Lamarr Houston and to some extent Willie Young will improve their run defense though. But nevertheless I´m not worried that they will take over the NFC North as long as Rodgers stays healthy next season. The only team I really think could challenge the Packers at the top of the division are the Lions (if Caldwell is able to get their act together for a full season).

I think the division as a whole has improved this offseason especially if Minny can figure out QB.

That´s being said every single offseason. But as there is no dominant defense in the division the team with a great QB mostly wins it. The Lions though have had a lot of talent for quite some time, but with Schwartz being the head coach they were a undisciplined bunch that only showed up when they wanted to (Thanksgiving game vs. the Packers, for example).

I still think a lot of us will miss Schwartz. ;)

Allen had 11.5 sacks last year in Minn., without any other real pass rush threat. I think that stat alone says he is a worthwhile addition to a defense. He has not lost much motor and should help them out. He is an upgrade to the bears.

There is a reason Allen had that many sacks. He solely focused on rushing the passer (knowing he was a free agent) and the D-line helped out by eating up blockers to create one-on-one matchups for Allen. This helped him get sacks but made their run defense pretty bad.

Allen is still a good player, but he has gotten one-dimensional in his 30s and isn't the disruptive force that he was when he went to Minnesota. I have no doubt that he will sack Rodgers this season, but we'll still win the game.

I think that the Bears off-season can be summed up by Cutler and a Allen: huge money deals for a mistake-prone QB and a declining pass rush specialist. That didn't solve any of their problems, it just cemented those problems into their salary cap for a few more seasons. Thank you Chicago.

You have to consider that Allen had the most pass rushing snaps of all players in the NFL last season. His pass rush productivity per snap was a little bit higher than Peppers´ last season. He´ll play exactly the same position as Peppers did with them last year, so I don´t consider the signing a huge upgrade for the Bears.

All the DL additions now for the Bears, I am afraid they are going to steal our safety in the 1st round of the draft.

I hope they take something else, maybe Mosley, and let us get Pryor in round 1, and Borland in round 2.

Stupid Bears. Always taking drastic measures because they can't beat the Packers when it matters. Yes, defense does win championships, but we have Aaron Rodgers and they have Jay Cutler. End of story.

I didn't say "huge upgrade", but he is an upgrade. His 11.5 was more than any packer player had, and more than peppers had. Granted I will take your side that he did play a lot of time on field, but who else on Minn. was there to provide additional pass rush force with any type of real productivity? He will help them, indeed.....and it also helps that he is still in the NFC north as he knows the teams well.

The Bears have rebuilt their DL and that shouldn’t be underestimated IMO. Allen replaces Peppers and Houston and Young are upgrades. But their secondary needs work and I don’t think bringing back injury-prone Peanut was a good idea. They will probably add a rookie safety or two but last season their safety play was worse than the Packers. And the more MD Jennings plays on defense the better.

They were second in scoring offense last season so after years of relying on their defense, the offense took over and they actually have a prolific NFL offense. But of course the Packers are better on offense. And now to go along with their much better QB, the Packers running game is better than the Bears’, too. If Rodgers stays healthy no question the Packers are better on offense. Both defenses have to get better but the Bears D actually has farther to go.

No love for Brian Robison? He was opposite Allen and at this point is a more complete DE which is why the vikes paid him and let Allen go. Houston and maybe Ratlif rushing inside are about the only thing that will keep defenses from focusing on Allen. I'd take Mathews, Daniels and Jones pulling guys away from Peppers over the bunch that the bear have trying to pull guys away from Allen any day of the week.

Also, the bears defense was riddled with injuries last year. It wasn't as bad as the packers as a team, but injuries hurt their D more than they hurt our D. They paid a lot of money to help with the run, so they won't be nearly as bad as last year. Still, they have an aging defense with potential injury problems and no real young saviors around the corner. I'd much rather have our defense than theirs this year and in the near future.

Well, the other DE Brian Robison had 9 sacks as well, in total they had only three sacks less than the Packers.

The likes of Trent dilfer, Eli manning and Brad Johnson have won SB . I'd say jay cutler is better than all three of those guys.

So the Bears cut one DE who still left a lot dead money on the cap, and signed another one for a lot of money.

Is Allen an upgrade over Peppers? Maybe, maybe not, but either way it looks like a good way to head towards a bad cap situation.

Plus, they already restructured Cutler's contract, which was signed THIS offseason. To me, that shows a mistake somewhere. (And we all know Cutler is not worth what he got). I could see the Bears having some cap issues under Emery.

Edit: Adding that just keeping Peppers instead would not count against getting comp picks next season.

I must have missed the part where Chicago had an all time great defense like Dilfer and Brad Johnson had. What a completely ridiculous comparison.

Having to restructure the highest paid player's contract that was signed in the same off season screams impulse shopper. That does not sound like a man with a long term business plan for success. I look forward to watching their version of cap hell in the future.

Agreed. Are the Bears better now than when the offseason started? Possibly, but certainly not significantly better. Getting only a little better while spending a lot is not sustainable.

You left off Eli manning who didn't have an all time great defense either time the Giants won ...so you're wrong, It's not a ridiculous comparison thank you very much.

Thats because Eli Manning should never be grouped in with Brad Johnson and Trent Dilfer.

Yea they are trying to win now... They can worry about the future later I guess. Besides, who's to say they will have cap issues? Are you able to read the future? The 1st thing I hear some of you mention is cap issues that a team may have in the future without any numbers or even knowing if guys play out their contracts.

Why? Eli isn't that great to me and neither were those two. Take away the giants pass rush in both those super bowls and they lose.

Brad Johnson in his SB run - 5 and 3 (TDs to INTs) with a 79.9 rating
Trent Dilfer in his SB run - 3 and 1 with a 83 rating
    Eli Manning in his 2nd run - 9 and 1 with a 103 rating
    Eli Manning in his 1st run - 6 and 1 with a 95 rating

And Aaron Rodgers is better than all four of those guys. Cutting Peppers and adding Allen is basically a lateral move, though they obviously made some other additions on the D-line. But Cutler has had better defenses in Chicago before than what he'll have this year.

The Bears are still a notch below us like they've been since 2008, until proven otherwise.
