Favre really did turn the ball over a lot, particularly given that his yards-per-attempt is rather short, especially when the Packers' receivers had a ton of yards-after-catch. In short, Holmgren couldn't trust Favre to throw the ball more than 10 yards downfield, so there was a TON of **** and dunk built into the Packers' offense. And Favre was still below average in INT's against his peers.
But Favre did do a lot of great things as well. It just rubs me the wrong way that Favre absorbed nearly ALL the credit for the Packers' success for a decade and a half. All the John Madden man-crush "only Brett Favre can ........" conditioning people to believe that it was ALL Favre. There's no doubt Favre is a HOF QB, but rates with the Dan Fouts' and Jim Kelly's versus the Montana's and Brady's and Graham's of the HOF QB pool. Favre was over-hyped from that tier into being Montana wrapped in Brady wrapped in Graham wrapped in Jesus. It went to his head and it led to a bevy if ill thought out decisions. For me, Favre eroded away his goodwill even before he went to the Vikings. And he's not done a whole lot to rebuild any goodwill with me.
Favre has said that it is/was HIS legacy to do with as he wished. As far as I am concerned, his behavior the three years PRIOR to retiring, and the three years after, burned bridges. I understand that certain ceremonies and gestures are required (number retirement, ring of honor), I just wish they'd get on with it and let everything slide into the past.
I have great memories of the Packers, but I can honor that time period while not dropping to my knees over Favre. Just get all this over with.
