Yikes. Sounds like Josh Jacob’s is facing some pretty serious charges. 5 of them.

What’s our options if he has to be cut?
It’s a terrible scenario.
The reality is we always have to be prepared. Hopefully this is exaggerated or embellished from reality and that’s often the case. There’s 2 sides to the story and we’ve heard the worst of 1 side. That said.

An outright cut would free up $8.3Mil on our Cap in 2026 with $6.3mil sunk. That or a Post Jun cut would be more in timing as we approach end of Month and would divide that $6.3mil in equal parts across 2026-2027 or $3.15Mil sunk this year and the rest in 2027. That scenario frees up $11.42mil Cap in 2026.
GB also has pairs of draft picks from RD3-RD6 next season. So we do have significant draft and monetary capital to fish for trade. As an example.. Recently KC offered a 4th Rounder for Breece Hall, but the Jets wouldn’t entertain less than a RD3 selection. Unfortunately just this May the Jets extended Hall to a $45Mil.+ contract, so we missed an opportunity there.

If you go through the FA list, at least 4 of the top 6 or 7 RB Free Agents are coming off serious Achilles, ACL injuries or foot Injuries It’s also getting late in the year so this isn’t an ideal time to be out hunting for a starting RB.
Trading might be costly, but it’s also the cost of doing business. The ideal scenario is Marshawn redeems himself and explodes on scene.

Lastly. While this is not ideal timing to replace our RB1, there is plenty oof time for a Veteran to get acclimated. It’s not like losing a RB in Week 2 etc.

Well, you do what you can. Ryan Grant was lost for the season in the first half of the first game of 2010. What can you do? Ted Thompson did nothing. Next man up.
In 1963 Paul Hornung was suspended for the season. Lombardi had some heads up time. However, he used Tom Moore and Elijah Pitts to fill the bill. They were already on the roster the previous season. Next man up.

Now I love me some Josh. Yet let’s not pretend like his 3.9 per is irreplaceable level either.

It's kind of a sticky situation to be in but I really could see it going either way.

There's a lot to like about Jacobs as a player. On the whole he is SUPER consistent and reliable, and one thing you have to love is that he is a guy who brings a ton of fight and energy to the team. When things get tough he is one of those guys you can count on to either rally the troops or just try and put the team on his back and will them to victory. He doesn't have any "quit" in him on the field and is a great tone-setter.

But, that being said, I think you can look at last season and wonder if he is quickly approaching his "wall". I said this towards the end of last season but with running backs it's rarely a slow and/or gradual decline. For the most part they hit that cliff and one day they've got it and the next day they're finished. You can go from being an elite starting caliber RB to a backup at best type of guy in what feels like no time at all.

Now with Jacobs for instance I think a lot of us were convinced (or managed to convince ourselves) that his "down" year last season was due to inconsistent OL play. And that may be true. But he is also coming right up against a lot of the "thresholds" we see where running backs have historically started to drop off hard.

Statistically speaking, running backs tend to experience a sharp drop in rush yards over expected (regardless of career workload) after 5-7 years in the league. Jacobs is entering year 8. Running backs also almost always show a pronounced decline after 1500-2000 career carries. Jacobs has 1,840 carries. Running backs generally "peak" somewhere around age 26 and consistently drop off hard around age 29. Jacobs is 28.

I said before that I don't think Jacobs is washed up or anything but at the same time my gut says by the end of the season (if he's still here) we're probably going to realize that it's time to move on anyways. Of course, late May is certainly not an ideal time to be forced into that kind of move lol

He was beat up early with nagging injuries and clearly not himself was a major player too.

Certainly a factor but one could also argue this is not something that generally trends upward with age and "mileage". Wear and tear is cumulative and it's probably more likely that we see nagging injuries and fatigue become MORE common with age and usage rather than less common unfortunately

Oh no argument there - this expedites the aging process running backs see. I pray Lloyd can be what organization thought even if Jacobs comes back because I think with split time Jacobs can remain an absolute dynamite weapon for a few years.

Yeah. I'm on the lousy run blocking train. I sure hope that changes and that we get some real upgrade on backups or starters next year. Probably need to stay healthy this year with still a question mark on opening holes imho.

If the correct pair fall to us next years draft, I could see GB drafting 2 RB’s and 2 TE’s (if Musgrave outprices himself). I was still surprised we didn’t draft a TE or RB this year.
Generally speaking but at RB in particular, you can get a good one all the way into RD4-5. In this past Draft the supply at RB wasn’t the best. Next year we’ll likely have 7 selections between RD3,4,5 and that’s a great area to get a couple. Hopefully we hit on a Jamaal Williams or Aaron Jones type player again.

This is from the JS today:

"Jacobs was arrested May 26 by Hobart-Lawrence police and booked into the Brown County Jail. Officers from the Hobart-Lawrence Police Department were dispatched at 8:37 a.m. May 23 to a disturbance complaint that ultimately led to Jacobs' arrest, according to a news release from Chief Michael Renkas.

The department referred charges of battery, criminal damage of property, disorderly conduct, each with domestic abuse enhancers, as well as strangulation and suffocation, and intimidation of a victim, to the Brown County District Attorney's Office, Renkas said in the release.

Jacobs' attorneys – David Chesnoff, Richard Schonfeld and Clarence Duchac – said in a statement they were "extremely pleased" with the decision. "We remain confident that, once all of the evidence is gathered and evaluated, it will confirm that no charges should be brought against Josh in the future," the statement said.

The article also mentioned that the bar to arrest is lower than the bar to charge an individual. These are serious allegations, no matter how we look at them. That said , he was released. More to come on this. Just not good news for anyone involved.

I'll wait to hear Jacobs' side of the story or that of his attorneys. Regardless, it is bad news. I'm stunned right now.
Thanks @Heyjoe4. Yeah none of us liked getting this news. He’s actually one of the last people you’d expect to hear named in something like this.
Not that I expect the rest or others either to get arrested.

btw property damage could be pretty minor. Unlike my “burning down the house party” when I was 21yrs old!
I promise nobody brought flamethrowers or gasoline. Lol
The only truly bad thing that happened at my party is this drunk kid put his arm through a window and sliced her pretty good. My best buddy was a medic in desert storm and he examined him and I could tell by his facial expression it wasn’t good. He calmly says “you need to go to a hospital and get stitches now”. Lol.

My party would’ve made John Belushi blush. Remind me to tell you about the crowd chanting Turtle Turtle !! It’s a funny story. Well now it is anyway.

I was really shocked at not taking a RB. With as much as MLF likes to run, you'd think he'd want more stability there.

Can't trust Lloyd
Josh Jacobs is 28 and looked real pedestrian most of the year. Hopefully it's due to the run blocking, but I'm really not optimistic.

I will offer that a RB was pretty thin in this draft. I was just as surprised that Jadarian Price went in Day 1. There were just 5 RB’s selected across the first 4 Rounds. So it was not just Green Bay that wasn’t impressed. That’s gotta be a record low or something.

To be fair if folks thought Jacobs was pedestrian in production...Wilson was also 4.0 yards per carry as well.
Well, when you are talking about O Lines not opening holes and maybe some obvious run play calling (see 1st 3 or 4 series of 2nd half bear game); then you would expect ypr to be down.

Correct, my statement was about that, it was purely in reflection of many who have felt Jacobs was bad last year...which I don't really argue a ton, but if he was bad so was Emanuel is all.

Well flip side of Josh was running behind that Chicago OL he’d be 5+ per carry and throw in a couple TD’s. I absolutely believe that.

You look for more than the 3.9 in a player.
Execution, chemistry with the QB, and protecting the football. In Hornung's absence the Packers only had one tie and 2 losses, both to the Bears in 1963. We only lost the division by a half game. Hornung certainly could have made a difference in at least one of those defeats. Even George Halas knew that. He was a play maker who rose up in crunch times and in big games. And he was a particular nemesis in his career to the Bears.

Oh sure. I didn’t mean to imply that was a complete condemnation on Josh there. As another example he’s a solid RB in the passing game. He also is great at goal line. Really anytime he gets space his size and lower center is conducive to YAC. Like you mentioned he Seems like a leader in the Lockerroom and that’s important. I have no problem with Jacobs. That said I think someone else hit on the point that his best seasons are likely behind him. Now that doesn’t mean he’ll fall off a cliff, but more that it’s easier to replace or come close to a 1,200 yard (ALL Purpose) 3.9 average production Back than a 1,650 All purpose yards guy who’s still in his prime hitting 5.0+. Josh is leaning closer to the former. Again I’m not trying to demote the guy here, he’s still well above average.

I don’t think it’s inconceivable to find a 1,000+ yard all purpose 10+ TD’s RB via a trade.

Rarely, does a feature back remain with one team and perform at a Pro Bowl level for a decade as Hornung and Taylor both did in that era. There are good backs out there and some coming into the NFL to prove it.

It's impossible to know the quality of another person's character, especially when we only know them as players on our favorite team.

But if I had a list of five guys from the team and Jacobs name was on it for this stuff, he's probably the last one I'd pick.

But as you point out, the alleged activities sound really bad, but there are cases where they are exaggerated. We don't know anything about how serious these charges are. We'll get a better sense when and if he actually gets charged.

No one wants this kind of stuff, least of all the victim(s). I hope that for everyone's sake, there's no fire here.

From Pete Dougherty in the JS today:

"The running game is just far too important to LaFleur’s offense for the Packers to go into the season with their current running back corps if they don’t have Jacobs."

Ok, accusations of "Mr Obvious" aside, Dougherty summarizes the dilemma nicely. And I don't trust that Lloyd will overcome his soft-tissue injuries, notably hamstrings. He tore his ACL in college. He's had his running motion studied extensively. I don't remember the exact words, but one conclusion was that, in recovering from the ACL tear, his running style and gait changed, and these things are at least part of why he's had so much trouble with hamstring and groin injuries. Sadly, this all makes sense.

So Lloyd can't be counted on to produce this season. It may happen, would be a pleasant surprise if it happened - just don't count on it.

And this just makes losing Wilson all the more painful.

Gluten may have to swing a trade in the worst-case scenario where Jacobs is gone for even a part of the season. I'm wondering who you all think would make an acceptable target? Seems unlikely it's a team's #1 RB, unless there is a team looking for draft picks in a rebuild.

Thoughts? Thanks all.

If the Packers are looking at a trade versus picking up one of the available FA's, the first call they should make is to the Cardinals for Tyler Algier. James Connor is probably #1 with Love their new 1st round pick. TA may be gettable at a decent price.
