No. 2 overall pick and Heisman Trophy-winning running back Reggie Bush not only appears headed for a holdout with the New Orleans Saints, a league source said Bush is toying with the idea of sitting out the entire season and going back in the draft in 2007 if he doesn't get his price.

"No player has ever had the kind of leverage that Reggie Bush has right now," the source said. "The Saints made it clear what they were willing to do before and now we'll see if they're going to get there."

It seems unlikely the Saints will do that in time for Bush to report to training camp with the team on Thursday in Jackson, Miss. Two sources said that talks between the Saints and agent Joel Segal have been nearly non-existent.

On Wednesday, Mike Ornstein, who is Bush's marketing agent, told the Clarion-Ledger of Jackson, Miss., that he didn't think Bush would be signed in time for camp. Ornstein is not allowed to negotiate contracts, but he is acutely aware of all of Bush's business matters.

One of the sources took that a step further, saying Segal was considering not having Bush sign at all. Segal declined to comment when contacted Friday and messages left with multiple members of the New Orleans organization weren't returned.

While it appears unlikely on face value that Bush would sit out, he appears well-positioned to do so if he really wants.

Bush supposedly has more than $5 million in the bank from multiple endorsement deals Ornstein has negotiated since Bush left the University of Southern California. That money is guaranteed regardless of whether Bush plays this season.

Next, Bush could probably sit out 2006 and still be a high pick next year.

Furthermore, Bush probably has the public sentiment running in his favor. Even though holdout players are generally unpopular, Bush has caused tremendous excitement in New Orleans.

In May, shortly after Bush was drafted, the Saints had already set a franchise record for season-ticket sales, having topped 55,000 at that time. That's extraordinary, especially considering the condition of the hurricane-ravaged city.

Moreover, team owner Tom Benson is immensely unpopular in New Orleans. Ranging from his hard-line negotiations with the city and state to constant threats that he will move the team, Benson is often treated with open scorn by Saints fans.

Bush has also worked hard to endear himself to fans in the city after it came out that he didn't want to play in New Orleans. Bush has made multiple donations to hurricane relief.

He was the #2 pick this year does he think he will be the #1 next year??

What if he isnt drafted #1? What if teams look at him and his absence of PLAYING football for a year?

Gee, the Bears know what it's like to see your first round draft pick miss all of training camp, that happened last year with Cedric Benson. So, I have a very good idea what the Saints are going threw with Reggie Bush right now.

Sitting out a year will cause problems for him on the field. You can't take that much time out from playing a real game, having real practices, and not be affected. See Mike Williams. He was fined over $400,000.00 last year by the Lions for being late for team functions and for being over weight. He was also so out of shape that practice squad players were played while he sat on the bench alot. And that was with Steve Mariucci as a coach who is probably one of the softest in the NFL.Taking a year off will certainly hurt Reggies game.

He's not going to sit out. He will sign with maybe a hold out of five to ten days.

This was posted as a rumor, obviously it 'd be stupid to hold out. Look how that worked for Mike Williams. lol

ha, that will never happen.

It has happened before.
Bo Jackson was drafted by the Bucs with the first pick in 1986 and decided to sit out rather than play for the worst team in the league. That is how he ended up a Raider.

Then again, Bush does not have a baseball career to fall back on like Jackson did.

The Saints should pay the man.
They set a record for season ticket sales and made something like a 100 million dollars off him already.
Without him they just become the "aints" once again.

I agree yooper. If there was no salary cap, his agent could use that argument. They have already made a ton off him but you still need to be able to surround him with some other talent.

Bush agrees to six-year deal with Saints
By Len Pasquarelli
ESPN.com

The New Orleans Saints and first-round draft choice Reggie Bush agreed to terms late Saturday night on a six-year contract, ESPN.com has learned.

Financial terms of the contract, which will be signed on Sunday, were not yet available. But based on discussions with NFL sources throughout Saturday, as the two sides moved closer to the accord, it appears that Bush's contract will easily exceed the one signed earlier this week by Tennessee Titans quarterback Vince Young, and will come very close to the deal for top overall pick Mario Williams.

Agent Joel Segal, who hammered out the accord over the last few days, would only confirm late Saturday that he will travel to Jackson, Miss., site of the Saints' training camp at Millsaps College, to meet with New Orleans officials there. He will be joined by Bush, who is flying in from Los Angeles.

It is doubtful that, given the travel involved and the time that it will take for all the parties to review what is expected to be a very lengthy contract document, Bush will practice on Sunday.

For a while on Saturday night, it appeared that an agreement would not come until Sunday, as the two sides approached a deal, but still had to pore over a substantial amount of complicated data. But Segal and Saints negotiator Russ Ball forged ahead and came to an agreement at about 10:30 p.m. ET.

It is not known how much impetus was provided by the contract to which Young, the third overall selection in the draft, agreed this week. Young received $25.74 million in guarantees from the Titans, slightly less than the $26.5 million in bonuses that the Houston Texans awarded Williams.

Bush was the second player chosen and had missed the first two days of training camp practices.

Before the discussions heated up on Thursday, the two sides had discussed framework and concepts, and perhaps even floated some dollar figures.

Compounding the negotiations for the Saints was the fact that Bush, who has embraced the hurricane-ravaged city of New Orleans and already made several sizeable donations to charities there, has banked $5 million-$7 million in various endorsement contracts negotiated by Mike Ornstein, his marketing agent.

That certainly alleviated the urgency for Bush to sign a contract quickly, since he already has considerable cash flow.

Bush said during the team's rookie minicamp in May that he wanted to be in camp on time and that he had instructed Segal to attempt to accomplish that goal. But only a few days later, Bush clarified his remarks, telling ESPN.com that any contract had to be a sound business decision.

Nah, not ESP. Just smarting off my mouth that's all. I really didn't see him holding out long at all though. The talk of entire season I think was jus fool-talk.
