Reggie White, a winner then and now

Did you know Honey-Nut Cheerios was Reggie White’s favorite snack when he was young? Or that he came by his size naturally, with no growth hormones or steroids?Did you also know Reggie White weighed 1,290 pounds? It’s true, all of it. We’re talking about Reggie White, a steer raised by Ryan Anttila, 10, of Mass City, Mich., a small town in the western Upper Peninsula. Ryan bought the 3-month-old calf in September 2005, right after his first trip to a Packers game, on Reggie White Day. He used money he’d earned from picking apples and selling them to deer hunters in the fall.

“Ryan was so inspired by his Packer experience that he named his calf Reggie White, after the great legend,” according to Ryan’s mom, Carrie. Reggie was a bottle-fed calf. That means “they don’t get too big and aren’t good for market,” Ryan’s mom said. But Ryan fed Reggie a steady diet of natural grains, and Reggie got big, just like his namesake. Ryan took Reggie on walks in the neighborhood, with the pavement wearing down Reggie’s hooves enough that they didn’t need to be manicured. They became such a familiar sight that even the local Michigan State Police officer stopped to pet Reggie. That exposure to a variety of situations helped Reggie in the show ring. He earned a blue ribbon, or first place, at last month’s Ontonagon County Fair. It was tough for Ryan to let go of his first 4-H market project, but Reggie was sold at the county 4-H youth livestock auction for $2,580. That money that will go into Ryan’s college fund, his mom said.
