RAS by Position

As I noted in another thread, Gutekunst has made 19 picks as the GM of the Packers. 2 of them were specialists. Of the other 17, 15 of them had an RAS (Relative Athletic Score) of 8.00 or higher. 12 of them had a score of 9.00 or higher.

These metrics are somewhat skewed this year, as the combine schedule really hurt a lot of agility testing, and players missed pro days for the most part. So if there was going to be a year in which the Packers deviated from this pattern, it would be this one.

Nevertheless, I wanted to post the players by position that scored 8.00 and up just for tracking purposes and to potentially narrow down the possibilities.

Seems to me the RAS plays a bigger role in the later round flyer picks for Gute. But even the early picks seemed slanted to athletic prowess over skills/production.

We only have two drafted of Gutekunst, so it's hard to be dogmatic about anything.

But last year it went:

So I'm not sure there's too much evidence that it's more of a late round think. Both major exceptions have actually come in the middle rounds.

And just for the record, I am not posting this because I'm an advocate for only taking huge RAS players.

I do think it's smart to have standards and stay away from bad athletes. You just increase your odds of success that way.

But I don't necessarily think it's smart to just draft athleticism for its own sake. Nor do I think the Packers necessarily just do that.

I post this stuff because it's predictive towards what the Packers might do, not because it's what I think must absolutely happen.

We don't know what formula they use to grade a player, but I think it is safe to say that Gute places a higher weight on athleticism than most teams or than TT.

That is true. The high RAS scores at the top could be more often incidental as that's where a lot of the elite athletes will end up.

And frankly, the hit hate after round three is so low that teams might as well just take big swings at great athletes. Why not?

Quite an athletic dude from Marshall I've had on my radar but often overlooked to elsewhere due to his size. I'm not a fan of Corners under 6 foot...let alone under 5'9'' as he is. However, folks will like what they see when they watch his tape...if you can find some.

I'll be honest some have asked why I've incorporated or proclaimed my liking for some later round guys like Charlie Taumoepeau TE/HB, Reggie Robinson CB, DJ Wonnum EDGE, Trevis Gipson EDGE, John Simpson iOL, Tanner Muse S, Mychal Walker ILB, Terrence Steele OT, Jon Runyan OT, Jack Driscoll OT, Joe Reed WR

RAS is one direction I head especially for deciding between guys later on. While it, like anything, isn't perfect I do tend to believe it is an indicator of what the body is capable for a dude in a raw sense. Main reason why I've projected being fine if we grab Peart in the 2nd while most say that is too soon.

A person who is uber athletic and has accomplished little is a concern. Chances are there is something wrong. At least to some degree:

• Lazy
• Stupid
• Afraid to get hit
• Afraid to hit
• Wimpy

Unless it can be explained by:

• person is a late bloomer
• received poor coaching
• Playing at Eastern Alabama Poly Tech Div 8
• lack of other talent around gets triple teamed every play
