I did it once for Ken Griffey Jr back in the early-90s. He was at a baseball card convention in Milwaukee so I had him sign one of his Upper Deck rookie cards. Back then those were worth about $100 each, now they are all worthless and sitting in a binder on a shelf somewhere in my house. Good lesson learned. I'd stand in line just to meet someone that I really admired but so far in life, I haven't felt THAT strongly about anyone (since Ken Griffey Jr at least).
I'm very surprised they're worthless El Guapo. I mean I don't think you can retire but they gotta be worth more than $100 = or what am I missing? _I don't know what an Upper Deck rookie card is, but put "rookie card" with "Ken Griffey Jr." and it sounds like a winner.
Yeah, I stood in line for Santa Claus as a kid and then I discovered what a damn Hoax that was. No more! I only wait for the Easter Bunny!
Third time is a charm my friend!

The whole rise and collapse of the baseball card boom is a whole story in itself.

The Easter Bunny is just Santa in a rabbit suit. He's got a monopoly on all those gigs now since Trump was elected.

Before anyone goes all psycho on me I don't even know what I meant by that. I just wanted to say something to get everyone's attention.

Are you guys aware that the trading card market has exploded during the pandemic? People got back into it since they had nothing better to do. It's hotter now than it was back during the 1990s peak.

I've been looking at completed auctions on Ebay to see how much cards are going for now. My most valuable card now is a Dennis Rodman rookie card - that's going for close to $3000 nowadays. I might have paid a buck or so back in the early 90s for it.

Your card has to be in mint condition though, and it has to be graded by this company called PSA. If they rate it a "PSA 10", then you can sell it for top dollar. If they rate it a "PSA 9" (almost mint condition), then people will only be willing to pay 10-15% of what they'd pay for a PSA 10 card.

I can give you that PSA 10 rating on your Rodman card for $2,099. :whistling:

I got out when autos, numbered cards, game used and grading became hot. None of it meant anything to me. All of a sudden what they were was not as important as what they were worth.

Well said. Over the years I have collected some cards from garage sales and friends. This will probably always be my favorite card, just because I love the movie "Brian's Song". I don't really care about condition, it's what is on the card.

That's a sweet Piccolo card.

My brothers and I used to play "baseball" with all of our cards. We'd spread out all of the Brewers at their positions, and then pick another team to play against them. We would use a marble for the ball and someone's finger as the bat to simulate the ball getting hit. The fun and creative things that kids do. I still have a lot of those cards but they aren't in great shape anymore, just great memories.

As for the current market, I have no doubt that things have ticked up in price. According to the article below (which explains how grading works at all of the different grading companies), the backlog of submissions and price to have cards graded have skyrocketed. It's not even worth grading unless your card is for sure worth several hundred dollars at least.

I have been able to collect a lot of Packer cards over the years. Even have a signed Favre Packer rookie card, that my Mom got from Favre's Mom, Bonita.....they liked to go to church and gamble together. I keep that more of a memory of my Mom and if I had to prove the signature authentic, might be hard. Most of what I keep is for memories, if they become valuable, great......someday my heirs will love that!

I would think a card like that, with a great story behind it, will always have more sentimental than monetary value for you. Cool story.

Sadly, my Mom got 2 of those signed cards from Bonita Favre, one for me and one for her. A year or 2 later my Mom had her purse stolen at one of the casino's and her signed Favre card was in it!

Thanks....that is on her for leaving her purse unattended LOL.....she isn't getting my card! It is rather comical though, because my Mom did love that card and she would say "I don't trust leaving it at home, even in a locked safe. No, the safest place for it is with me at all times." :roflmao:

Agreed. They could tell that this wasn't the first purse the guy had swiped. Kept himself very well hidden from recognition on the Casino's cams. Then again, is a Casino going to want to publicize purses getting stolen, since that might be a bit hypocritical on their part. :coffee:

She should have kept it close to her heart, next to her pin money. Do women still do pin money?
not sure, I suppose I could google it, but I will bite....what is pin money? By your explanation, its money kept in their bra?

I one time had a guy pay me with "sock money". True story, he was a cab driver and kept money in his sock. That is all fine and well, if that sock was in a damn drawer. He meant the smelly, sweaty socks that he was wearing at the time!

Bingo.
A woman was to keep some money really safe (for that era) so she always was able to take a cab or make a call to get a ride home if she lost her purse. A bra was more convenient and a bit more publicly accessible than other areas of her anatomy. Typically it was pinned to the strap where it meets the cup, not actually completely inside. Not that I actually encountered any. It was in a few B&W era movies though.

Is that what all my buddies meant in High School when they said "I really scored last night with ______________"
