Familiarity lifts McCarthy
The Green Bay Packers have hired Mike McCarthy as their new head coach.

The McCarthy file

Age: 42

Most recent job: San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator.

Coaching background: New Orleans Saints offensive coordinator, 2000-04; Green Bay Packers quarterbacks coach, 1999; Kansas City Chiefs quarterbacks coach, 1995-98; Chiefs offensive assistant, 1993-94; University of Pittsburgh receivers coach, 1992; University of Pittsburgh quarterbacks coach, 1989-91; Fort Hays State (Kan.) graduate assistant, 1987-88.

College: A tight end, McCarthy was a two-time all-conference selection at Baker University in Baldwin City, Kan., in 1985 and 1986. Captained the 1986 team, an NAIA Division II national runner-up. Earned a business administration degree. Started playing career at Salem (W.Va.) College in 1982 and played at Scottsdale (Ariz.) Community College in 1984.

High school: Attended Bishop Boyle High in Homestead, Pa., and was a tight end and linebacker. Also played baseball, basketball and golf.

Personal: Born Nov. 10, 1963, in Pittsburgh. Has one daughter, Alexandra (born Oct. 14, 1991).

Comments: Has a strong personality and appeared to have a good relationship with Brett Favre in his one season coaching the Packers’ quarterbacks. Runs a West Coast-type offense. Had mixed success with the erratic Aaron Brooks in New Orleans. Brooks had one strong season with an 88.8 passer rating in 2003, but was 80.1 points or lower in his other three full seasons as a starter under McCarthy. Favre posted a 74.7 quarterback rating (22 TD passes, 23 interceptions) in 1999 with McCarthy as his QB coach, the third-worst rating of his career.
