I wonder why Wolf chose Ray Rhodes in 1998 to replace Holmgren. Holmgren endorsed Lewis a number of times when he interviewed for HC positions.
Speculation at the time .... and you know what that is like in the Fox Valley had Lewis liking to bend his elbow too much for Wolf's taste. Sherman was known to visit the Paper Valley in Appleton frequently. Again, just the "talk" back then. I never saw him sloppy but then again I only went to the Paper Valley for the weekly live Packers TV shows.

We thought Ray would have been good because of his connection to Holmgren but we did not know that he lacked organizational skills for a bigger job. Really, had it not been for the Owens Caught It play in the 1998 SF playoff, Andy Reid would not have been available to interview in Philly because we would have had another playoff game. Chances are Philly hires someone else and we hire Andy once we get knocked out.

What ground my beans about that hire was the fact that Rhodes had systematically ruined the Eagles before he was fired and ultimately hired by Green Bay. PLUS , he made it known that his wife hated Green Bay - I think we all know how THAT impacts a guy's outlook on life. In any event, 1999 was a tough year to watch.

Were there racial tensions in GB at that time? I know things weren't as open as now. Though sometimes I think in things like coaching, that maybe the pendulum has swung farther. At least, hopefully only for awhile

If he was hire material why did not the Eagles promote him? That should have been a red flag.

Not so sure. Hiring Rhodes looked like a DEO hire. So if you hire Ray you could certainly have hired Sherm. After all he was on the staff for years.

That's a hard one for me to answer because frankly, I was brought up in a house where that line of thinking wasn't allowed. Naive? Probably. I don't see the world that way... but I'm white. As a a full blown adult, I'd have to say "probably" seeing the ugly side of human nature on full display and without shame. All I knew was what I saw. Rhodes' Packers went from a deep-run playoff caliber team to an obvious .500 team with virtually the same personnel overnight. ... I was thrilled when Rhodes was cut loose.

Well...Rhodes was fired by Eagles after taking a 12 win team and in 3 years, completely missed the playoffs. Then G.B. all but immediately picked him off the scrap heap. So.e guys just aren't head coach material.

First of all, my condolences to Sherman Lewis' family. He was a great asset to the Packers for many years, and when you read about his life and career he seemed like a quality guy. I never understood why he didn't get a chance with the Packers or another team. Sometimes all it takes is a rumor to ruin a career.

Rhodes was pretty bad to get fired after one season. I seem to remember being at a home games vs the Panthers that season. We endured a woeful loss, that seemed to embody the entire season. Rhodes was a pretty good DC, but the head coach job is SO MUCH different than being a coordinator. You go from Xs and Os to politics, press conferences, and managing egos....on top of all the little things. Rhodes struggled.

Lewis seemed like he had the goods to be a great HC, but we'll never know. At this point I'll just thank him for what he did to bring the Lombardi trophy home to Green Bay.

Yes. He had an amazingly successful career including Super Bowls.

Condolences and Prayers lifted for his family. Hard to believe he was 83 yrs old. Time travels.

Was that the game in which we made Steve Beurlein look like a HOFER? The final play of the game with us leading by 4 he goes back then sees green and runs 5 yards into the end zone to win as time expires. He threw 3 TD passes like he was Dan Marino.
We recovered 4 fumbles and held Carolina to 13 yards rushing and still lost! Darren Sharper picked one in the end zone and took it to the house only to be called back for defensive holding.
This was a game that clearly says Rhodes should not be a head coach. This is a game in which the Pack wins 9 out of 10 times with even an average HC. And, oh by the way, one more win and we would have made the playoffs.

Your memory is clearly better than mine. I just remember that we sat on the Packers side of the field for some reason....and that we lost
