The game was a little too fast for Maye. A few poised reads and he could have at least moved the chains and possibly scarped up a few FGs in the first half. His receivers struggled to get open but the Seattle defense covered them long enough for the rush to get home. Vrabel should have gotten him out on the edge more. Sean McVay understands the Seattle D better than other coaches. And he has a QB that knows how to get rid of the ball and where to check it down. Outside of Diggs the Patriot receiving corps is not that good. There is no Nacua. No Adams. No Kupp.
Agreed, Vrabel could see Maye struggling early. That's when you throw in some high-percentage passes and pick up 3 or 4 first downs. I've seen this with MLF as well, where he'll rely on Jacobs, and if the run doesn't work, Love throws deep, sideline passes with a low completion percentage. Then punt.
As for the Seattle D, they don' seem to have one guy who can change things, like Parsons. Instead, they have excellent defensive play calling, and every guy is above average for the position played.
And we got a taste of what very good CB play looks like. I don't remember the hags CB who blitzed at least twice and got home once. And because the CBs are so athletic, they played press and disrupted routes at the LOS. For the Pats, Gonzalez made two, jaw-dropping PBUs'.
CB is the most important position group for Gluten to fix. There are certainly other needs, but none as big as CB.
