Thompson could be waiting for the Bears to act on Martellus Bennett. Seems a given at this point he will be traded or cut.

Not sure if Thompson would be interested in Bennett given that he seems to be a crappy teammate. ..but it's a possible explanation for why they didn't land Jared Cook.

Just from the things I have read about Bennett, I would prefer seeing Cook on the team. With either player, it all comes down to what TT is looking to spend and what his true assessment of each player is, as well as that of Richard Rodgers and the draft.

What does it mean that we "might have" been interested in Chandler Jones? Does this mean TT/MM see the OLB position as being in "more need" than ILB? Or was this just TT trying to trade for a really good player?

It makes you wonder.......

Because what we want as fans, and what the front office wants, are two different things 9 times out of 10.

I read that we actually made an offer to them. I'm sure they're looking towards the future. Perry is on a 1 year deal, Peppers entering the final year of his deal. Those 2 would have cleared up about $13M or so, and Jones was about to get paid. I think it adds up. Now, how serious Ted was is another story but reading he did make an offer leads you to believe he was at least fairly serious.

McCarthy can't handle big personalities, so Bennett was probably never a possibility.

Which big personalities couldn't he handle on the Packer team? Just curious, not really questioning if he can or can't, I just don't remember a player he had a hard time with. IMO, the bigger the individual personality, like Bennetts, the more destructive it could potentially be in a team sport, but that's just me.

That's probably an unfair statement, as TT just doesn't bring in high maintenance guys.

As a fan it is getting extremely hard to watch teams improve using all methods available to them and watching our GM stay a one trick poney. I am not one to think you can go out and spend Willey nilly on free agents ,but it's OK to get some help from time to time, M y God Thompson refuses to sign a free agent unless he has been waved by other team so as not to upset his comp picks the next year . Sometimes that can work but when you have more holes then you do plugs you need to change your thinking a little.

Chandler Jones is a free agent after this year (I believe) and some team will
probably offer him a huge contract. The Cardinals may only have him for one
year and gave up a 2nd rounder and guard Johnathan Cooper.

true but at the price they paid I would think that if they can not resign him they will tag him .

That was kind of my point. How can you make the statement you made below? Do we know that MM couldn't handle big personality guys? Again, I and maybe you (?) feel the same, they potentially can become a negative distraction to a team. But that doesn't necessarily mean MM couldn't handle one.

McCarthy can't handle big personalities, so Bennett was probably never a possibility.

There is no way of knowing if the lack of FA acquisitions is derivative of the TT team building philosophy or because he wants more comp picks. I am sure it is part of the formula, as it should be. It is important to examine the ramifications of a FA pick. The decision is sign marginal player who upgrades an area of weakness and be okay in the short term. Or gamble on a player in the draft who has more upside and is better for the team in the long run.

My take in both perceived areas of weakness, ILB and TE is not as fire as most think. ILB has two young and aggressive players who will both improve. TE should see improvement from R Rodgers and if Aaron plays better, that will help them as well.

It isn't true that a draft pick automatically presents more upside than a free agent though. I get that signing veteran players is more expensive than paying a rookie but mostly those guys have proven they're capable of competing at a high level in the NFL.

I expect Ryan to improve over his rookie season but unfortunately think Barrington and Rodgers have reached their ceiling.

Dansby would be pretty neat. Not because I think he's really good (I have no idea how he's played the last few years), but because a LB corps with Peppers and Matthews and Dansby... that's a bunch of OGs right there. Any one of them speaks up in the locker room and everyone is gonna shut the hell up and listen. I just like the thought of it lol.

PFF ranked Dansby as the sixth best coverage inside linebacker (in front of Trevathan) but struggled mightily defending the run.

We should also mention that Cook translated 75 targets into 39 catches for 481 yards. His yards per reception were much higher than Richard Rodger's but his yards per target were only slightly higher (6.5 vs 6.0) because his hands are about as reliable as Sam Shields. A receiving TE is only any good if he can do the receiving part on a consistent basis.

Well, we should also mention that Cook had Nick Foles and Case Keenum throwing him the ball last season.

Thought this collection of Ram's forum quotes regarding Jared Cook was quite entertaining...

- "A TE should be a QBs BFF. Cook is like the friend who pretends to be your BFF while secretly boning your GF. Time for him to go. You need reliability at the TE. It's not in Cooks DNA." - Athos
- "Jared Cook is where third down passes go to die." - Merlin
- "Cook was much better after midseason, but only compared to himself, not to good TEs. His drops could be viewed as a single reason the Rams missed the playoffs. So many drives killed." - RamzFanz
- "He's soft IMO. Can anyone remember him ever doing any dirty work in the middle of the field??" - Ramfan46

Maybe TT's just saving THIS forum from pages and pages of complaints?

There´s no denying Cook´s total numbers aren´t impressive but you have to consider the lack of talented quarterbacks he has played with during his career. He would add much needed athleticism (12.8 yards per reception during his career) to the position though and might be able to help stretch a defense.

Sounds similar to negative comments made on this forum concerning....Richard Rodgers, Davante Adams, Jeff Janis, Eddie Lacy, Aaron Rodgers.......fill in name here.

I'd be hard pressed to take the advice of a bunch of fans, we are hard to please after all, but rely more on the experts. Of course even the experts opinions don't always meld.
