I’ll never forget one of the most interesting things I ever heard about Lombardi. Early in his time with the Packers he had lost several games in a row. He conferred with a couple of the Veterans and asked them their opinion on their take of how to improve? Vince was not too proud to use any information possible in order to Win.And this is how great coaches show their prowess. Motivation and focus. Lombardi encountered this with the Packers even when they were young. But he did not wait until the following week. He used halftime. And even as the team matured he understood human nature and he knew how to deal with it.
What I think that did more than anything was let the players who were leaders on his team know that he was one of them. Vince would not leave any rocks unturned in order to Win. For myself this showed a level of respect for players, but also by using their ideas, it held them accountable. Not sure if if it was planned that way but it obviously worked brilliantly.
Reminded me just a little of Holmgren’s time early on with Majkowski where they hit a low point after losing a couple games to start and then the injury, Favre enters and looks the part. They never looked back.
lesson: Gotta go through some struggles to have the persistence to want to fix it and give maximum effort. When all is good we have a tendency to slack off, it’s human nature. Some of the best NFL teams went through significant adversity but they used that to rise above. This is why it’s very dangerous to count a team out in the first half of the season. It often leaves us looking foolish, much like those who bailed on the Packers at Halftime in Pittsburgh.
