Packers hire Saints VP to replace Brandt

The Green Bay Packers have hired Russ Ball, the New Orleans Saints’ vice president of football administration, to be their vice president of football administration/player finance, the team announced this afternoon.

Ball, 48, replaces Andrew Brandt, who resigned as the Packers’ vice president of player finance and general counsel on Jan. 28. According to a statement released by the Packers, Ball’s duties will include negotiating player contracts, salary cap management and other football administration duties.

“We are excited to have Russ join our team and look forward to him being a key member of our football operation,” General Manager Ted Thompson said in the statement. “He brings great NFL experience, and we appreciate the New Orleans Saints working with us in enabling Russ to join the Green Bay Packers organization.”

Ball has 19 years of NFL experience, including the last six with the Saints. He also has worked for the Kansas City Chiefs, Minnesota Vikings and Washington Redskins.

“This is a promotion for Russ, and we’ve always taken the approach that we are supportive when our people have an opportunity to better themselves,” Saints Executive Vice President/General Manager Mickey Loomis said in a statement on the team's Web site. “Russ has been a valuable part of our organization, but it speaks well for our club and our philosophy when other NFL teams are interested in our employees. We wish Russ well in his future endeavors.”

He was a four-year letterman at center for Central Missouri State and later spent eight years as strength and conditioning coach at the University of Missouri.

He and his wife, Diana, have two children: Joe, 22, and Andrea, 9.

I remember reading McCarthy vouching for him.

At least it wasn't that guy from the Falcons. That would have upset me.

Ball's (note the apostrophe) is said to be very bright and good guy to work with, so those are positive traits that he'll need for this position.

I'm not surprised it was someone with past ties to McCarthy, hopefully he can do as good a job as Brandt did for us.

The last team that Russ Ball was with, the New Orleans Saints, where he spent 6 season with Saints who are $30M or more under the 2008 Salary cap. Russ Ball is experienced Salary Cap Manager. Russ was VP of Football administration/player finanace at New Orleans. ..Russ Ball position with the Green Bay Packers will be VP of Football Administration/player finance. He will fill the role of the chief contract negotiator of player contracts and cap-management role vacat ed when Andrew Brandt resigned as Green Bay Packer VP of player finance and general counsul on Jan. 29.

The position with the Packers is considered a promotion , because Ball will be the chief negotiator of player contracts in Green Bay.
In New Orleans, he shared those duties with Executive VP/GM Mickey Loomis, who also had a financial; background. Russ Ball has been in his postion with New Orleans since 2002.

Russ Ball was involved in salary cap management with the Vikings in 1999 &2000 and the Redskins in 2001. ( No infomation available concerning salary cap situatiuon of those two teams while Russ Ball was there.)

The New Orleans Saints selected Russ Ball to atend the NFL Managers Program at Standford University's Executive Eduaction Graduate School of Business in 2005.

Russ Burt does not have a law degree, So Jason Weid, the Packers' Corporate Counsel will assist him in some capacity. Russ Ball will work under Packer VP /GM Ted Thompson. Ted Thompson focuses on player personnel.
