As far as the cap, isn't it a matter of when retirement papers are signed as opposed to when retirement is announced publicly?

I'm quite sure Brady will file his retirement papers at some point this offseason.

There is always that option but how many teams really go after it? Maybe for 16 million the bad press is worth it.

Thats stuff the Lions do...you dont wanna be the lions, its bush league

There is, however incentive to going after the bonus. If you recover some bonus, you lessen the cap hit.

Bush league or not, cap space is cap space.

I'm quite sure the Bucs and Brady agreed that the Bucs will receive $16 million of his signing bonus in return if he retires after the 2021 season. Therefore I don't expect it to result in any bad press or should be considered bush league.

Ha. You make it sound like the Cap mandates are fictional. This just showed me how our if touch with reality you are regarding the financial aspects of “doubling down”. We did that last year and it went south. Doubling down in back to back seasons is Quadrupling down.

Maybe maybe not. Some teams go after it some don't. 16 million is a lot to recoup but I read that if they do he doesn't actually have to pay it all back at once but over the 4 years. If that's the case its only 4 million a year in cap relief they get rather than 16 million in 2022. Not sure how true that is.

Many of you support the concept of kicking the fiscal can harder down the road than we already did this past season. This could be motivated by the desire to keep Aaron around, Davante or perhaps both. That's fine, however let's put forth some actual numbers beside what this "kicking of the can" down the road truly means. All the $50+M we moved around last year to make things "work" resulting in a failed playoff run have us presently paying numerous players well beyond their now expired contracts for years they won't even wear the uniform.

As I type this 2026 is the first year where we will not have a salary cap hit for players that don't even play for us....so there is your sliver of good news when speaking money.

Other tidbits that are good news is that the cap will continue to rise and grow with each year - however keep in mind that is league wide so while yes that helps us handle our issues it also further expands other teams options as well so relatively speaking it doesn't change us vs the rest of the league. Also we have some just ballooning contracts and massive dead money voided (Rodgers especially) set to come off over the next couple seasons which is good.

However, kicking the can down the road would mean more of the type of things which have us paying the following despite them not even on the team anymore or beyond when they will be...and this is NOT all of them just a few to paint the picture for you.

Kevin King - Green Bay will be taking cap hits for King in 2022 ($3M), 2023 ($750K), 2024 ($750,000), 2025 ($750,000)
Dean Lowry - Presently signed through end of 2022 season, BUT Green Bay will be taking cap hits on Lowry in 2023 ($1,866,000), 2024 and 2025 at $622,000
Billy Turner - Presently signed through 2022, but will take cap hits in 2023 of $1,742,500 and in 2024 of $890,000
Randall Cobb - Signed for the 2022 year, and even if we cut Green Bay will still take a cap hit in 2023 of $1,391,666

So you want to keep Rodgers, tag Adams - awesome...know that for such a fiscal move more of this type of stuff is going to occur...and you have zero right to complain when 2026 rolls around and we are still paying millions for players that have long since retired and are twenty pounds heavier on a beach somewhere.
The whole salary cap thing needs to be fixed so no kicking of any cans take place in the first place.

That said All teams deal with this and most are kicking cans down the roads they travel.

One of the things I like to see is to cap how much players can make per position played. No player should be making more then 10mil/year. ANo matter how great they are.

It's great that you are an exceptional player and helping your team win but you are also hurting your teams chances but sucking up so much money that is hurting the team just as much as it's helping.

I know the arguments.
Free market, capitalism, short player longevity and career ending injury that can accurately at any time and so on.

What about us the fans?
Without us there is no football.
Ther are no millions of dollars per year contracts.
There are no massive indolent deals.

So how is it that without us the fans non of this exists and yet we are clearly the last the players, the league the owners give a darn about? Short of fleecing our pockets as much as they can ofcourse.

Most people work a lifetime to make less then 2 million dollars in gross earnings. Why then this players can't play for a max capped salary per position then ?.

I have a lot more to say about it and expand on ot however to keep it within reason I leave it here.

Feel free to share your views and expand upon it.

The NFL makes billions of dollars. If they players were only allowed to make $10 million a year all the extra revenue would just go to the owners. They would be even more rich than they already are. The players making millions upon millions was a gradual thing and a result of negotiations because the owners were making so much money. They saw the revenue and wanted a bigger piece of the pie. I would say that is fair. The wealth is more spread around. Yes, the money the NFL generates is obscene. However, it is just a result of how popular it is. This is not going to change.

I said "double up" as in the packers total of superbowl wins with Rodgers

And no sir i am not out of touch with the reality of the salary cap. I am actually very much so in tune with the reality of the salary cap. And that reality is it can be worked out if the team/owner really wants it to

Just watch what happens...and then you can make a new post...explaining how it was you who in fact did not understand

Us fans have had plenty of options to watch football that doesn't involve millionaire players but we don't tune in partly because the level of play sucks. We've got another chance coming up and I'll bet you dollars to donuts it fails again. You want to watch football that doesn't rely on millionaires? Watch the USFL.

I'd say watch college ball but in some ways I think that's even more screwed up than the NFL.

Then their should be a cap on parts of the revenue. If a team charges above a set pricing the overage funnels to the State in which the Stadium is built to be used to reduce taxes etc..
It’s fine to make a nice profit, but many owners are charging excessive profit margins and gorging the general public. There should be profit ceilings. Such as a 20 Oz. beer should be $.99 :)

IMHO the NFL won't place more restrictions on cap shenanigans, as the current set-up allows players to make the most money. If the GM's/owners are "OK" kicking the can into future years the NFL shouldn't need to protect them from their own folly. This practice almost guaranties that a top team will eventually implode, allowing other teams to surpass them and creating "balance" or parity within a division or conference (eventually).

I, personally, don't like the idea of void years or trading future years' draft picks (more than 1 year out) as it allows short-term loading-up by teams but creates "dark years" for that team. IF a team desperately wants to significantly jump up in the draft they would need to package current & next year picks (only 1 year out) AND current players. This would limit years (decades) of non-competitiveness by dumb GM's trashing a team's future only to be fired later that year or the next.

Woof! I can't get behind that at all. Sure would be nice to get $.99 beer, but I'm going to stick to talking football and not socialism.

So watch your favorite team on TV like I did growing up. No jerseys or coffee cups or trips to Lambeau. My first 30 years I think I and my family spent on my behalf a sum total of $0.
Y watching it on TV you are helping them get ratings which translate in to huge TV contracts for the league.

This has to be a joke right? Why someone would choose watching it on TV rather than going to the game in person?

I can think of HUNDREDS of reasons...

You need to read what he was responding to…. And what that post was referencing. You dropped the point and went somewhere else entirely.

Going to the games, watching on TV, streaming, all of these provide support. Do what I do, drop in unexpectedly on friends who will be watching the game anyway.

I thought drinking beer in larger groups was socialism? That’s what I learned in College from my friend nicknamed “Turtle”. Talk about kicking the fiscal beer can.
Oh Gosh I think I was lied to again.

Lighten up Krabs you’re too serious! :roflmao:

Huge ratings don't cost me a dime directly. I am not in their advertisers target market. I buy very few of the products advertised.

Yeah but then we get a halftime show like we just got. Millenials!Millennial!! Pah... I say... double pah!!

Hey! Stop it.

I was the one in a hooded gray sweat shirt near the stage with my Friends. Not sure why they made me paint my hair gray and act all serious as a heartattack.
What do ya want Mr…… Bruno Mars?!
