where a guy has simply timed out or is beginning to and no longer offers that grind of every snap type play. When Rasul Douglas was signed after being a castaway essentially panned out - he had sucked - couldn't keep a spot for PHI and then CAR...

Or Whitney Mercilus type signing - did he explode for us no, but was solid experienced depth...

Jared Veldheer another guy that was on downswing but came in for a late push in a pinch...

The why is easy - he offers NFL starting level experience and performance that is NFL caliber just as recent as last year.

Now if Zayne is going to be fine and isn't a bad injury and we feel he is a better player incase one of our mains go down - doubt we do it, but it would make sense for sure.

Savage, at the right price brings a lot of experience and some familiarity with Green Bay. Gute has been great at building depth and this to me would be a depth piece. I also think at someone pointed out, Savage might be a lot better with this new defense.
