Not sure why people are surprised here. Van Ness fits the Packers defensive philosophy so well.

I guess our philosophy is more or less that eventually there has to be a point where the investment of money and draft capital finally produces a decent defense.

Never mind that we arguably had the most costly defense in the league last year and it was trash. But maybe now it will suddenly work lol

I think the surprise is that they had him rated higher than Miles Murphy from Clemson. Van Ness was a pass rush specialist at Iowa. For a team that can't stop the run, Van Ness is going to be a project at run defense because he has little experience at the collegiate kevel. I think the pick shows more of a longer term rebuild mindset.

Like the pick, but wonder if Gute had the chance to trade down and still get him? Reminds me a bit of TJ Watt....hope he turns out as good.

Thought JSN was there and might have been the pick.

Can never have too many quality EDGE players.

I don't think. Van Ness was on some of the top 5 available lists when the Packers drafted. He was mocked to the Packers a lot. Seems right about where anticipated

I’m perfectly fine with this pick. Has some growing to do so far from a finished product yet productive and all effort all the time.

A lot like the Gary pick, there won't be a ton of instant returns. But the Packers are almost certainly not SB contenders, so no sweat.

I saw pretty much all of Van Ness' college games and saw him get burned by a fair number of RB's, but U of I's defense played A LOT of snaps. I was thinking a run stuffer (on 1st defensive pick), but I never said this was a mistake, just that it wouldn't have been my pick.

The pick makes sense, with the board I was praying trade but nope.

Very young, strong, can be outside and reduce next play, easily our #3 edge right away.

Van Ness has a burst off the line and gets his hands under the OT shoulder pads. He doesn't show the flexilbility to bend his body around the OT. He's fast, strong, has a great burst but is stiff. He reminds me a little of Max Crosby from the Raiders if he can develop a bigger pass rush reprtoire.

I'm kind of disappointed. We usually see 75% of posters losing their ever loving minds right now.

I think generally people have been losing their minds because the picks seemed to be 15-20 spots above where a guy is anticipated to go. LVN was in this range +/- a few picks. Surprised they didn't go Jones for the O-line more than LVN.

Edit : See Campbell pick for Lions. That's the kind of thing people go nutters over...

Don't really have much of an issue with the pick, but how many resources are going to continually be allocated to the defense? Especially with a clearance rack defensive coordinator.
Very true, JB will probably be asking "would you like fries with that"? by next year.
