I never heard of any hand surgery, but he did have surgery on his ankle in the off-season. He used to play in pain because that ankle had bone chips in it. He always downplayed it, but who knows, maybe it was affecting him more than he let on.

I doubt his ankle surgery helped his throwing, but it could have. Maybe he feels more comfortable in the pocket, or when he has to move around, or throw off his back foot.
