I seem to recall when Woodson was signed, there was an understanding that the Packers would let him play WR here and there. Not sure what happened to that idea, I'm sure it was just something to induce him to sign. Maybe letting him return was a compromise of sorts?
The team had been loading up on receivers so the need was defense and ST. Jennings, Jones, Jordy came along. Driver and Finley were here. Nick Collins was young and needed mentoring.

Yeah, but apparently Woodson wanted to play some WR. I guess they talked him out of it.

I didn't know that rmontro, thanks.

There isn't much physically that separates a good corner from a good WR. Bo Melton will probably make the 53 becasue he can be used on O, D, and STs. That makess it possible to have one roster spot devoted to returning kickoffs and punts - Skyy Moore.

Too bad we couldn't convert a WR to a CB.

Ain't that the truth.

The CB group looks weak again this year, even with the St Juste pickup. I don't expect a lot of help from the draft. Hoping for a pleasant surprise there but not likely. Gluten can still pick up a player during cutdowns, or a cap casualty. Outside chance at a trade.

The team is talented enough everywhere else. When healthy, the roster is solid (again, except CB.)

I would at least like to see Melton play some. I don't remember ever seeing him out there.
Yeah I think you're right. I think he took some snaps at CB but not many. Need a miracle in the draft, or a waived player, or a cap casualty. Maybe a trade.

Height or Length

That’s probably the biggest difference.

Meaning a 5’9.5” WR is more likely able to survive or even thrive with the right skill set.
A 5’9.5” CB has such a severe length disadvantage to today’s WR’s

Now I say that knowing there are exceptions. Jaire was 5’10.2” and he was one heck of a Defender in his prime. Yet that’s about as short as you’d ever want to chance. He was also like a Top 3 prospect in his class. When we get past the Elite RAS or Top 20 graded players height becomes an increasing disadvantage imo. Learned it from Ted God bless his soul !

I think both WRs and CBs north of 6' with strong frames are becoming the de facto standard for those positions. JA was an exception. He was talented physically, but it was his intuition that made him great.

There will still be CBs at his height who will do well and for those reasons, but they are rare. Sooner rather than later, 6' will be the cutoff for WRs and CBs. Any player under that height will have a hard time getting on a roster. Again, there will be exceptions. I think Golden is around 5'10". He also has a big year coming up where is production will be expected to increase dramatically. And with Doubs gone, he'll get a lot more targets.

Golden's strong points are catching and speed. He will need to become a great route runner and produce YAC.

Part of that is Matt needs to design more plays in space and not on the sideline. There were several plays he stepped out with nobody between him and the Paint. To effectively use a players speed imo you have to mix in more in breakers or crossers or deep shots down the Center 2/3 of the field. Similar to what we see with Watson

Agreed. MLF for some reason favors sideline routes. He calls very few crossing routes or slants.

These were the plays Rodgers and Nelson executed so well. Nelson would turn a 7-yard slant into a 60 yd TD. With the speed of Watson and Golden, it seems like these plays would be a big part of the playbook.

Maybe now that Doubs is gone and Golden will get a lot more snaps, we'll see more of this.

Yeah I forgot about Jordy. Very similar speed guy that was used effectively in space. Great example.

Thanks OS. I recall Nelson turning more than his fair share of slants into big TDs. Would love to see Golden and Watson used that way. For some reason, MLF doesn't run a lot of plays over the middle and it seems he misses a lot of opportunities - not just for big plays, but to stay ahead of the chains.

MM had a plethora of receivers. And Rodgers used them all for specific plays in specific situations. A lot of it was being on the same page. If only we had had a defense.
The single biggest reason that Rodgers didn't get a 2nd or 3rd Lombardi was the lack of an elite (top 5) D.

2 that standout: 2011 at Carolina deep in Packer territory. He catches a short slant and turns it upfield and no one catches him.
The other in 2014 against New England. Belichick game planned to stop him but he still caught one short and diagonally raced to the pylon.

2014 Jets Home Opener. Started 0-1 and the Jets came in Lambeau and slapped us around for a Half. Felt like we were going to start 0-2 the place was silent. We line up 12 Personnel both TE inline opposite. Sent Jordy on a Go Route and the Pass was timed perfectly over the second level and a it was a Jordy foot race for like 60 yards.

Key points of the Game. That jets DT Wilkerson gets ejected. Ends up being a Packer years later.

Davante Adams Rookie season. While not inspiring I remember he looked really fluid that Game. Caught several passes for chunks and I think a couple 1st downs. Just a Solid player out of the gate.

I don't recall Adams being good right out of the gate. If I recall, he struggled catching the balls his first two years, and spent too much time arging with officials. I loved the pick, it just took him until year 3 to make a difference.

And what a difference he made. Certainly became one of the top 5 WRs in the NFL. Great player, ran great, great routes with footwork like an accomplished dancer. Fixed his problems with drops. Great, great WR.

Jordy was still the Go To guy in 2014. Then he tears his ACL in the first preseason game of 2015.
But although Adams was not a big highlight film that season he made some game changing catches in the Dez Bryant game at Lambeau in the postseason.

Every GB wr seems to have a slow start. Adams was statistically the best, in a long string of successful 2nd round wr picks. James jones being a 3rd rounder should be included.... Starting with the first, who injured his neck his 2nd year and forced to retire, his name is slipping my mind.

Anyways, be it injuries, or complicated scheme, or demanding hof QBs, or a GB system where nothing is free, everything is earned. Even for key players....

Mathew Golden being the first 1st rounder in a long time. With all that obvious potential. Still was left to clean up reps. Even after showing some real play making ability, he got hurt. And they seemed to save him for playoffs. Where we choked against the chitty bearz.

I'm personally very excited to see Golden playing against nickel and dime backs while the opposing defenses top two CBs are scrambling to cover Watson and reed. Jacob's and the TEs should be getting lots of good looks this season with that trio destroying secondaries... The crazy part is our depth behind them is sneaky good too. Fast , powerful, coming in fresh for rotation, will not give the defenses any breaks. Also allows us to stretch the field, and still give our guys some reps off for oxygen

The worst neck injury went to Sterling Sharpe. What a shame.

e league was different back then. He was basically taken out by the defenses he regularly punished.

I'm going to go look him up. I want to say morton. But I will go look. He was a star in the making.....

Edit: Terrance Murphy.

Sometimes those neck injuries occur over time like you said. Nick Collins and Jermichael Finley suffered theirs instantaneously and were done.

Paul Hornung had a number of neck injuries over about 4-5 seasons. His last one happened on the final TD of his career against the Bears in 1966. Postseason tests revealed it was extremely risky to keep playing.
