Tretter Lang Ryan talk

I think it's a good point regarding a corner who can tackle. Speed gets brought up a lot, but the Patriot corners who did such a good job on the Atlanta receivers are not fast by the standard of that position. Both ran in the 4.6's coming out, but they are great tacklers.

While it would be great to add a cornerback who can tackle the Packers first have to add one capable of staying within five yards of a receiver for at least two seconds.

I'm not saying that Ingram is a bad idea, but I do think that anyone expecting an elite pass rusher would be disappointed. He's more of a robin than a batman. He really blossomed once the Chargers brought in Bosa. He would help for sure, but you'd probably see a decline from his 2016 play.

I understand your perspective. However, we don't need Batman. I'll take a couple Robins any day. We need specialists, specifically pass rushers and tacklers in the secondary with the passion to win. My theory is that if you give a guy a big contract, give him a good narrative/mission (Super Bowl ring?) and give him confidence; he WILL want to prove himself and give his best effort. Effort. Determination. Confidence. These character traits mean a lot. Ever wonder why panelists and "gurus" stress the system? If you can find star players, that fit the character of the organization, and embolden them to achieve and compete; success will follow. The Patriots had no business winning this past Super Bowl, but the WILL to compete kept them in that game. The Falcons wanted to strike a big blow, and ended up killed by a thousand cuts!!!

The closer we get to free agency the less optimistic that our vets will be coming back. I'm guessing Lang & Perry will get offered more $$ and/or years than TT is willing to, so they may end-up elsewhere. Am I worrying too much?

I'm hoping much of the attention is going towards signing J. Cook, M. Hyde, Goode and possibly Tretter.
RFA's Schum & possibly Elliot will get qualifying offers, as will ERFA's Crockett, Thomas & Ringo.

Seems like its the normal dance that you see this time of year. While Players and their agents can't directly talk contracts with other teams yet, they want to let other teams know they may be available and in turn want to know if those teams are interested and for how much $$. Adrian Peterson is doing that with the Giants.

Meanwhile, the Packers don't want to overpay for their own FA's so they are probably letting them dangle a bit, as well as doing their own probing of other teams FA's. I doubt we will hear much until a deal is signed with a specific player. About all I have heard was from Lang and that was a few weeks ago that he hadn't heard from the Packers yet.

For a frame of reference this was for last year:

March 11, 2016 Re-signed LB Nick Perry. Signed OL Vince Kowalski.
March 8, 2016 Re-signed G Lane Taylor to a two-year contract.
March 2, 2016 Re-signed PK Mason Crosby.
February 12, 2016 Re-signed DT Letroy Guion.

This is an interesting site if you want to scroll through memory lane of past years transactions by the Packers:

Not a good sign that there isn't any talk between Lang and team! Makes me wonder if they are talking to Tretter at all? Also why id Ryan part of this thread? Tretter Lang Ryan?

Spriggs is most likely being groomed to take over Bulaga one day.. I presume

I believe we could go with Tretter over Lang as he is best suited to play inside.

But at this point, I think you give Lang a solid 3 year deal and keep the OL in tact

Perry will be resigned to 3-4 years, no doubt. He's young and big enough to be what the defense needs to play outside linebacker in the 3-4. Coming out of college I had projected he would be this kind of OLB as he was this past year. He has likely hit his ceiling, but should continue this production which is 40-50 tackles, 10 sacks, an int here or there and SOLID against the run as he has the size you look for against the run. Basically a better version of Kamerion Wimbley (I would hope).

I think a bigger question is what happens with Clay?
Do you pair him with Ryan/Martinez inside and draft another edge rusher or put him back outside where he can only get you 5-6 sacks a year???

The problemm with this dilemna is if Clay was his "former" self or circa 2009-2014 version, and PAIRED with what he have right now with Perry... it's the perfect combo of what you're looking for. But I believe Clay is on the downside

I think cutting mathews makes sense. He opens up 11 mil for next year too. Only problem is our situation at olb....

11 mil gives a lot of options though....

I mean... I agree that Clay is overpaid, especially if he can only get 5-6 sacks a year, but who else would you put there???

If we can move him inside and have him be a difference maker in the middle with either Blake or Ryan it might be worth it... but he would still be overpaid lol.

I highly doubt it, as I believe that Peppers coming back would be a better option... but maybe Mario Williams at the opposite edge rushing alongside Perry might work???

He's younger(than Peppers) and could possibly be had for cheaper... but he could be done so who knows?

Matthews did an admirable job moving inside for 1 1/2 seasons but he's hardly a difference maker lining up there. There's no denying he's overpaid and his contract should be restructured.

Especially at ILB. Paying that kind of money for a mediocre ILB is simply untenable.

T. J. Lang:

http://www.espn.com/blog/nfcnorth/p...-packers-so-t-j-lang-prepared-for-free-agency

1. As of 2/13, no contract talks
2. Hip surgery; fractured foot
3. 30 years old in September
4. Thompson paid Sitton and Lang decent money, not top money, when youth was on their sides

At the least, it appears Thompson will let Lang test the market. Or there may be little interest even at the low end of his range. History indicates a return in such cases is unlikely. Cobb is the only notable exception of a test-and-return that I can recall.

I think Ryan and Martinez have a bounce back year. Especially Ryan, during last offseason I predicted that Ryan would lead our LBs in tackles. Some of you said it's possible, duh... Others acted like it was a long shot!! Well my prediction this year for Ryan is 100+ tackles, 2 sacks, Int and ProBowl invite.

I don't know about the pro bowl invite, but the stats don't seem far fetched. He had 82 tackles in 10 starts last year.

Ryan and Martinez didn't play that bad to need to have a bounce back year in 2017. I would be fine with both improving next season.
What I meant was a better season next year for both of them. Ryan has alot of doubters but I believe he can be a future probowl player. He needs a LB that can cover next to him, hopefully Blake is that LB. Ryan showed he is capable of blitzing and very good read and tackler. People will say it over and over about how he is limited athletically. But this is the season he proves them wrong.

I have a hunch the regime would love to get Linsley and Tretter on the field at the same time. Did not Lang call out #12 for Drew Bledsoeing with the ball too much? In any case, even if Lang is retained, I hope OLine depth is moving up the priority list.

Guess we may have Hawk threads/references for as long as we've had Favre. :) I don't think anyone questions Hawk's character, reliability, football intelligence, all-around lunchpail mentality - 'beast' is not something that even comes to mind when describing him. For as long as the Packer middle has been exploited, I'd prefer someone who doesn't set tackle records beyond the first down line and can cover when required. As will always be noted, it wasn't Hawk's fault he was drafted where he was, and having Ryan perform like him would be appropriate, I'd prefer someone the other guys really have to plan for.
My God, you've been tapping my phone, Hawk was the best make a tackle after 5 yard gain LB in history.

We have a team of avg. players with a once in a generation QB carrying them. Honestly most of our D could be replaced and I don't think we would see much of a change.

I believe Ryan is more than capable to be a decent player for a long time but don't see him becoming a Pro Bowler anytime soon.

It's true Lang mentioned that it can be frustrating at times to block for Rodgers when he's holding the ball for an eternity early last season but I don't believe it to be an issue at all. I expect Tretter to leave in free agency with another team offering him starter money to line up at center. The Packers for sure need to add depth at guard and center this offseason.
