Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy added another member to his coaching staff on Friday when he hired Shawn Slocum as an assistant coach.
Slocum was the linebackers coach and assistant head coach at the University of Mississippi last season, but what role he will have on the Packers’ staff has yet to be determined. While Slocum’s most recent background is on defense, he might be coming to Green Bay to help special teams coordinator Mike Stock.
Slocum, the son of former Texas A&M coach R.C. Slocum, began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at the University of Pittsburgh on a staff that included McCarthy as the quarterbacks coach. The following year, Slocum returned to his alma mater, Texas A&M, and coached tight ends from 1991 to 1993 before being moved to linebackers from 1994 to 1997.
Slocum coached special teams and linebackers at Southern Cal from 1998 to 1999, and returned to A&M as the special teams coordinator from 2000 to 2002.
Slocum took a hiatus from coaching from 2003 to 2004 as the owner of a home building and commercial development company before returning to coaching at Ole Miss last year.
Mississippi coach Ed Orgeron said he wished Slocum the best in his jump to the NFL.
“Shawn did a fantastic job coaching our linebackers last season,â€
