Holy crap. This guy sounds just like John Goodman. Close your eyes and picture Walter Sobchak talking to the Dude at the bowling alley.

Do we extend an invitation to him to join the Packer forum once the Browns have lost their first 8 in a row? *waves and smiles at the Mods who would be in charge of roping him in* :D

I presume you are headed to nearest Browns forum?

I couldn't get in, evidently there was such an overload of Browns fans talking about the signing of their next Pro Bowl WR and special teamer yesterday, that the site was down. :whistling:

Gute is busy turning TT's roster over. Bye Bye Janis, Burnett, Jordy, Randall, R Rodgers, Guion and others. Basically, Gute is letting us know he thinks The roster is crap. I was a teamster on the Janis bandwagon. If he has a career revival with Tyrod Taylor as his qb then it will make McCarthy look like a buffoon.

Did we pay him that much that we need to cut him?

I have fond memories of him in Special Teams and he made a difference in patches, esp that catch vs cardinals. We should just accept that his talent cap is just ST with occasional WR appearances and leave it at that.

I wish we had retained him.

If you are talking about his work as a gunner on punt returns, a majority of the reason he didn't have as many tackles this past season was because of punter, Justin Vogel, not what you said; "returners have been running to the other side of the field to avoid him." Vogel had much better hang time, opponents returned a lower percentage of punts as well as only averaged 5.66 yds/return vs. 9.44 when Schum was punting. With better hang time, more Packer players were down there to make tackles. Janis had a total of 4 tackles, he also whiffed on a few tackles, as well as on 2 chances to recover muffed punts. Marwin Evans ended up leading the team with 8 tackles on special teams.

Hey for a 7th round pick, Janis gave the Packers some good work on special teams. But I think they decided it wasn't special enough to bring him back for a second contract.

Opponents consistently double-teaming Janis on punt returns last season might have resulted in him having fewer tackles as well.

While I don't consider the Packers letting him walk away in free agency to be a big deal by any means the team has to find an effective gunner to replace him.

Remember him ? He liked his weed and wasn't resigned although he actually played ok.

It was definitely the right decision by Thompson to release Guion before the start of last season. Remember that he was already suspended for the first four games in 2017 before facing additional punishment from the league after being arrested on a DUI charge in June.

In addition the Packers did fine without him on the defensive line.

Well, you won't have Jeff Janis to kick around anymore.
The Man , the Myth, the Legend is taking his talents to Cleveland.

Last season, Janis and Trevor Davis occupied two wide receiver positions based solely on Special Teams play. That was one too many, IMHO.

Looks like Davis won out.

I wouldn't say Davis won out, More like Janis' contract just ran out. If Davis were the 4th year player with a contract expiring, I wouldn't really expect him back at this point either. He better make huge jump in the WR position this year or he'll be in the same boat

Likely true. The Pack can perhaps afford to allot on WR slot to a Special Teams player, whether it is Davis or someone else, but not two. This is a make or break season for Davis, and he'll have to either step up his game as a WR, or return specialist, or both.

Every years brings new competition.

I suppose this might help Demitri Goodson's chances of being the last DB on the roster.

Especially when you are only carrying 6 WR's. All of a sudden injuries mount up and you are looking at special teamers to contribute as key players. Davis still has 2 years left on his Rookie deal, so if he can contribute as a return man and improve at WR, he could be around for 2 more years.

He's gone, oh I, oh I better learn how to face it. He's gone, what went wrong?

This thread puts this song in my head every time I see it. I feel I should share it all with the rest of you. It might help ease the pain to know you're not alone. I think this is the 2nd time i've used this link on this forum, must be my great taste in music.

Unforunately I don't expect Davis to contribute in a significant way as a receiver.

I suppose this might help Demitri Goodson's chances of being the last DB on the roster.

I'm not convinced about that as the Packers did a pretty good job in punt coverage without him last season as well.
