I hope this change is dramatic enough to reinvigorate Capers. He has had a history of turning around defenses upon his arrival at a new team and then seeing them slip over time. That’s certainly happened in Green Bay, although I believe a higher-than-NFL average number of injuries has played a part, too. To the extent this is a “new start” for him, all the better. To be fair, according to McCarthy they intended on making some changes on defense last season and injuries prevented them from doing so.
It’s no secret the Packers are a draft & develop team so IMO it’s on Capers for making his schemes so complex young players have trouble contributing. Of course defenses have to be somewhat complex: Unless you have a defense filled with pro bowlers, NFL offenses can take advantage of simple schemes, repeated over and over again. But going from, according to Capers, 15 different things within one package to 5 or 6 doesn’t seem like going too far in the ‘simplistic’ direction, since there are multiple packages.
