The 1958 draft led by scout and personnel director Jack Vainisi is considered one of the Green Bay Packers' best. Before 1958, it was
Vainisi who helped the Packers land Bart Starr, Paul Hornung and several other stars that formed the 1960s dynasty. But the 1958 draft was a particular gem. On Dec. 2, 1957, the Packers selected linebacker Bill Currie in the first round, fullback Jim Taylor in the second, linebacker Ray Nitschke in the third, and guard Jerry Kramer in the fourth. Decades later, beat writer Bud Lea, who covered the '58 draft for the Milwaukee Sentinel, wrote: "With this great collection of talent in place, all the Packers needed was the leadership of Vince Lombardi to take them to five NFL championships and victories in the first two Super Bowls during the decade of the '60s." Unfortunately, Vainisi never saw a Lombardi championship. He died at age 33 in 1960.
